Can Minimalism Go Too Far?

In today's video, I want to share my opinion on if minimalism can go too far. Depending on how you define minimalism something else would e outside this "norm". So is there a definition, or better, which definition makes sense so that you can get the benefits of minimalism but don't feel overwhelmed or limited by minimalism?

My favorite definition of minimalism is this: “Minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of anything that distracts us from it.” ~ Joshua Becker

@@ecofriendlia Totally agree! I think that the way we respond to things are a mirror 🪞 that tells us a little bit more about ourselves as well, so if I have a strong response to something, I always ask myself, “Why do I feel this way?” I think people can learn a lot if they look deep inside to the way that they feel about videos like this. ✨❤️✨

I'm not a minimalist, but I enjoy watching certain minimalist, organizing, sustainable, and slow living channels. I've changed my view of our belongings and have donated literally truckloads full of items. I'm not a vegan or vegetarian but have changed my diet after watching many of those channels. I'm not zero waste but after reading Bea Johnson's blog and book years ago, I enjoy watching zero waste channels. I keep making changes and have slowly reduced our trash going to the landfill. I can go weeks without putting out our trash tote. I'm just an average person trying to live a little lightly on this planet and hopefully leave it in better condition for the future. I respect all youtubers who put themselves out there to encourage people to change for the better to help themselves, their communities, and the environment. I'm sorry you all have to deal with so much criticism but know that you are having an impact.

I was just telling my sister this weekend that I never watch the minimalists who act like you can't have more than 5 books/kitchen spices even if you love reading/cooking. That to me would be too stressful. I strive to be more minimalist because I love the idea of only owning stuff I either need or love (or both), but it doesn't mean I have to live a spartan lifestyle, just figure out what actually matters to me in my personal situation!

I like what you said about learning about yourself and what you value. Trying to convince others is never the way! To me, it goes too far when I'm starting to have this feeling of denying myself things all the time and being frustrated by it. For example I bought some stuff to do DIY projects in my room. Not because they needed fixing, but because I needed a change and I feel better now. Some minimalists would say it was unnecessary, but to me it wasn't. I changed the look of some furniture and bought a shelf. I love them. So it was a good decision. And I totally agree with the hair washing thing. I have long, dry, wavy hair, it would be impossible to me to skip shampoo or conditioner. I don't care what people say. I pay attention to buy cruelty-free, natural products, but I'll never not use them

Funny how some people think that being extreme minimalist is a sign of mental illness when 100 years ago majority had similar amount of stuff you have now. Having less is considered 'crazy' while being destructive, greedy, not content and grateful with what you have and constantly chasing more material possessions is considered good or being ambitious, fancy, and so on... Crazy world, huh? :)

I have got 10 bags, pairs of shoes, pullovers, t-shirts, pants, thights, summer dresses, so maybe 10 is the magic number for me. In some categories I still feel like I have a lot, but I won't declutter just to have to buy it again. I have a lot of socks for example and I am going to wait until they wear out. I've seen a minimalist on youtube declutter perfectly good socks and I don't think it's a good example.

When I first started decluttering a few years ago it was just for the reason that I couldn't stand all this stuff anymore. After a while I started to live a much more sustainable life. Then minimalism went beyond physical matters... what and who do I want to spend my time with? And recently I started living a quite frugal lifestyle. Not enough, I finished the book "essentialism" by Greg McKeown last week. I absolutely love it and I now there's still a long way to go but also I know I have to be careful not to stress me out too much. I'll split this comment to avoid that KZread thinks I'm spam...

Loved this video! I’m on my own minimalism journey and for me it’s not about a specific number, it’s more about making sure I only have what I actually use regardless of “how many” items that is. If I don’t use it, it goes. If I do use it, it stays. And that’s always evolving as my life evolves.

For me i know i get obsessive about numbers, so i would never count how many things i have. However, i take time to regularly assess the things i own, and try to be honest with myself about what is useful to me. Some things are kept for sentimental reasons, but the majority of the things i own are just that, things that serve a purpose. Of course, i also try to be mindful of when a thing becomes a burden, like a reusable thermos that just isn't being used and keeps getting shuffled from one cupboard to another.

I don't know if I have said this before but my goal with minimalism is 'a space where a kid with adhd can relax' because I think everyone deserves that. In my head that means there are not too many things on surfaces to get distracted by, everything has its place so it's simple to clean, and a limited amount of peaceful, natural colours that don't clash. I also have some tangible goals like I want to be able to put up a clothes rack in my closet, so I need to declutter it enough to remove some shelves. I will just go into it gradually and see if I can achieve that wish. I'm also doing a sort-of buy-nothing thing, where I use up what I have before I buy anything new. So I've been using the empty pages of my old notebooks for example. I don't declutter the extra pens and papers because they don't bother me. I'm also interested in the more spiritual pov to minimalism. I watched one of Joshua Becker's preaches where he talked about not seeking riches on Earth and helping others, and thought that very inspiring.

I just want to say I find your videos extremely interesting despite not being a minimalist (maybe mediumalist?) I just love you’re always nuanced and including and have a strong focus on sustainability as well. I have personally been decluttering a lot of “excess” (clothes, stationary and books I feel “meh” about) and I’m doing project pan until I hit the bottom of my stock and old dingy makeup 😂 I’ve also really incorporated having a “designated space” for stuff that can’t overflow. Like I can only have one bookshelf and if it’s getting filled to the brim I gotta declutter. But honestly the most efficient way for me to “declutter” has just been to largely cut out shopping. However I DO like to surround myself, wear and look at beautiful objects, as long as there is space and use for them. (Which is why I don’t call myself minimalist)

you're so nice and understanding and it's too bad people criticize you like that. i do think it can go too far of course but it's really up to the person and how they're doing. personally i agree with the idea of it's what makes sense for you, i do want to declutter and sort out my wardrobe, i agree on the three sets of shoes (boots, sandals, tennis shoes, just make the most sense for our weather too.), i plan to also declutter some cat stuff (my cat's fussy about toys) and declutter trinkets. I know there's religious items i plan to have because they mean something to me. while i like books most of mine will probably be digital anyways along with games movies etc. i also know that most likely the least minimalist thing I'll have is art supplies, sure i could just stick to digital but having different options adds to my life and it's something I wouldn't be happy being too strict about, i do want to get the most ecofriendly and reusable options when it's reasonable to (like when these wear down maybe) but cutting them out altogether bothers me. Sometimes there's clutter from trying to find what works for my health issues. it's tough too because i have a lot of sensitivities and idk if i can have certain things until i try them and then i have to figure out what to do if i can't keep them (usually donate when possible). for instance, a week ago i got a laptop to up my artwork (more efficient, more capable, more accessible, etc. i did research to find the best option) but i still can't use it due to my sensitivities, this happens with all kinds of things. it can feel like a waste to have to throw out foods for example but i'm kinda stuck if it turns out i can't have something (i try to stick with what i know is safe but it doesn't always work out). have you ever had something like that happen? when you bought something but it didn't work out so you had to keep trying? (btw thanks for captions!)

Im far from being a minimalist but I keep going. The longer it takes the better my decisions are. My goal for this year is to have 150 items of clothing Max and Then next year 100 I kept accumulating stuff and clothes my whole life I want less clothes, I want to combine my clothes, most of the time I cant. I dont have any basics, everything has a special pattern, cut, etc. I also know now what clothes I like, what Cuts and colours are good for me. So I am slowly decluttering my clothes and replacing clothes with sustainabe and good quality clothes. Every so often I go through all my stuff and reorganise it, Analyse and declutter.

Hmmm this topic is interesting :) When I think of it "gone to far" I immediately think of minimalist with no furniture, no bed, no permanent place to live etc and I think wow, I could never not have a bed LOL but I know some people live like that and if their happy good for them :) .. however what about what I call the "hypocrite minimalist" For example something I have noticed is, some people on social media claims to be a minimalist but every video they put up they have gone out and bought more items??? Im not sure I can take a person / creator seriously when they are bringing in 100 new clothing pcs in 1 month, 200 plants, huge amount of shoes, 3 cars, more pcs of furniture, or buying 100 books in 1 week?? but they tell the camera and the followers they are a minimalist and "don't own much" or because they don't shop "often" its ok to buy 100 items at a time ??? Some have even written books but then in their videos say something completely different then what they wrote in the book or in a blog? now do not get me wrong I do understand there is no number / qty put on how many of something you can own but then again "when" is it "gone to far"? Rooms overflowing with stuff or having nothing in a room? Its a fine line :)

The same applies to most (if not all) of the definitions. you're not too minimalist, you're not too vegan, you're not 100% zero waste... there is compromise everywhere and it's never 100%, unless you commit to one category only (which personally I don't think is the optimal solution ). Is it better to be fully vegan and buy 100 pairs of plastic shoes made cheaply under unethical conditions or own one second hand leather pair which will last one life? the more we go into the details the more complicated it gets, and at the end I hope we all do our best

Yes, this is so true! It is sometimes hard because I want to be better at more of my values, especially being sustainable is so difficult with deciding between plastic-free, organic, using a not-so-sustainable product vs throwing it away for a perfect sustainable one... But what I miss in these communities online is often that people don't realize that other people have other priorities or possibilities, because you are so right, we always have to compromise to a certain degree... ☺

Just a bit of leather fixing advice... I would remove some of the stuffing at least while sewing split back up, if no zipper I probably wouldn’t try to squeeze any back in. Also, I would oil or condition the leather and let sit a bit before trying to pull back together. It is like skin, and if it’s be out in the changing elements it has dried out and shrunk and is why it keeps splitting back open. And I feel ya on this...our dogs have dug holes in our leather couch that I bought dirt cheap second hand and is exactly the couch I’ve dreamt of for 15-20 years prior to finding. Gotta find a way to patch or make all new cushions for it. Good luck with it! And I truly enjoy these chatting videos. And LOVE the hair!

for me the definition is that owning the amount of things that you need/love/use, and that number is unique to each and every person. and that's absolutely ok, there should not be any negative compersion in any field of life. there are no common rules to minimalism, it is something you define for yourself

Personally minimalism is the way to appreciate and love every single piece I own. For instance, I would not keep that Adidas swimpants cause clearly it doesn't make you happy wearing it. And I think at the end, life is made of little things and if I can choose to get rid (responsibly) of the stuff I don't like, well, that makes life better. But again, it applies to me. I really admire who can go beyond their own happiness to reach an higher level. I am a beginner minimalist 🤭😁

I agree that everyone's life is different, so minimalism is different for everyone. My sister is a minimalist. She is an at home mom. Her wardrobe is much smaller than mine, but her kitchen gear is much more than mine. I recently removed items I was storing at my son's house. On my next day off, I will be going through it all and continue decluttering.

Now I am wondering if you actually finished the couch? Did it work or not? Really nice video! I am not a minimalist, or at least I don't think so. I am still in the decluttering phase but I feel like I am getting closer to figuring out what I like and what I don't like and I am living with less and less stuff and so far it has been great! Especially with clothing I always felt like I didn't know what I wanted to wear and now it is so much easier to choose something I know I love because I have a lot less and all the pieces that I do own I love and are easy to match with each other.

Sorry, a long comment ahead. I am not a minimalist when it comes to words, apparently ;) Also this sounds judging, to use someone's term below. Maybe it is. I remember watching a guy on YT a few years back, before more people started to share their minimalism journey, who traveled around the world with one backpack. He had like 10 items - it seemed like almost nothing - and most of it was camera gear. He was missing things many (me) would find essential: toothpaste, deodorant, a towel. A razor - he's clean-shaven. Personal hygiene items. I'm amazed he can get through life without those things. Pretty cool. Until he says that wherever he stays - with friends, at hostels, with people he finds online who accommodate travelers, etc. - he "borrows" whatever he needs. He uses other people's stuff - towels, soap, deodorant and razors - to stay a minimalist and below his set level of items. That was off-putting. And I think that takes minimalism too far. It's different if you don't have a car but a friend lets you borrow theirs for a weekend trip. Or you want to borrow someone's jacket while traveling because it was colder than you packed for and they had an extra. Items that are not daily use, personal hygiene items that no one would really want back. It made him look cheap and lazy and a bit of a sponge trying to be "minimal" by using other people's things to avoid owning additional items. To me, he came across as entitled, as if he were special because he was traveling, was a minimalist and he was owed these things just because. Okay, judgment over :)

I totally agree! And I think it is a fascinating topic! So many of the "digital nomads" owning only 20-100things need to borrow similar things to survive. I think it's on to not own a kitchen and always eat out or cook in vacation rentals, to not own a bed and sleep in Airbnb and hotels, to rent a car or bike because you always only stay in one place for a few weeks. BUT that also means that you are not REALLY so much more of a minimalist than other people with homes, furniture, etc. Because you still use all those other things. For me not owning a toothbrush and similar things would go too far. But apart from that everybody should do what is best for them but then they can't really compare themselves to other people saying that they actually can live with fewer things...

I think he should (have) bought himself a safety razor with cheap changeable blades, old-school-like. Borrowing shampoo and towel once seems fine to me, but using up someone's disposable razors does not.. x)

With time I have come to be more patient with myself when it comes to "becoming more minimalist". I have realized that it is a journey and that I need to be kind to myself to allow myself to find my way. I like what you say about change, I think all of these things really depend and contribute to what rhythm our minimalism has. If that makes sense? By the way...did you manage to fix the couch?

I was wondering if you thought that minimalism was an individualistic concept, or more of a social one? I feel like you see minimalism as something to each one's own, which is also kind of how I see it, but maybe it still needs a universal definition so that we can communicate it and share it and inspire others? Also on another note, kind of: what would you say to someone who thinks minimalism is selfish?

I just think the thread might be better because the couch is exposed to sun and rain so I am afraid the tape would look and feel bad after some time.

We use shampoo bars! I’ve been using them for about 2 years. It took about 3 months of greasy hair for me to get the hang of using them. If you have hard water they can be a little tricky. A standard size bar lasts us about 3-4 months. I wash my hair once a week and my husband washes every day. Depending on the ingredients, they may not lather like normal shampoo so I was using too much and had residue left over. We also have hard water so I added a shower filter which helped with the residue build up. (For context: I have shoulder length hair, very thick and wavy). My scalp looks/feels healthier.

You are actually still using the no-poo method because you use using a shampoo bar without sulfates and harsh ingredients (I believe, idk what's in your shampoo bar lol). I've been doing no-poo since like 2009 and at least back then it meant not using traditional shampoo with certain ingredients. I've never understood no-poo to mean only WO even though I suppose WO is the furthest form of no-poo.
