On my first ever tiling job, around 1992 in the UK, with no prior knowledge, I tiled directly onto a large concrete kitchen floor. There was a section that I previously filled with cement, as it was dipped quite badly. I didn't put anything on the concrete, just the tile adhesive and tiles. It is now 2021 and I've not had a single crack. I guess I'm just lucky :-). The bad thing about it has been that it is so slippy, due to smooth ceramic, very cold and it has a few chips from heavy items being dropped. My new floor may be done differently, just to make it warmer.

In Australia tiling directly on concrete is standard practise, and ALL concrete slabs must be reinforced with steel mesh, and a very high percentage of new homes built on flat ground are slab-on-ground

Not only in Australia, most places on Earth. If I told someone I want to tile over particle board they would look at me like I'm crazy. Might as well do it on carpet. Then again we don't make walls out of cardboard either.

You’re correct.

Here in Mexico tiling over concrete is the number one way to do a floor. Just as he says. It is important to know what concrete you are tiling on. Here for the first floor in Mexico it is usually compacted rubble with concrete poored over it with no steel mesh in it. It is very important to let it settle and see where and if cracks form over time. Usually within some months it will be stable and no further cracking or new cracking will happen if it was well compacted. For second and higher floors always a steel mesh is used (here in Mexico usually a manual woven 4 by 4 mesh of 3/8's or thicker steel rods, that does never crack and you can tile over is no issues whatsoever. Also from my experience when tiling over a new floor with porcelain tiles, if cracks do occur, it mostly the grout line that cracks, not the tile itself. Easy to fix. Regular ceramic tile might not be that strong, at lease in my experience.

That the same as we do it here in Egypt, but we add a layer of sand between the reinforced concrete floor and the ceramic tiles to level it

thanks Jeff and you are absolutly right many opinions I'm in the process of trying to find out what i can do to put tile , pavers or an overlay on my patio slab and porch slab on my 1880 frame house both over 12 inch thick omg right most of the ppl i have talked too so far say don't do tile in the northeast { this is all old school tradesman ) ill keep on educating myself

I was curious to see the answer. I bought my house in 2005 and the downstairs bathroom has tile on slab. Now I don't know who did that job or how they did it, but they did that job flawlessly. The tile is strong and still in perfect condition.

Can I install the uncoupling membrate for tile flooring after the rooms have been drywalled?

How does the use of cork or CeraZorb (synthetic cork) affect crack propagation? Is it a substitute fit the crack isolation membranes or do also need both if you want to insulate your tiles from the slab?

I have a basement floor that's been painted over. House was built in 1962 and is in southern Canada on the west coast. What do i need supply wise and layering to tile my tiny bathroom floor? I'm a newbie!

My only concern with using an uncoupling membrane over concrete in a normally dry basement, is even if any amount of water were to find its way into the dimples of the uncoupling membrane through the side or perimeter edges, it would never be able to dry out.

Home RenoVision DIY have you seen or have any experience with the real wood flooring strips that have a rubber channel on both ends that the strip snaps into? With a big suction cup with a handle you can pop any strip out of anywhere at anytime. It is real wood that can be resurfaced. Any info on it? Good, bad, ugly? Too expensive? Thanks.

How about concrete walls? I am in Florida, and I am replacing the shower tile. My walls are cinderblock (interior and exterior). There was no backer board behind the tile we tore off, and install guy says it’s not needed, but what about moisture?

Please make a video on how to build patio or deck roof . how to build a frame with metal ceiling may be. Teach us dos and don’ts of it. One can easily do a bad job which can cause thousands later to repair the damage to adjacent house or building

Ok so I have a good bit of questions for you. I am turning a garage into a master suite. The bathroom will be an L shape because it is going around an existing laundry room. I will be building up the floor for the bathroom. I’m gonna be putting in a 6ftx4ft shower. So my first question is due to the fact that I cannot put in an acrylic base because they don’t make that size can I do a concrete bottom and put multiple layers of a sealer to make it waterproof? I really don’t want to tile the shower floor and concrete was a thought for the shower floor. My plan is to use 24x24 polished white porcelain rectified tile on the shower walls, is that a good idea? Also the floor in the bathroom is going to be about 80 square foot and I planned to use a dark gray 24x24 rectified glazed tile, is that a good idea? I’m unsure of what sized tile to put on the bathroom floor. What size do you think will look the best for 80 square foot in an L shape layout bathroom? I know I want gray so the grout lines are gray so it doesn’t look crappy after it gets dirty or wet etc. My husband and I plus a few of my friends are doing the entire garage DIY. I’m a beginner however my husbands and friends are jacks of all trades. Anyways I have watched a lot of your videos and really love all of your information, it’s super helpful. I’d love to hear your ideas and feedback on what I should do with this bathroom. I’m gonna pretty much be designing it all and don’t have any experience. What should I do when my shower doesn’t have waterproof liner and is already concrete on the ground. It’s a walk in shower and it was like that since I brought he house.

I have a first floor condo in florida . We paid for 1700 sq ft of tile plank floors 3 years ago. I noticed grout falling out 2 yrs ago and didn’t think much about it but lately I noticed the tiles feel hollow as I walk on them. And more grout is failing. I called a guy to regrout but he said 90% floor was not adhered to underlying concrete and he could see between tiles that there was no membrane. He said he always uses a membrane in florida . If you tap on tiles , 90% sound “hollow” . I called another flooring company who says they always use an uncoupling membrane to prevent this situation. My builder says you don’t need a membrane. Bottom line is I have to start all over with anew floor. Everyone I have contacted down here says with climate / humidity it’s just stupid to not use a membrane because this happens all the time here in florida . Do you have an opinion?

I beg to differ. Live in Michigan and I’m a flooring contractor. Almost every apartment building I go into build even built in the early 2000s and on has a crack in it. Some are very bad as well, you can see and feel the hump.

Can I put tile over tile even if the old one is cracked already?

Jeff, for the person for the small 25 sq ft tile job.....can we just concrete poly caulk the crack area which will allow expansion/contraction and tile over that ? Ive sealed all the cracks in my basement which was already finished, but am redoing it. I wanted to radon seal everything so I poly caulked all cracks and joints. I’m using vinyl planks but have a small tile area around a bar. Preexisting tiling was not cracked and had been there for 20 or so years.

We had tile installed about 20 years ago throughout most of the house but in the living room, it's now cracking and breaking off in pieces. I don't know if it's porcelain or ceramic tile but it's only cracking in that part of the house. I had a theory that perhaps it was the tree outside that was pushing up against the foundation and cracking but I doubt the the foundation is that thin and weak. Maybe the guy who installed it did something wrong. I am going to have to have to rip off all of the tile in the living room and replace it with a similar marbled pattern. I also notice that sometimes when I walk around the kitchen or dining table, there is a slight noise that the tile makes as I step in certain spots. Obviously the tile is coming unglued but it hasn't cracked yet. What do you think is happening here? The guy who installed it passed away so I can't show him what's going on. Perhaps he didn't put enough plaster or whatever you call it underneath the tile? Or should he have applied what you're talking about before putting on the plaster?

Don't you guys have flexible tile glue available in the US? I sold tonnes of that for new slab homes, never had any issues with slab cracks showing through the tiling.

ask folks in texas who had a freeze and no uncoupling membrane. almost every house had the tile destroyed. This tech is for extreme situations to protect your investment. or on basement slabs that have no reinforcement.

@@OnRappel He's talking about the ACTUALLY TOUGH climates here in Canada that make pouring good concrete slabs, and laying good tile on top of that, ACTUALLY TOUGH. Flexibility in uncoupling membranes and adhesives are a MUST up here. Enjoy building in your moderate, nice-temperature climates, must be nice. 😂

If it's a brand new floor, membrane is a good idea. If it's a 30 year old slab or basement that has absolutely no cracks, then you're good without.

Since when is it normal to pour any slab WITHOUT reinforcement?? Pretty sure basement slabs in Canada use plenty of reinforcement.

Hey Jeff! I'm new to the membership and I'm looking at buying LVP for my new home. I've watched your video on flooring and looks like LifeProof is one of the better options. Want waterproof as it's just a better overall product. I will be renting out my home out as well. House hacking. I'm trying to weigh Costco Mohawk Home Misty Harbor Oak luxury vinyl vs LifeProof sterling oak. About 2500 sq ft for area being laid. Costco is about 2.25 a sq ft and the Lifeproof is 2.99. Is one better than the other with warranty and is the cost savings better for the Costco vs the other? Thanks a ton!

I also have a 14 x 110 ft driveway that is tile. And the complete perimeter of my home is tiled. I've never had a crack. So not sure why you can't tile a basement cement floor.

My comment has nothing to do with the video. Since C-19 has 'quarantined' so many people, I've noticed a fad or maybe an opportunity for men to grow out their beards, full beards!! Have you thought about letting your beard grow out longer? A lot of the men are shaping their beards, not letting them grow out wild, and they look really nice!! Of course they don't have to worry about getting mud, or drywall dust, or wood shavings in their beard, but still..... you would look good with a beard or even a longer mustache! But then again, I guess that would just be something else you'd have to take care of and I guess you already have enough to do.
