Can I ride this MASSIVE WAKEBOARD? Debunking Big Board Myths

There is a lot of bad information out there about board size and honestly a lot of riders could up their game by getting on a bigger board. So let’s debunk some big board myths as I ride this MASSIVE prototype wakeboard.
I received an incredible video from Jason, he is without a doubt the biggest wakeboarder on the Jordanelle Resevoir in Utah. My man is 6’6” and 365lbs! He might be in the running for the biggest wakeboarder in America! Jason is currently riding a Hyperlite State 145cm, I’m half his size and I typically ride a 139cm or 144cm. Jason’s board size is roughly the equivalent to me riding a Murray Junior board (120cm). In my humble opinion, he needs to get out there on a bigger board. But I get it, it’s hard to find the big boards, especially big boards for riding boat.
The benefits of a bigger board? With more surface area, you can generate more pop and have softer landings. Years ago, bigger boards were a challenge to design just because of their weight. But now we have the technology to make boards lighter than ever, so you can get the best of both worlds. You can have a big, fun to ride, light board.
When I create a new board with Hyperlite, I get together with Greg Nelson, we brainstorm, sketch on paper, get out the bondo, the fiberglass, resin, the clay, and even have broken out the Play-Doh! Then we go into the shaping process. Once we have a prototype, I spend days back home riding it to test it out and send feedback for the next prototype. In my shop I keep my Top Secret Classified Prototypes. Some of these prototypes went on to be production models, others are still Classified. Seeing Jason’s video gave me an idea, I have a 155cm prototype that never made it to production! Let’s take it out for a spin and see how it rides… and then I’m sending it out to Jason to try out!
Questions? Comments? Drop them below and let me know:
Are you sizing up?
Or maybe you are like Jason, in the running for America’s largest wakeboarder?

Seeing you rip that board humbled me Jason. I'm 6'4" 275lbs and I was having a difficult time getting up and staying up with my brothers 144 H/L. I was thinking I HAD to have a 150+ board, but after watching your video I'm DEF gonna keep trying. Still may end up buying a bigger board though ;)

I'm the same size and got a Slingshot Nomad 160 and I love me a big board. I'm not trying to do insane aerials so the added size and weight are meaningless to me. I'm also bigger and stronger and than most sub-200lb people. It feels so good coming from a 145 I had.

Thanks for covering this topic Shaun. This will help a TON! I’ve been pushing customers into bigger boards years. They always think I’m crazy until I explain the benefits. There’s this common belief that smaller boards are easier to maneuver and rotate. With how far board tech has come, 143-145 is the new 137-139.

Shaun, I realize this is an older video, but just wanted to personally thank you for advocating for bigger boards. After spending a lifetime struggling with smaller boards (I'm 6'3" 240lbs), I got your 150 a couple of years ago. I pop right up at the start, the riding experience is so much better for me, landings are softer, and I don't have to spend nearly as much energy in general. Proud to say that at 40 years old, I'm finally jumping wake to wake. Hoping to master some big air jumps before my body/joints force me to a lower impact summer hobby. Anyway, thanks for making wakeboarding fun for bigger humans!

Shaun, I love your videos. My kids and I just started wakeboarding last year and love it! The only board we have is a 140. I’m (a young) 44 years old 5’9” 230lbs and can get around on the small board alright. The problem is that if I don’t go at least 20 mph, the board really drags in the water and drains energy super fast! Trying to learn how to jump or learning surface 180’s for the first time is pretty scary at 20 mph. I plan to have the Murray 150 by next summer, how much do you think I’ll be able to slow the boat down with the bigger board so I don’t have to be so worried about faceplants at 20?

  • @Shaun.Murray

    @Shaun.Murray

I think you'll be able to drop 1-2 mph which can be huge. Maybe even more but the slower you go, the more you'll have to work to hang on. BUT well worth it to slow down, try some fun slow stuff, rest, and do it again.

Just throwing this out there, would a wakeboard benefit from the serrated edge like the 2012 snowboards? That wavy edge that grabs the edge better... I’m curious what that would do.

Hey Shaun! I'm currently getting into wakeboarding and rode some last weekend on a friends 143. Seemed a bit rough like I was plowing water. I am 35, 295 and 6'. Should I buy a 150? the only issue is my son is 12 and 110lb, we both have size 12 feet and was wanting to buy one board but could buy 2 if I need to. I have a Larson Senza 186 that throws a nice wake. Love your content! Learned a ton already from you.

Good question Brandon but since you're 6 foot and your son is 12 years old, and have 200 lbs between the two of you, finding something that you both can ride isn't something I would suggest. For sure you should be on the 150 Murray, and I suggest that he should be on a 134. Thanks for asking

@@nilfux I like it ok. I think I could go a little bigger though. It is the best board I have ridden to date in that size range. It’s a board like all Slingshot boards, that is very flat on the bottom so forget it in choppy water. If it’s smooth, it’s a great board. It has a lot of flex like a snowboard so it lands very soft. I’d just like to find a board that’s that size that’s good in the chop.

Ok here's my take....I am 6" 2" 250 lbs., 57 years old and been skimming across the water on everything for about 45 years. Its all about the surface area! The more surface area you have the higher you ride in the water. Therefore, you have less of the board/edge in the water. This effects several things. Less board/edge in the water means less friction and more of a loose feeling board. Less board in the water also means it takes longer to decelerate the board before the turn to the wake(because less drag). And then to generate speed to the wake you need a greater distance to generate the same speed of a smaller board. Because the smaller board will sit deeper in the water and have more surface area to leverage for speed to the wake. Hope that makes sense. My set up is both bindings set to rear position on a board around 140 cm. This allows me to ride deeper in the water, which allows me to turn with more control and decelerate and accelerate at a faster rate. Figure out your weight per square in (lbs/ sq in) and go up or down from there. In closing, surface area is the most important factor here followed up by tail/nose shape and riding style.

Kevin, In general what you write is true, especially for surfboards, but with the thinner body and sharper rails of the newer wakeboards, you may find that you can bury a rail easier, and have the same solid tracking and amount of dig despite being on a bigger board. I'm in your generation (53) and I have an older board with softer rails, and my newer, bigger board tracks better, cuts sharper, pops higher and lands softer. Much more controllable, overall. It it literally a win-win-win-win situation. You should give a newer, bigger board a try and see if this holds true for you. I suspect you are going to LOVE it. Either way, thanks for representing us older guys who can still shred! You wouldn't happen to be from the CB area of FL, would you?
