I just want the area around my desk to look nicer.
I had this cheap scrap plywood stand that I put "temporarily" under my printer a few years ago, and I wanted to replace it with something that matched the rest of my desk, which is made of walnut.
Building a stand out of walnut seemed a bit extravagant, so I thought I'd try veneering it out of thin bits of walnut. But I discovered that I just don't have much scrap walnut right now. I wanted to keep this a cheap/free scrap-wood project so I looked at what ELSE I had on hand and picked out some junky Ash lumber. There was enough to build the stand, but the question now was if I could stain it to look like Walnut.
Do you think I succeeded?

That's a GREAT project Art. Especially given the fact that you "kept" it in the scrap wood category. A wonderful NAE project. (No Added Expense)! !! !!!

Good match, especially when you didn't use a walnut stain. I know the liquid Minwax stains will fully dry so that it won't be dissolved, but it can takes days. Could be the gel takes even longer.

I like the results of your experimentation. I tend to be lazy and would have painted it black to nearly match the file cabinet.

That would have been my last choice, but it would probably have been okay.

Nice job Art. That came out great; the color is a very close match.

Turned out really nice with the colors matching so well. I like the choice of a satin clear finish. I'm not a big fan of glossy finishes.

It looks great! Interesting how the second stain seemingly obliterated the first coat; it did turn into a nicely matching color.

I know! I have no idea about the chemistry of stains, but it makes me wonder...

The good thing with these small projects is you get to try things out, see what works and what doesn't and now you have more knowledge and tools in your back pocket for the next project. I think the trouble we get in sometimes is that wait to try out things on major or important projects.

I mostly work with Cherry, which was the problem here. But I had decided to make my desk out of Walnut the other year.... I keep hoping for "science" to give us back the American Chestnut so we can have another species to work with.

That looks very, very good. I hope you wrote down the "formula" for when you build a filing cabinet to match (nudge-nudge, wink-wink!).

  • @Wordsnwood

That's what the video is! But in this paper-less society, filing cabinets are becoming less and less relevant. I only have actual files in 1.5 of the drawers. The rest is random office storage. Still works well as a unit though.

I tried to do the same, also on an ash countertop, but with espresso stain from MinWax, not Varathane, here is the effect: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d5WhysN9dqzApMY.html
