I made a similar tool. I've found that putting it on an angle gives a better result. I believe that the piece holding the ball onto the bar was giving it more stability.

With this tool you can grind balls and thread them and get a handle for example on a lathe😉

If you were to come in from the very front, you could have made a round ball instead of an oval one. Of course you still would have come in from the side too for that option as well... Thumbs Up!
