Can I Get The Zoom G5n To Sound Like My Pedal Board?

As an amateur garage band false notes player, I use both a g5n and a g3xn simultaneously for venues. I have my g5n set up so I use it as a 4 effects at a time + expression pedal board, including noise gate and compressor, and the g3xn sports my amp simulations and after effects. With 7 accessible toggles and 2 expression pedals available at any one time, I can't say it's a true pedal board, but for 500$ that's certainly about the best you can get. And you can set different patches for different situations; that's like having about 150 (and counting) potentially different pedal boards at your disposal. Be it all different pedals altogether or just slightly significant variations of the same old loved ones, you are served as you like it at the press of a button. As long as you can find effects to suit your style, of course (I still can't get a satisfying, chugging and cutting metal sound out of them for the life of me).

Mate, after each pedal on the Zoom, just put in a Eq pedal and match your original pedal boards tone by boosting or sculpting the eq. Play around with the position of the eq in the chain. That's what a lot of pros do 😀👍

If you're using a real Amp too then overwrite the G5n Amp and Cab blocks with like Univibe and Delay. The patch path can be like "Guitar - [Distortion] - [Univibe] - [Delay] - [Reverb] - Amp" all four blocks matching up to the four foot-switches. There's also a Controller jack in the back for a Zoom FP-02M Expression Pedal were you can assign it to control the Univibe level effectively making it a on/off button.

Hey dave, nice video as usual. The scrolling thing does bother me a lot too (54:20 min). There is a easy fix: I usually run the g5n in the fx loop and another multi effect in front of the amp: noise reduction, overdrive, distortion. Honestly I dont use the amp simulation (pre amp on pre amp) my jcm2000 does the plexi or jcm800 job pretty nicely. Take care brother

Hey Dave your doing the right thing, stick with it, as I mentioned before I use a Zoom Multi FX pedal that has the same amp and cab models and FX as your rig. It took a little while to get used to the various mixing together of the various amp/cab models and combinations and FX modules in the zoom, but now I can get some great responsive tones from the pedal, with some of the FX and amp pedal combinations. I found adding the graphic equaliser module near the front and sometimes one at the end of the patch chains can make the world of difference to bring out the desired dynamic response and tones. I am amazed at what pretty convincing amp and overdrive tones I can achieve, that added to some quality modulations including delay and reverb can produce as you have found out some amazing sounds. As I say you only need a bit of time put in to create your own patches and once created I don't tend to fiddle with them. Enjoy your new Zoom Dave. Also have you tried the Line Select module which can turn on the next module in the chain, it might work for you. Also sometimes I find putting the Compressor module in front of or even behind a distortion/overdrive module can give it a bit more of a push.in the mid and lows.

Great video! Quick questions! 1) for the "clean:" sound from the Zoom..since both the analog board and the Zoom are going into the Marshall why is there any difference...or do you have an analog pedal on as part of your clean sound? 2) are you using just this Metal pedal to approximate the sound of both your analog gain pedals? Thanks again, love this!

The Zoom's are great bang for the buck, been using them for years. They react to dynamics in a way I prefer to Boss and a few others. Cleaner duties in the main here and The Twin amp is the basis of almost every patch. Even the piss cheap G1Xon has some great sounds in it and works great with my piezo acoustic and slide in a busking setup with a usable looper thrown in.

I own three (5, 3, 1). I do live gigs with a 5 going to a 3 - 5 does pedals, 3 does amps and after effects. That's all I need personnaly; they're pretty adequate hardware-wise so long I can find the sounds I'm looking after. The 1 I keep home for practice and research; I am considering either doubling it or upgrading either the 5 or the 3 and bringing it back home. They all use the same effects pool, so I don't have to bring the whole kit back from every practice to experiment or fine-tune.

@@EddieOtool I've literally just finished an ambient pedalboard setup which needed to be battery based. Using a powerbank and two 5V-9V converters I have an A1X Four >EHX Superego>MS50G>Ditto4>JamMan XT with a G1Xon that was sitting doing nothing on the Send/Return of the Superego which turns it into a whole different ballgame with the pedal and effects options. Bought them all sechand and compared to some pedalboards has cost peanuts. A friend has a reverb that cost about the same as the whole board and this has FAR more flexibility with sound-mangling and pad creation. Also, going the powerbank route has solved any noise issues to my satisfaction. Looks like we've both gone the two unit route and split effects/cabs/etc and, like you say, having a common workflow saves so much time. I wouldn't swap this for a Helix/whatever if it was offered just wanna make music.

I could be mistaken, but I thought Amp Modelling was designed to replaced amps and to be used DI into a PA or Audio Interface. Maybe you'd get a better tone if the Amp model section was bypassed and you used the Zoom's FX models straight into the MG. Just a thought.

  • @petercollins4030

Agreed! If Dave's comparing his pedal board into the front of his Marshall, he can just set the Zoom up as a chain of effects and leave out the amp model and put that through the front end. I use a Zoom G5N in my covers band and initially just used effects into the front of my amp. For more variety I've recently set up about half a dozen different patches with effects and an amp model but now go through the effects loop return straight into the power amp, bypassing the pre-amp.

Plugging the output of an amp modeller into a guitar amp connected to a guitar speaker is idio... not clever. You have a guitar and an amp modeller - BOTH of which are capable of producing frequencies beyond the capabilities of ANY dedicated guitar speaker. No wonder it sounds different, as you're essentially clipping it. Plug a modeller, physical or a software-based, into a big Bose L1 or a similar full-range, flat response amp/speaker and be amazed by what your guitar is capable of.

The scrolling is a problem, I have the G3X which has three effect windows at a time out of 6 total. I have noticed a partial solution built into the unit which may also apply to the G5n. When a patch is stored/saved, the scrolled position is saved too. In other words, Comp and ZNR could be in the put in the 1st and 2nd positions, then the user scrolls over 2 effects leaving 3 (3,4,5) empty effect windows showing. Then store/save the patch, whenever you recall that patch, it will be already scrolled to 3,4,5 showing. It's a partial solution.

Edit & Share helps for the older pedals - albeit most folks won't want to take a laptop to a gig. I have been reverse engineering most of the pedals (older G5, MS-70 CDR, B1On) and newer ones (B1XFour, G1XFour, G3n, G5n and my fave the GCE-3 that can emulate all of the above) controlled from a Raspberry Pi4. This is such a cool video :) If the amps settings have low treble maybe thats why you need the treble higher on the actual board? Also recent or modern metal pedals have so much more mids now cause modern metal is VERY middy, I think you might like lots of the newer metal pedals! Maybe try some out :) very punchy and middy and cutting just as you like! Btw I think the Zoom sounded very good maxed but your pedal board sounds epic, i love the characteristics of the distortion compared to the g5 but its pretty close :) I wanna hear some more distortion settings and amp models! haha

Thanks for your honest review. You mentioned that it is annoying to scroll up/down to adjust individual effects in a patch. Well, if you could hook it up to an android phone or PC then you’d be able to see all 9 slots in one shot (I think). If it is for live application, then I suggest the following (I don’t own the G5n but basing this on the million review videos I have seen). Assuming you don’t need more than 4 effects to be switched on/off in a song, you can make a patch and copy it four times and in each patch switch on/off individual effects/stomp boxes as needed and save the patches say at location 001, 002, 003, and 004. So now you can get up to four tones in song without scrolling (in memory mode). Between songs, you can switch to another set say 005,006, 007, and 008, etc to get different tones. Since there are 200 memory slots, it should not be a problem creating such several groups of 4 patches.

I use that way even on my Digitech RP360XP which has three footswitches to turn off/on three effects in the chain. I have the delay, the modulaton effect and the compressor/overdrive/distortion on it in all patches. Then I have three to four identical patches (amp/cab) each for a specific setup (guitar type) in a row so I can have three or four combinations of effects. In one I might have a Boss chorus clone in the next a uni-vibe for the modulation effects part and similar for overdrives etc. Thats perfect for onstage use.

@@lupo10 I think that is true and perhaps is standard rant for many G5n users. For me it was a kind of a deal breaker. Although, I read on FB forums that if two patches both have a looper then if you change the patch the loop continues but I can't test it obviously. Personally, I am not convenice if that will work based on the concept of the looper in G5n, which is ridculous, I might add. Currenlty, I use a Zoom G1Xon and overall like it but it's getting old and just wanted some new tones, so was searching for a new multi-fx pedal, and my first choice was G5n and second, Mooer GE150. However, accidently I came across the newly launched NUX MG-300. After seeing almost all the reivews, I finally ordered it (delivery awaited). It is much cheaper than G5n and should do the job. Nothing against G5n - it has great tones from what I hear.

@@lupo10 In my case(Digitech RP3060xp) no I dont lose the loop if I change the preset. My looper is not part of the preset its present in all presets anytime. And the sound is what preset was used when looping. But I have to use an external drum machine because the drum machine and the looper dont work at the same time on my Digitech RP360XP. They are exclusive.

I circumvented many of those problems by sending my g5 through a g3. g3 manages amps and after effects; g5 does pedals, noise gate, compression and expression. Honestly, that's enough hadware for me, and I have a reputation of being quite whizzy. Inbefore doubling the pedals, I always felt too restricted; but never since.

Hey Dave, just saw this video last night, it sounds fine, it's strange all the settings have to be maxed out to get the desired sound. As for the scrolling hassles, at 1st I thought just plug in an external control switch and assign it to the effect but, unlike the G3x, the G5n with only accept an expression pedal on the control jack. Zoom has had this scrolling interface for at least 9 years and they don't seem to care about ease of use. I have some ideas that I sent to them concerning improvements to the interface of all their units that use scrolling. I`ll put it in the next comment. Tell me if you think the changes would improve the usefulness of scrolling.

Have you heard of the terminated headphone plug trick to make the ME-80 sound better coming out the main outputs? The terminated plug enables a really good speaker simulation made for the headphones but it also affects the main outputs making them sound better too! There should be YT videos showing just how to do it.

I've been experimenting with digital and analog effects (single treadmills and multi-effects units) for probably 30 years. In the end I always came back to my own assembled board for live gigs, although it is heavier, more error-prone and ugly than most multi-effects units. Even if newer digital effects are better now: especially the distortion / overdrive effects sound rather bad in the multi-effects units live over the amp. Too glaring, too flat or too muddy. Even though I always turn off the speakers and amp sims, of course. However, the multi-EFX have the advantage that they are light and smaller than a self-assembled board. Besides, if you want to make the time investment, you can prepare ready-made patches for each song for a gig. This can be useful. Where I find multi-EFX really useful is for home recording and where you don't want to or can't use a big amplifier. For direct into the desk or into a DAW, the Multi-Efx sound very good and have a lot of sound possibilities that you can't have on an analog board. Is also a matter of taste. If I do not have much time and space at a gig, or no transporter (car / truck) is available, such a Multi EFX can be the solution. Often less is more - whether digital or analog: For many gigs an overdrive, a chorus, a reverb, tremolo, phaser and wah wah is enough. You can do a lot with that. I use the ME-80 as well as the Zoom G3X - but now ordered the G5n.

The original old Zoom G5 had several global settings that adjusts it depending on what you're plugging into (direct, front of amp, effects return, combo amp, amp stack etc) .... Not sure if the Zoom G5n has the same, but maybe check it in the manual or poke around in the menus for it. You might find it sounding better or closer to what you expect when that's adjusted. Also, as another person commented already, if you're running it into an amp and if you're using the amp sims, either ensure the clean channel is neutral as possible or run it straight into the effects return bypassing your amp's preamp. Either way bypass the cab sim, as you already have that covered with a real cab/speakers.

Dave a very interesting exercise and compulsive viewing. . I've learnt a lot about multieffects pedals but I haven't changed my mind. Personally, pedals win hands down. Life's too short to spend hours on micro-tweaking. The pedals sound authoritative to me, whilst the multieffects unit sounds kind of apologetic! Pedals dial-in in a few minutes' adjustment and their controls are usually far less sensitive to small changes. The other thing to bear in mind is reliability - are you going to buy a back-up ZOOM? Thanks for a great video!

One solution is just saving two presets, one with delay and the other dry, so you just have to switch one or the other preset...wth the G5n is not practical thinking in terms of "effects chain", but use it more as "presets". Anyway, sometimes is very useful the expression pedal, to activate one effect (for example using the delay in the pedal)

@@CentaurusRelax314 you have hit the nail: you can activate reverbs and delays tails, BUT that only works when you press the efect INTO the preset, not when you go to another preset. To me that´s not a problem anyway, cause the presets change is very smooth and there´s not "gap" at all. I´ve been using this unit since about two years and is very cool for many reasons. But to me, to get "punch" and "balls", valve pedals and preamps are better option than modelers, even for DI recording. Anyway, every kind of gear is useful, it depends of the sound you are looking for ...

I desperately need a multi effects unit to play with my band cos been lending pedals from mates when I can so constantly using different pedals all the time, which obviously is annoying!! Due to some little scrote in Manchester nicking my Line 6 M13 which despite being big I loved. So I need to bite the bullet and buy something even though I shouldn’t really but the music matters!! I can either get a used G5N for £120 or a Line 6 M9 for £110 I tempted to go for the G5N but then think M9????? Ahhhh!!! Not sure which to one to hit the button and go for? If you can mate please can you advise and tell me what you would go for? Cheers Steve

In answer to my own question. Yeah I can. So I bought it as I wanted a looper and a drum machine. The Boss RC-10 had both things I needed but it was £50 more than the Zoom so I went with the loom. I can confirm that: Guitar into the front of the amp, this gave me access to clean, crunch OD1 and OD2 and the digital effects that I like in the MG. Zoom in the pedal loop, created a patch with RC Drive, that awesome metal pedal, drum machine, double slot Mono Looper and the Waw100. I also tried it into the front only the amp which I loved too. Think I’ll just swap around, when I want the amp models I can run it into the front end of the manual channel and go back to the loop when I don’t need them. Awesome bit of kit. Only been playing a couple of months, uploaded a video yesterday of my first loop I created when it got delivered if anyone is bothered.
