A few things I want to clear up: 1. Please wear eye and hand protection if you try this! I'm really sorry that I did not represent this well. I had watched so many tutorials of people successfully breaking glass that it led me to underestimate the risks. I forgot I was watching pros (hence didn't see mistakes) as well as very rarely seeing their faces since the focal point was on their hands. 2. If I ever apply to be a detective or historian please be kind and strike from the record my very poor explanation of the West Germany mercury glass timeline 🙈 that was rough I'm so sorry.

LOVED this video! I watch DIY videos on youtube all the time and this one was both entertaining and informative. I definitely kept saying to myself "she should be wearing eye protection". I've seen videos where people went in after the initial video creation and added a text streamer to add to it such as "Always wear eye protection"....

Very helpful advice! I’m working on a DIY mirror project for my home gym using large restaurant mirrors. If I record the progress I’ll be sure to tag you 🙌🏼
I think Wendy is one of the only people that could actually pull this off

This video gives me so much anxiety. I work at a place where we work with glass and mirrors. First off all you have to be really careful with mirrors, when it breaks it is more dangerous than normal glass. Never! manipulate glass without glass gloves, the oils of your hand can make the glass slip of your hands. If you are going to sand it with a dremel you should use running water so it won't heat up and break, and it solve the problem of the dust. Don't seat down if you are working with glass, you don't want glass falling on your thighs. And I repeat it again be really careful with mirrors, I've seen a man who have years off experience cutting glass been cut by broken glass and he almost lost his hand. Another thing, if you are cutting glass make sure is not tempered glass otherwise it will burst into small pieces and you will end with no glass.

Very good info Victoria Melara! I wonder if anyone besides me bothered reading it!. I noticed that Wendy and her friend didn't use the gloves that she told the rest of us to use!😥

Thank you for this. I'm in glass school and I would not suggest glass cutting as a diy.. it should be done outside because of the glass dust. You dont want the dust in the room that you are living and cooking in, it's not good for the health. Definitely not with only socks on. Im sorry wendy

Thanks for the info, I knew it wasn't smart to cut glass without gloves but it's better to get an explanation from a professional.

God this. I was so scared it was going to shatter on her.
@cheria9399

Yeah, i was thinking the same that she would have been better off bringing all this to do outside. Even her spray painting part should have been done outside cuz the kitchen fans will just suck up the spray paint and make it harder for her to clean later on. Grease is annoying enough to clean.
Since the stamp on the mirror said "west germany", which means it wasn't manufactured earlier than 1945, and Wikipedia said mercury was used for mirrors until 1930, there was no way the mirror could've been made with mercury. So no need for the sparkling test ;)
@jlammetje

Yeah, I don't get why she didn't continue her search on west germany, she should've been able to find that fairly quickly...

Oh Wendy 🤦🏻♀️ I did not do the best job explaining our mercury investigation and completely missed including the beginning of West Germany, my bad! Still not regretting the sparkle test though to feel as sure as possible 😂

EYE PROTECTION WENDY. Cool mirrors tho
Germany wasn‘t yet divided in 1930 (it was from 1949-1990), therefore it was already implausible that the mirror was affected

Love that she used the diy harness in the re-enactment
I think they would be much safer attached to the wall with mirror clips. You have both of them just leaning against the wall at an angle. Since they do not have frames, this puts a lot of stress on the glass, especially the tall one with the arched top because the top is only touching the wall at one point (the middle of the arch). It's very unstable. As a Californian I am always aware of earthquake risk when decorating ( tall bookshelves are always attached to the wall at the top, I don't hang heavy pictures or have any shelves above the head of my bed, etc). Toronto is not as earthquake prone but they have had some.
@clairevanloon2

The glass can also break just because of the stress that has been put on it. An Earthquake will too, but the stress you can put on glass will make it break as well.
I actually love the imperfections like the raggedy edges and the loss of the mirror colour behind the glass , makes it character-full and rustic . Good job 👍
this gives me too much anxiety! y'all aren't even wearing gloves 😫😫😫

Oh my gosh THANK YOU WENDY!!! I've literally been trying to find a good video on cutting full-length mirrors to have an arch at the top and could not for the life of me find any good ones that didn't look extremely dangerous until now. Both of your mirrors turned out amazing!! Wendy tries, Wendy succeeds!!

@@withwendy Baumgartner Restoration is highly critiqued for not using the right restoration measures; he either uses old techniques or does some of the steps in a wrong way just because it looks good on camera; I recommend reading on Reddit about him. Just an FYI! Used to binge his videos too, before I found out.

@@didicaveronica Surprised by this assessment as he explains in his publically available videos why he uses particular techniques. Professional art restorers are extremely rare, so the community itself is quite small and insular. Reddit on the other hand is full of anonymous trolls.
This is fascinating. I will need to watch it a few times. My mom was a landscape artist and among her many other mediums also worked with glass. I remember her scoring and breaking off pieces of beautiful colored glass for mosaics. ❤️ She also taught herself to sew after my dad unexpectedly passed away and her custom made and couture clothing was no longer affordable. You are lovely and so creative. I’m going to enjoy watching your videos.
One of the few diy youtubers that aren't intolerable. I enjoy your vibes very much. 😊👍🏽
i've been watching baumgartner restoration channel for a year now and it helps me fall asleep so well, i love his voice and the tranquility of all the videos.
Incredible!!! I find your videos both inspiring and soothing, exactly the kind of thing I love watching these days 🥰
I’m so happy someone made the video that I needed. I’ve been searching on KZread for months for a Parisian mirror diy and everything was the same ol “spray paint it gold” . I’m so happy 😭❤️
Oh please wear safety glasses when cutting glass! Small splinters can chip off and fly into your face. When you showed all the supplies you had gloves and mask but no eye protection.
That was such a treat to watch. I don’t have any of those tools, nor do I have a spare mirror to try this with, but I loved the results and I’m filing this away in case I ever get a chance to try this in the future with an old mirror. Thanks for filming and sharing this! 🤩
Love the confidence your videos give me to do things on my own. Always wanted to do this with my $30 craigslist mirrors!
Wow you’re so crafty! I wish I was anywhere as close as this! You’ve inspired me to start re-learning how to sew!
Thanks for info on mercury in mirrors. I would not have thought to check that. Glad to see that in spite of your worries and hesitation, you went ahead with the project anyway.
Her blush looks super pretty. Beautiful!
I would never think of doing this! So cool, thanks for the tutorial!
I stray from your videos sometimes but every time I watch one again I’m reminded of the good content u put out! Ah I love it and your aura def need to stay in tune.
Wow, I'm very impressed with how well this came out!
You sooth me and inspire me to try new things ☺️
are you litterally my saviour, I've been looking for a new mirror to looking to diy other mirrors so u are the best for this, I love you!!!!
I loved the spray paint idea with the paper bag
I tried cutting a mirror a few years ago, I still have most of the mirror in my storage shed. Thanks to your video I think I am up for trying again
I really like the ruff edges and on the mirrors makes them look very rustic
😲 Baumgartner Restoration is one of my absolute favorite channels to watch! It's just so... Mesmerizing 😆
you are just so adorable!! i loved this! i'm a chem student and this is a VERY similar technique to one we use to prepare glass plates for samples! I am definitely going hunting for mirrors at good will once this is all over
This is the first time I’m watching any of your videos and I think you are wonderful!
Somethings you just have to buy😭😂🤷🏾♀️ this is to risky for me
You did a great job Wendy ! I love your videos. Funny how when I want to do a project up pops up your videos like you are reading my mind. Lol. You always save the day. Thanks 💐
I loove how this turned out. Somehow i thought this would be way more difficult. Can we have a house plant tour and how u take care of them? I find my indoor plants always look kind of sad..
Fantastic Wendy! And nice little history lesson/ informative segment. 😁
Havent finished watching the video yet but I just had to say I looooove your long white dress shirt/tunic thing! So cool!
First great job...what courage! The finished mirror is beautiful . Both of you should be so proud. The roundness brings a Zen type of feeling... Here a cyber high five!
Never in my wildest dreams did I think Baumgartner and Wendy would have some sort of connection! Baumgartner gave me enough videos to help me relax and fall asleep when I started working night shift. And you inspired me to pick up on my interest in sewing, which came in handy during this quarantine. (I already made two bedsheets, a pair of shorts and I have a blouse for my sister that I am working on.)
I have been thinking about doing this too to have round cornered mirrors. Thank you so much!!
I was just thinking about cutting and rounding our mirrors, thanks for trying it first. I was super nervous. 🤗

Oh my god the art restoration channel popped up in my recommendations and I find it reeeaally relaxing. 🙈
Love this idea!
If anybody could pull this off, it would be you. Great job 👏
I loved this video so much in it's entirety. That being said and on top of all other history classes here in the comment section, as a German I want to add: It is not technically the end of _West_ Germany that marked what ended what needed to be called West Germany. It was the _end of the GDR_ (And "East Germany") as part of the collapse of the Soviet Union. West Germany was regular Germany with its East ripped out of it, fenced in and made another country. Lots of love to this great channel and the comment section :)
So creative, wish I had the guts to do this !!
That's scary 😊 so brave wendy. Good job!
I love that you used a clip from Undercover Brother when talking about spy movies! Growing up, I used to watch it all the time 😭

I’ve been watching baumgartner for literal YEARS! He’s one of my fav KZreadrs.
I love this channel so much ❤️
your mirrors came out beautiful for all the struggle you feel like you had! just a quick note about the spray paint hood trick... be careful if your hood doesn't actually have a vent that leads outdoors. we have a hood in our apartment but there's no vent installed, so all the air just gets blown out near the top of the hood back into the kitchen.
i clicked for a vid and it turns out to be a thriller short movie and im here for it
Ok but this makes you next-level powerful than you already were with your diy abilities
2:15 i love julian baumgartner's art restoration videos, they're so satisfying yet interesting and educational!! just ike your videos :)
omg i LOVE Baumgartner Restoration!
THIS IS SO COOL!!!
You are the most amazing person!
Beautiful diy
Wendy!! I love you, I love your videos and your mirrors turned out great! I just was really concerned when I saw your spray paint technique. I can see your thought process, but I worry about the particles that may have been not only close to your food/food prep areas, but the spray potentially being caught in your stove vent that with time, use, heat and steam could still be released while you cook :0 it probably would've been better had you sprayed near your bedroom rather than your consumption area, though I would still recommend only spraying outside in open air, I might investigate a cleaning of your kitchen vents. I love you!!!
Love watching you do it! I don’t think I will try it though. 😁
You did a fantastic job
I’ve been wanting to do this for a while and never found a tutorial video that actually reflected what I was imagining. This is it! Also, I think the imperfections give it more of that vintage vibe 💘
really enjoyed watching this tutorial . thank you :)
