Celine Dion sang a *cover* of this song. She is not the original artist. She's not even the second artist to perform the song. She's way down the list. The song was written and first performed by Eric Carmen (released in 1975). Carmen grabbed a theme from Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto #2 in C Minor, took the chorus from an earlier Carmen song; he supplied lyrics and mashed it all together into the ear worm that today sticks in our heads. So the song is kind of like Adagio, which Dimash also has covered - written and first performed by Lara Fabian, who grabbed a theme from an earlier classical work, added lyrics and brought it to the world. Classical-contemporary hybrid songs like these perfectly suit Dimash, who is quite comfortable hybridizing classical and contemporary sounds with his voice. Indeed, this is precisely the creative hybridization that Igor Krutoy so often attempts to capture with his composing style, and it's why Dimash is the ideal singer for many of Krutoy's compositions. I never think of this as a Celine Dion song. I remember when the Eric Carmen original came out. I loved it then and I love it now. But Dimash owns the song now as far as I'm concerned.

@@jyroflux Carmen wasn't much of a vocalist, honestly, but he was a sincere one. He meant what he sang. He convinced. Do you remember the wonderful piano interlude he included in his performance of the song? He channels Rachmaninoff for over a minute in a live pop concert! Rare to see in pop music. Celine's interpretation on stage has always struck me as unpleasantly nasal, and rather more arrogant than sincere, but there is no denying her vocal agility. She blasts past Carmen's technical vocal skills. But she doesn't get the emotions right for the song. Dimash inserts a plaintive tone. I sense no arrogance coming from him - and he uses the more assertive passages, not in a demanding way, but to express desperation, I think. He keeps enough of the piano interlude to please, but I suppose modern audiences have become less tolerant of longer doses of classical music, so that element of Carmen's presentation has been cut way down. Oh, well. I can find fault with all of them. I can find merit in all of them. Sometimes I wonder if my opinion is so riddled with contradictions, it's useless. :P

When Eric Carmen performed this song in the 70's on the Midnight Special TV show (on Y.Tube) he plays a long piano solo, probably in recognition of the fact that the chorus and bridge melody lines were taken from Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto. Maybe that is the reason for the instrumental passage in this arrangement. Carmen thought that the copyright to the piece had expired, but he was wrong and had to give 12% of the songwriting royalties to Rachmaninoff's heirs. Celine's cover probably made them rich. I'm glad you chose this performance, because when you watch later ones you can tell that the audience has seen this one, and are anticipating the ending. And sometimes Dimash teases them a bit by delaying the climax of the song for a second.

That does happen, but then again I've done some things listening to DImash songs alone in a room that would look fake on camera, like laughing maniacally or bursting into tears😂.

Always enjoy your reactions n comments. Couple things: fellow with glasses camera pans often during Singer Competition, is Terry Lin. At that time period he is in early 50's Terry n Dimash became great friends n Dimash calls him PapaLin . Well worth watching. "Terry Lin visit Dimash at Xmas." Title is little miss leading. Real life, and shows how humble these two power houses are. Believe Terry's wife is doing recording n once in while can see his son, like leaning against wall. Hi Molly, And interesting thing about this song is that when Celine recorded it , she did not have it written for her , it was a cover song written by Eric Carmen. Eric Carmen I believe is in his 70's today and he is from Cleveland. He had a Cleveland based band in the early 70's called the Raspberries that was short lived and went on to do a solo career afterward. In the mid 70's he released an album where this song was number one or 2 for a few weeks.. Since this was so long ago many of the KZread people were not even born. So that is why everyone thinks Celine Dion was the original artist. In a similar manner. the Beatles made a big hit of the song " Twist and Shout". Everyone including me thought they wrote it. It was a cover song originally released by the Isley Brothers in 1962. Eric Carmen was not a big song writer, but did pretty well for himself. He is also write " Hungry Eyes " that was a song featured in the movie sound track of Dirty Dancing.

I don't think 50 people really needed to point this out.

Please be aware that this song is not Celine Dion's song. Eric Carmen wrote and sang it in the 70s or 80s. Long before Celine sang it for the movie soundtrack.

The original is by Eric Carmen. Celine just sang a cover of it and it didn't go as high in the charts as the original by Eric did. As far as health I took over the role as female to take care of home & family when I was 9 when my mother's mind & health started to go and she passed when I was 14 so I totally understand limits.🎶👱‍♀️👗👠👠💓

To me his various renditions supercede Celine's cover, just my opinion. Some may disagree, that's okay. Different strokes... I do love Celine's originals though, like the Titanic song. Tysm for this reaction🤗.

You dont compare celine and dimash. Two different person. He made it his own. We respect that you stock with celine performance because thats what you had been hearing all the time. Dimash dont copy the original he made his own mark. I love celine and her performance but i love dimash performance better.
