Can fantasy BIKINI ARMOR be justified? Discussion and Reply to Skallagrim

What are the different ways that fantasy, or barbarian, bikini armor, including the infamous chainmail bikini, can be justified? What weapons would work best with this style of armor, and can we even call it armor in the first place?
This is a reply and discussion to Skallagrim who recently made a video discussing many of the points I've raised before:
My first video on the fantasy barbarian: • Video
Skallagrim's video on barbarian bikini armor: • Barbarian Bikini Armor...
My video on sexualisation and power fantasy: • Sexualisation and Male...

Fun fact: In the original Conan books, he wore the best armor available whenever he had the opportunity (though he did get into situations where he was stripped down to nothing fairly regularly). Indeed, if one were to build Conan in Dungeons & Dragons, he wouldn't be a Barbarian at all, he'd be a multiclass Fighter/Rogue with the Sailor background.

I can definitely see maille "clothing" being a sign of wealth and status; firstly because this type of ornamentation would likely be extremely expensive, but also because emulating a warrior's prestige item with clothing would be an expression of power. Ornamental maille would also likely be a way for a craftsman to showcase his skill as well with how fine and delicate the rings are.

kinda like having a BBQ gun. If you don't know, it's a fancy gun to show off on SUndays with your family, mostly all for looks, often smaller or a different style of gun than one would use for an every day carry. Most importantly, you never really intend to use it other than to maintain it, and that's why it's fancy. revealing chain mail garments seem similar. Some people wear a vest w armor plates or kevlar for style, they could use more armor to be actually protected, but it's meant more for style, w the secondary ability to stop a small caliber round if it hits torso. The fashion argument this dude brought up got me most sold on the idea bc I can see examples like it all around me.

A reasonable video overall, and a good addition to the perpetual discussion of boob armor/mail bikini/female warrior apparel in various fantasy narratives. A few points to add: 1. Different forms of physical exertion build up different muscle groups, so taking cues from contemporary athletes while designing physique of a fantasy character might work or might backfire. A sprinter or a gymnast probably won't be the best model for a warrior wielding a massive melee weapon. Conversely, a weightlifter won't do as the basis of design for a fencer. But either way, generous boobage + wasp-thin waist is a body type of an instagram influencer "improved" by a generous amount of Photoshop, not any actual human woman engaging in combat on regular basis. 2. If you go for a reasonable design by giving your scantily-clad barbarian two handed weapon instead of shield+weapon combo, especially when that two-handed weapon is a longsword or sth with similar grip, don't undo all your work by giving the character big boobs clad in a stiff chest-piece, including a plate bikini bra. She won't be able to properly grip that weapon in that gear. On that note, if you go to the effort of working out what sort of weapon would be reasonable given your character's physique and culture, do the same for clothing construction. Want to put your well-endowed barbarian amazon in a leather/fur/mail biking? Sure. Don't make the bra just 2 triangles tied together by a thin string. This design my work for sunbathing and maaaybe slow strolling down the beach, but nothing more strenuous. If you do the work of designing the culture of your barbarians to justify putting the women in warrior bikinis, then do the work of designing the bikinis in a way that makes sense. Look up how an actual sport bras or bras designed for a big-breasted woman look like. Rule of thumb: big swords and tiny bikinis are for suitably tall and toned but rather average-breasted women. The ones with more generous boobage need weapon+shield combo or some sort of weapon on a pole suitable for wider grip and a well-constructed breast support garment. 3. Mail/plate bra-shaped clothing as a fashion statement? Yep, that's valid. Mail/plate bra-shaped clothing worn over a bare skin day-to-day? Nope, no way. What works for a fantasy-inspired photo-shoot won't work for any prolonged wear. And nipple chafing is just a (very male-centered) tip of the iceberg here. It would be more like all around chafing, but especially under the bra straps (boobs weight, and this weight pulls on any arm or under-boob/torso straps). Stays-made out of soft fabric and flexible boning not hard metal and with way-better weight-distribution design-were still ALWAYS worn over a shift, even when the stays themselves were meant to be a visible fashion piece not just an utilitarian support garment. Some discomfort in the name of fashion is acceptable-inviting certain injury? Nope. Even today a woman might prefer stilettos to sneakers, but will chose ones that don't rub her heels/toes raw.

In most historical human cultures the male warriors would dress 'sexy' (this rather tailed off in Europe from the later 19th century, trailing civilian norms which had changed in the early 19c), while women were not warriors at all. But there were certainly double standards for male and female attire in most cultures, as there is today. So if men wear oversized shoulder pauldrons and women wear chain bikinis, both in the name of fashion, I can't really see an issue with that. The women are emphasising their boobs, the men are emphasising their shoulders.

They need to tune there magic to this specific blade and then void store it (so not sure if that steel blade is made of steel any longer). even if you as a caster have the strength to wear plate armor you usually dont because plate messes things up whit casting.

In ancient warfare, slingers would be the biggest reason to bring a shield. Nobody wants to invest years of training and a small fortune on a the perfect specimen of a muscle and battle prowess only to have some shepherd nobody chuck a pebble into his brain. Fun fact: In the original Conan The Barbarian stories he didn't willingly go without armor, the plot was written in such a way that he either had his armor removed, or got caught up in dangerous situations without any armor. His lack of armor was a plot device, rather than the character actively eschewing armor. The few times he did eschew armor was because he wasn't expecting to get into a fight, such as when climbing the tower of the evil sorcerer Yara.

Howard understood melee combat well enough to recognize that armor is usually a no-brainer. One thing I love about the Conan stories is that his armor actually works! In Queen of the Black Coast, for example, when the crew shatter their spears on his scale hauberk while he ignores defense and goes full murder. And Conan on the offense is a storm that you don't want to be caught in! "A giant in black plate, who roared and smote like a hurricane." Howard was a literary God.

Fishnets are actually surprisingly good clothing. They're usually made of synthetic microfiber which are very flexible and tear resistant, and the fishnet pattern actually holds air bubbles which helps keep you warm - the orange spacesuit they wear on NASA missions, if you look closely at the material, is fishnet! And you can wear JUST that in space and maintain pressure and warmth! The big bulky suits protect you from heat, glare, radiation and have waste disposal and life support, but if you pop out for a quick smoke by the airlock your orange pajamas and an oxygen mask are all you need.

I could see "chainmail fashion" as being a symbol of status. Say the son/daughter of the chieftain, or an honored warrior in their tribe. Metal would be more rare than animal skins for a group that hunts for their food, but may not be a culture of miners. In that type of culture, fast attacks, stealthy hunting, and potentially intimidating physicality would be a way of life. In a story I'm writing, I created a culture that prizes metal because they have none of their own, and don't know how to mine/forge, so they fight against those with metal weapons, metal armor, shields, whatever they may have. The one that kills a warrior with a dagger, an ax, or a sword, is an honored warrior in the tribe. The problem with that is the tribe refuses to distinguish a woodcutter felling a tree from a soldier, and prefers to go after the one with less armor.

It is said that, the soon to be king, Kamehamea (I don't know how to write that) exchanged a expensive cloak made of red feathers for 10 crappy knives, so he woulld have iron weapons. I had a theory about this. I noticed the "bikini" armor is only ever seen in high fantasy settings where magic is a thing or in sci-fi settings where highly advanced technology is a thing. This led me to believe that the person in question is actually wearing a full suit of armor but is using some form of magic or technology to make most of it invisible. As for why they would do this, I can think of three reasons. The first is that it's purely astetic and they just like the way it looks. On the more practical side, because the enemy can't see the armor, they would have a harder time trying to find the weak points. Also, if they were facing an inexperienced enemy who was easily distracted or shaken, then showing a little skin could cause them to think with the wrong head.

Seeing a person wearing cloth tunics would give the same effect, raising the question as to why only scanty female armor has such properties. It doesn't hold up because A) lighter armor is more comfortable and as such everyone would be using that style of armor, male or female and B) if it is magic/tech you'd have to do some serious mental gymnastics to explain why clothes can't be worn with such a defense system. The only way to justify it is as the video states; there is some cultural precedent where showing off ones figure in combat is the norm.

Nice video shad! I like the fashion argument. Note that Red Sonja, the comic book character famed for the chainmail bikini outfit. She is not really a barbarian. Conan is. Red Sonja is some sort of religious warrior that never beds a man unless he defeats her in honest combat first. Maybe her armor is even chasity-armor. She is extremly strong though in the comic. But if you have fantasy races that is so damn strong they can use weapons like that shown in the galleries passing by in the video. Would armor even be effective? You and Skall should bring your favouriteswords one day and add twice or thrice the weight (somehow) and then test it against the bikiniarmor. Or a shield. Maybe one can hope that the blade would glance off, but not much more. My point is there is a limit of how thick you can make armour and shields or screens and still be mobile. Say thay you add magic fireballs as a type of artillery. Then you are really in the gunpowder era. Here mobility is the best protection really. Historical and fantasy settings are different things. About arrowfire. That kind of massed archery was used at long distance in battles. Not intended for individual targets.

So, if you take the pauldron as an always-equipped backup weapon rather than armor, it is kinda legit.

I was recently thinking about some characters i'm writing, and how their attire changes thru the course of the story, reflecting their needs. A lot of good points here! Now, i'm thinking in the case of 'bikini armor' to be practical, would not be a thong as popularly depicted. Instead it would be more like athletic apparel. Most likely a base layer of leather or a durable fabric, with plate, chainmail, or a combination of the two for the outer layer. The 'cosmetic chainmail' you described, made for aesthetic appeal and not for combat, would 9/10 be a lousy choice to wear in combat. That said, i can see those who can afford it, having it for appeal/status, to project power, and possibly a few reasons i haven't thought of.

These considerations were very interesting. My thought is, is that most of the practical considerations, like we see here, were lost in the transition from tabletop to video games. Both systems make an abstraction, but video games are far more limited in the scope of that abstraction, because they can't do everything, or address every situation. TT can through negotiation and reason plot out a lot of these things, and it would happen to various degrees. Video games people roll with the hand given, and stopped thinking about it altogether I think.

As my wife often say: "I want to believe that I am damn hot and sexy! Just as guys like to believe they are buff and hot, we also want to see ourselves being hot beyond belief." I could not agree more. US military today allowed make-up and lipstick for women combatants! Today! Not a joke, google it. It is the law! So if we allow today make-up in combat for the only visible skin part of a woman, then what's stopping you from doing the same "beautification" for a barbarian woman? It may also come as a very bold and intimidating move. Just as the Highlanders or Germanic "barbaric" tribes had men that went in the battle naked, or half naked, in a display of force and bravado, so then female warriors can do! They could be "sexy and hot" just to signal to others "I can take you all while looking like that! Better beware!" That or to attract the opposite gender, that will appreciate both their physique and their appeal.

Make-up, to a degree, is allowed in the Dress and Appearance standards, which does not generally change in combat environments. Just keep in mind its very conservative make-up, so natural tones only, no hot pink or red.

I think the problem is in assuming everyone has the same motivations. As I guy, whether I’m interested in identifying with a buff guy depends entirely on the world building, character and if it’s a game, play style. For example huge part of what makes Elric of Melniboné an interesting character, is how weak and frail he is on his own. If you portray him as a buff dude, you ruin it. The other aspect to me for immersion, and e.g. why I got utterly bored by the last 2-3 seasons of GoT and pretty much every superhero movie, is if actions don’t have consequences. So I’d love if a game would allow me to storm into combat naked with nothing but face paint, giving me an agility and endurance bonus. But if I’m not skilled and extremely careful about my moves, I should be losing limbs left and right. Doesn’t mean it has to be completely realistic, but just give a sense that there is something at stake when making decisions. I have no problem with over the top physiques and sexiness, but if everyone does the same, it becoming a bunch of cliches, and looks/designs are just completely detached from everything else, it just gets bland to me. And that doesn’t just apply to women characters. I had a hard time getting into Sons Of Anarchy at first watch due to parts of the male cast looking much more like hand cream models than bikers.

@@victorsmoebaumann6040 Is a game of numbers, most men want this type, you're a minority. But there are plenty of games that offer body customizations and you can create your ideal character. That being said, all romantic movies have tall, handsome, rich duded in them. Not a single poor fat middle aged dude as the love interest. They do have other types of course, but just to support the woman while getting to the tall handsome and rich guy, or as a comedic relief "look a the fat shorty trying to pick up the girl, lol". So, yeah. That too...
