Can cognitive science help explain what causes political extremism?

As COVID-19 spurred an unprecedented season of political football, scientists sought ways to adapt to new research protocols. Using a Friends of BrainHealth grant, cognitive neuroscientist Michael Lundie, PhD, leveraged this challenging moment to launch a novel study into the intricacies of metacognitive markers, in an effort to unravel the unprecedented cognitive warfare that erupted during the lockdown.
Since receiving his grant, the essence of his research career has become focused on how these metacognitive markers help shed light upon the effectiveness of political influence campaigns and social media, elevating our understanding of how purpose, meaning and connectedness can enhance brain health and reasoning abilities.
The Friends of BrainHealth donor circle provides critical support for life-changing studies, raising more than $4.3 million since 2008 and launching dozens of cutting-edge cognitive research studies. Annual seedling grants for early-career brain health researchers helps to inspire a new generation of scientists and a new era of transformative brain health breakthroughs.
