AB inbevs approach to Camden is how they should have treat all the British breweries. Here's a load of money for merch and advertising, keep doing what you're doing and make us money

Have to disagree, AB inbevs approach to Camden is to move brewing to Wales, Brew at high gravity, switch to Hop extract and most importantly they now pasteurize the beer which was the whole point of the original beer!

Just got back from Germany where I had my mind blown by the beer! (didn’t know the football was on cos I don’t follow it 🤦🏻♂️) I think Gilde pilsner from Hannover was my favourite. It was a real eye opener for me regarding beer and the German attitude to beer. What an amazing place. Can’t wait to go back!
Yes Simon! This is the type of content we want. Just to point out though that when you start to take price into account you can almost always buy 2 x 10 multipacks of Lost Lager at Morrisons for £17. That then makes it the equivalent of 96p for 500ml. Totally changes the equation if you are happy to buy in bulk.

Very good point there
Great vid. The quality of the stuff in supermarkets in Germany is so superior. So many breweries local to the city you're in that spank big brand names.
I live 600m away from the Höfbrau brewery, great beer but the locals have only 1 choice Augstiner. Höfbrau hardly comes on offer, also it's a government owned brewery, but they still do brewery tours (abeit the shop being closed 😞). Normally the bottle here is 1€ per bottle in a crate of 20.

I live between Yorkshire and Bavaria. You guys wouldn't believe the selection of beers you get in supermarkets in Germany. And the prices are crazy. Krombacher by the way not considered good at all ,can get 20 x 500 ml bottles in a crate from Rewe supermarkets at times for €14 !!! In lockdown i was over there ,i must have tried over 200 types of lagers and pilsners 😂! All between 75c to 1,05c . Then u get 8c back for the bottles

Somebody finally talking sense! I live in Siegen as a Brit. The beers in Germany are ok, but the saying ‘you don’t know what you’re missing until it’s gone’ comes to mind. There are some absolutely barnstorming British beers. All of my German beer enthusiast close friends love the British beers and brew their own stouts, ales for years. The casual drinkers in Germany are very insulated and only drink German beers and have a bit of a superiority complex, so that is one thing I find much more sympathisch with British drinkers. Both countries make great beers, but Krombacher isn’t one of them!
Love it. Great review. I don't touch Brewdog on a point of principle. Just about shat myself 2 minutes from the end 🐈😂

Agreed. When I lived in Germany there were so many beers, all delicious. There were (and still are I suppose), 'alt biers' (old beers), which are darker and much more like our light or pale ale which are equally delicious but not really like pils. I particularly looked forward to visiting Dusseldorf and drinking Dussel alt. I'm surprised the German supermarkets don't try it over here but maybe it doesn't travel? I only ever saw it on draft not bottles so who knows?
Love the honest approach
Thanks for highlighting that Czech brewed Staropramen is available in Lidl. Had some tonight and it is so much better than UK version. Cheers to you Simon🎉

Where have you been? Finally showing up in my YT feed. Great video despite the crazy cat. Had a laugh when you burped during the HB tasting, lol.
Technically the Camden Hells is a mixture of a Helles and a Pilsner. Really underrated beer. Tends to get looked down on these days because it’s popular. Weirdly, I’ve found that if you drink it out of a 330 bottle you get much flavour from the German hops whereas in the glass it’s a more rounded beer.

Yes I agree, people hate on British lager as it's mainly brewed under license trash so this comes under the hammer too as it's now ABInBev. Must admit though they have nailed it really for the mixture of a Helles and Pils. I love Helles style and you get that for sure and it doesn't come at stupid prices you're paying a bottle shop for German imports.

@cehaem2 warsteiner is as near a commercial lager as it gets in germany . As for augustiner etc. Things are quite regional in Germany .. it's only recently that it's become widely available in Northern Germany , Berlin etc ... I saw it on sale in a supermarket in north Italy last week , and hb and ofc paulaner.. you can get these gerrman and bayern beers in the specialist beer shops in uk , albeit at 4 times the price they are in Germany and the regions they are made. Bottles of Augustiner helles are a fair bit cheaper in munich than berlin for example.
@cehaem2
26 күн бұрын
@@sisi2484 I mentioned Warsteiner in the context of having a distribution network vs being independently owned and operated. If you read my comment again you will notice that i mentioned exactly that in the last sentence. Compared to Warsteiner Augustiner is a dwarf. Augustiner has been available outside of Munich for over 20 years. I remember buying it from a local Getränkermarkt in Bochum in 2006. it started popping up in Berlin cornershops around 2000, just as the gentrification process was about to kick off. iIt gained popularity because it is an independent brewer. Pretty much each and every offie in the UK or Ireland does it now. Even my local offie (and I live in NI) used to sell Spaten and another ABK from Kaufbeuren. Don´t ask me how it got there. One of the Belfast pubs even did Engelbräu on tap some 10 years ago. I haven´t noticed a significant difference in Augustiner pricing between Bavaria and the rest of the country.

I like lost, but its their cheap go at breaking into the cheap lager market. I find it watery also, the others on this show are far superior beers.
I'm glad I watched this, I used to live and work in Germany and the Netherlands so I was spoiled by all the super quality beers and I won't touch the UK stuff, but Brewdog may be worth a try? I wouldn't normally touch anything liquid or food made with London tap water, having drunk some from the tap while working there (yikes! no wonder bottled water's so popular there), but you may have persuaded me to try a bottle.
Strange how regional variations change things so much, Hofbrau is very easy to pick up here in the NW and it's been a good 18 months or so now since you've been able to get Camden Helles for less than it. At the moment the Germans are winning on quality and value. Also we have Booth's supermarkets who stock an incredible selection of beer 😊
Camden Hells is brilliant especially when you consider the ABV, Lost I think is crap
Agree with everything you've said. I'm currently on Brewdog as its cheap in Sainsbury's, 15 cans for £12. But I prefer Camden and when thats on offer I buy that! I think that Hofbrau was in the Lidl Oktoberfest box last year, I am hoping Lidl do that again this year! Boycott the fake eurotrash like Madri and Cruzcampo thats full of Glucose Syrup!

@@Puffball-ll1ly Export has more alcohol and less hop than Pils. It tastes more malty and bready, while Pils has the typical hop bitterness. German Pils is usually between 4.8 to 4.9% ABV, Export usually Starts at 5.0% ABV. Also you can identify it by the name: If it's something like Spezial, Original, Gold or Landbier, then it's an Export. If it's Pils, then it has Pils in the name.
@cehaem2
25 күн бұрын
@@Puffball-ll1ly Export has slightly more alcohol, usually 5%-5.3% and is way more malty, almost sweeter and far less hoppy. Exports were once considered working-class beers, cheaper to brew and sell. Water around Dortmund is quite rich with Sulfate which doesn't go well with Pilsners. Pilsners became prevalent around the 60/70s when people could afford them on a regular basis. Bavarian Exports are slightly maltier than Dortmund-style.

Recently Brewdog had three x ten packs of 440ml Lost larger for £21 in Morrisons. I went back time and again until I had accumalated 12 packs. It has a slight Germanic taste to it, its not bitter and is refreshing with a nice flavour. Its probably not fair to say its the best of a bad bunch but I find it satisfying and price was the deciding factor for me. I don’t think British larger can compete on taste, its just a matter of how low do you want to go or how much can you afford to pay to get reasonble beer?

I've enjoyed your beer reviews since 2010. I recently found out that Greg Puckett of Greg's Beer Reviews passed away. I'm bummed about this, I also started watching Greg's videos in 2010.
I do like Camden Hells, certainly can never be accused of being sweet! On the contrary, sometimes I find it a bit salty - probably depends what I've eaten or drunk before pouring and drinking it. I do love the branding and the logo - brilliant logo, it says London with the circle, it says a Brewery tower with the middle bottle like shape and the typeface and name is smart as ... all hell. 😉 Lost Lager - enjoy it too - much sweeter than Hells, for sure. It can be had for quite cheap, but probably overrated in my humble opinion. Never been a big fan of hoppiness of Pils Lager, I also find it far too carbonated for my taste and too bitter - Krombacher is one of those. However, I've had Austrian Pils served in a bar where the publican had a fridge set to an exact temperature and it was bloody lovely. Maybe I need to give Krombacher another try - and concentrate on getting the temperature of the beer spot on. Great video by the way.
I really like the Camden Lager personally, although it is bitter like you say, I find Brewdog to be headache material (glucose??)
Now we can brew good lager in UK Hells will have their lager made by Carlsberg in nothampton,increase the price and reduce the aBV
Appreciate the review and I've yet to try Krombacher myself, but if it's close, surely the fact that the Camden is 660ml vs the Krombacher's 500ml should come into play for your £2.50.
