Have to disagree, AB inbevs approach to Camden is to move brewing to Wales, Brew at high gravity, switch to Hop extract and most importantly they now pasteurize the beer which was the whole point of the original beer!

Just got back from Germany where I had my mind blown by the beer! (didn’t know the football was on cos I don’t follow it 🤦🏻‍♂️) I think Gilde pilsner from Hannover was my favourite. It was a real eye opener for me regarding beer and the German attitude to beer. What an amazing place. Can’t wait to go back!

Yes Simon! This is the type of content we want. Just to point out though that when you start to take price into account you can almost always buy 2 x 10 multipacks of Lost Lager at Morrisons for £17. That then makes it the equivalent of 96p for 500ml. Totally changes the equation if you are happy to buy in bulk.

I live 600m away from the Höfbrau brewery, great beer but the locals have only 1 choice Augstiner. Höfbrau hardly comes on offer, also it's a government owned brewery, but they still do brewery tours (abeit the shop being closed 😞). Normally the bottle here is 1€ per bottle in a crate of 20.

Krombacher by the way not considered good at all ,can get 20 x 500 ml bottles in a crate from Rewe supermarkets at times for €14 !!! In lockdown i was over there ,i must have tried over 200 types of lagers and pilsners 😂! All between 75c to 1,05c . Then u get 8c back for the bottles

Somebody finally talking sense! I live in Siegen as a Brit. The beers in Germany are ok, but the saying ‘you don’t know what you’re missing until it’s gone’ comes to mind. There are some absolutely barnstorming British beers. All of my German beer enthusiast close friends love the British beers and brew their own stouts, ales for years. The casual drinkers in Germany are very insulated and only drink German beers and have a bit of a superiority complex, so that is one thing I find much more sympathisch with British drinkers. Both countries make great beers, but Krombacher isn’t one of them!

Agreed. When I lived in Germany there were so many beers, all delicious. There were (and still are I suppose), 'alt biers' (old beers), which are darker and much more like our light or pale ale which are equally delicious but not really like pils. I particularly looked forward to visiting Dusseldorf and drinking Dussel alt. I'm surprised the German supermarkets don't try it over here but maybe it doesn't travel? I only ever saw it on draft not bottles so who knows?

Technically the Camden Hells is a mixture of a Helles and a Pilsner. Really underrated beer. Tends to get looked down on these days because it’s popular. Weirdly, I’ve found that if you drink it out of a 330 bottle you get much flavour from the German hops whereas in the glass it’s a more rounded beer.

Yes I agree, people hate on British lager as it's mainly brewed under license trash so this comes under the hammer too as it's now ABInBev. Must admit though they have nailed it really for the mixture of a Helles and Pils. I love Helles style and you get that for sure and it doesn't come at stupid prices you're paying a bottle shop for German imports.

@cehaem2 warsteiner is as near a commercial lager as it gets in germany . As for augustiner etc. Things are quite regional in Germany .. it's only recently that it's become widely available in Northern Germany , Berlin etc ... I saw it on sale in a supermarket in north Italy last week , and hb and ofc paulaner.. you can get these gerrman and bayern beers in the specialist beer shops in uk , albeit at 4 times the price they are in Germany and the regions they are made. Bottles of Augustiner helles are a fair bit cheaper in munich than berlin for example.

@@sisi2484 I mentioned Warsteiner in the context of having a distribution network vs being independently owned and operated. If you read my comment again you will notice that i mentioned exactly that in the last sentence. Compared to Warsteiner Augustiner is a dwarf. Augustiner has been available outside of Munich for over 20 years. I remember buying it from a local Getränkermarkt in Bochum in 2006. it started popping up in Berlin cornershops around 2000, just as the gentrification process was about to kick off. iIt gained popularity because it is an independent brewer. Pretty much each and every offie in the UK or Ireland does it now. Even my local offie (and I live in NI) used to sell Spaten and another ABK from Kaufbeuren. Don´t ask me how it got there. One of the Belfast pubs even did Engelbräu on tap some 10 years ago. I haven´t noticed a significant difference in Augustiner pricing between Bavaria and the rest of the country.

It has a slight Germanic taste to it, its not bitter and is refreshing with a nice flavour. Its probably not fair to say its the best of a bad bunch but I find it satisfying and price was the deciding factor for me. I do like Camden Hells, certainly can never be accused of being sweet! On the contrary, sometimes I find it a bit salty - probably depends what I've eaten or drunk before pouring and drinking it. I do love the branding and the logo - brilliant logo, it says London with the circle, it says a Brewery tower with the middle bottle like shape and the typeface and name is smart as ... all hell. 😉 Lost Lager - enjoy it too - much sweeter than Hells, for sure. It can be had for quite cheap, but probably overrated in my humble opinion. Never been a big fan of hoppiness of Pils Lager, I also find it far too carbonated for my taste and too bitter - Krombacher is one of those. However, I've had Austrian Pils served in a bar where the publican had a fridge set to an exact temperature and it was bloody lovely. Maybe I need to give Krombacher another try - and concentrate on getting the temperature of the beer spot on. Great video by the way.

Appreciate the review and I've yet to try Krombacher myself, but if it's close, surely the fact that the Camden is 660ml vs the Krombacher's 500ml should come into play for your £2.50.

just learned a lot about which and why lagers I like.. seems I'm mostly a pilsner man am deffo not a new-world lager(?!?) fan as it reminds me of early-teen parties where you try and invent a version of snakebite by mixing leftover cans at the end of the night.. lager and bitter do not mix too well.. Q: How does Camden Town Hells Lager compare/contrast with Paulaner Munich Hell Lager

I quite like a Lost now and then. It is a bit lighter and more rounded, but miles better that Carling and other British brewed 'lagers'. But answer me this - why when you criticise the 'earthy' smell of Burton brewed lagers because of the hard water, do you rate Cambden so highly when they must also have hard water? Or do they treat there water somehow?
