Can BREASTMILK upset your baby's SKIN? (Could there be an ALLERGY?)

Have you noticed that your bub's skin is starting to look a little ... angry?
Bit of a rash on their cheeks?
Maybe some cradle cap going on?
What could be causing this?
Well, there is actually a chance that it may be the result of an ALLERGY.
In the last 15 years or so, researchers have become more aware that things that go into mum's mouth can reach bub via breastmilk, and if bub has a little sensitivity to that substance, they may start showing signs of allergy in the form of eczema, dryness or a rash on their cheeks, body or scalp.
This can be quite distressing for parents as it can look quite unpleasant, and it can be quite unpleasant for bub as it can be irritating or itchy!
In fact, some research has indicated that unsettled babies with allergy indicators can have improvements in their behaviour after removing that offending substance!
Now full disclaimer here; if you are breastfeeding, making dramatic change to your diet is best done with the support of your health professional. Trials of food elimination are generally safe to do for a short period, but you need to make sure that you are still getting adequate nutrition.
Essentially, if you suspect a bit of a food sensitivity, be sure to discuss this with your Child Health Nurse or Health Professional first!

Hi Dr. Christian, my baby has been having a rashes All over his body and cheeks and chin. We have a lab test it was a result of the allergy to egg white (11) and every mild for wheat and soy (0.14). I stopped eating egg and seem to get better. And now his skin to be flared up again. I only consume a very small amount of soy sauce and i totally stop wheat and eggs. His skin seems to be worse. I don’t know what to do now should I start switching to formula? I am really stressful my baby has been fussy than normal. And he’s only nap for 30mins per time. He will be 6 month old next week. Please advise. Thank you

Hi there Kate, and thanks for reaching out. One thing that can happen with allergies is if you stop for a little bit and then re-introduce, it can cause a flaring of that response. Which formula are you on? Are you taking any other supplements like Vitamin D or a probiotic?

  • @AskDrChristian

    @AskDrChristian

    2 жыл бұрын

Hi there, Are you bottle feeding? If you are bottle feeding and you're concerned that the milk may be burning be sure to check the temperature of the milk prior to a feed as it can get quite hot! If you are breast feeding, its not the temperature of the milk causing a burn, it may be the content of the milk causing an aggravation. In cases of allergy, when you contact/ingest the substance you are sensitive to it causes an increased inflammatory and immune response, and this may look like redness on the cheeks, chin and chest. I often describe it as "looking angry". If you would like, you can send a picture through to askdrchristian@gmail.com and I can have a look for you. Thanks for the question, Christian

Hi there Tshegofatso, Some responses could last for a short time, and some could cause swelling of the eyes, but so can other conditions. I'd be considering something in your milk or even a contact response with the bedsheet/clothes (some detergents can set off responses like this), but then I'd also be wanting to make sure kidneys are fine for instance, and that may mean a visit to your health professional for a proper assessment :) Hope that helps, Christian

Hi Lydisdajoyce - and thank you for reaching out. At 8 weeks old, this might be a normal rash that can occur in some babies as a result of hormonal changes. Typically starts at the cheeks before progressing down to the top of the chest and eventually disappearing. If it continues, or starts spreading further, then I would consider a reaction of sorts could be occurring.

Hi Nina, There are a lot of reasons to why your baby may have a rash, and one of them could be due to what they are eating. Are they breastfed or formula fed? Which brand? If breastfeed - what is your diet like? And then we have the non-dietary options - could it just be a regular hormonal rash, could it be a reaction to washing powders, could they have contacted something, have they recently had a virus or sickness.... Lots of options! Best thing to do is if you are concerned, consult a health professional so they can have a proper look. Christian

Yes, you can get a rash on the cheek from teething, and the cream that is usually used for ringworm is a hydrocortisone cream which should have helped. Has she popped her tooth out yet? We have a Dr's appointment coming up but I decided to rub breastmilk all over her tonight and see if it will help since they say it's anti bacterial.. Hi again Kadija, Any chance that she may be teething at the moment? At 4 months old I often see teeth start to come through, and with that comes a lot of dribble/drool which can irritate and come up as a bit of a rash. Might also have a bit of redness around the backside at the same time too. Good to see you have a follow up about it, and while it may be something as simple as this, it is wise to seek that medical review just in case. Christian

This really depends on what is going on. For most that I see, removal of the offending substance from mum and bub's diet is the first step. If you've found the right one, skin clears up pretty quick. From this point you can trial a little bit after a month and see if it gets worse again, and this would confirm that substance. Because there might be more than one thing involved, and because you are changing diets around, it's a good idea to discuss this with your health professional prior to making big changes!

Hi there Zara, and thank you for reaching out. At 28 days, this could be a hormonal response, in which case it will clear up on its own in a couple of weeks. Monitor for other little things that may suggest allergy instead; cradle cap developing, straining with bowel movements or even mucous present in the poop may be indicators of an allergic response which would prompt further discussion with a health care professional about minimising/removing this from your diet. Thanks! Christian
