I felt Adishankar is like the 3rd monk who stood on the wall and told the world.. why else he would have gone all round convincing the karma kandi to go beyond karma.. and again revived all the temples n rituals to be followed till one reaches the state thru purity of mind to understand the advaitic knowledge.. why else he would painstakingly given all the bhashyas, the bhakti songs.. ofcourse to help the suffering lot..

The first goal is to have purity of mind/heart OR antahkaranshuddi. Without antahkaranshuddhi nothing will work whether it's yoga, Vedanta, shankhya, mimansa, nyaya, vaisheshika etc.

The only way to attain moksha is to experience the Brahman possible only by purity in life and single minded meditation the sentient bound by goes through karma and many suffering in the cycle of birth and rebirth

Agreed that it is possible to be immanent and Transcendent. A dreamer and the dream can be non dual. But how is possible for a dreamer to be nirguna if it is dreaming? If Brahmana and Maya are one then how is it possible that Brahman is nirguna? And if Brahman is NOT nirguna then THAT raises many ontological questions. For one, how can gunas come into being without there being a Creator? So is there a Creator of a Creator?

Gunas come to oneself due to ignorance of self. Karmas set the play and make you to act. But if you realise you are acting, Gunas will not affect you. Advaita is beyond all these.

The dream is a function of the dreamer's unconscious, which is but an aspect (be it powerful) of the totality of self of the dreamer. Often in these discussion the subtle realms are left out. They are not subject to Maya but as projections of Brahman, they seem to have purposefulness and function in a higher order aspect of the dream. So perhaps this is all step down or like a prism that appears to divide light. There is only one thing, it pervades and maintains everything. There is purpose and function. The movie comes from one light source yet appears as many. There is a director and creators of the movie. The actors, scenery and narrative follow a script. How this relates to the Nirguna vs Saguna I don't know but it seems relevant, and since there is no observer in the Nirguna,, does anyone? Yet here we are functioning as some aspect of the Brahman, even if our recognition of who we are as that is faulty. The truth of our existence cannot be changed from what it is.

@@kenkaplan3654 The truth of our existence nullifies the philosophy of Advaita that Brahman is nirguna. A Nirguna Brahman cannot create. A saguna Brahman can create but then it cannot be unlimited, omnipresent and omnipotent. It is only if Brahman is both nirguna and Saguna that it can create also and is omnipresent and omnipotent also. However, it beats me how it can be both. The dream and dreamer logic is unconvincing. The dreamer cannot dream if it is nirguna.

@@vs9324 This to me is the human intellect trying to comprehend the unfathomable. The dream-dreamer analogy is just a human construct to try and explain something but is not the thing itself. If Brahman is both Nirguna and Saguna as one singularity, then I have no problem that within the formless all infinite potentialities exist. As a potentiality begins to form as a creative expression, the Saguna brings it into manifestation. It's like my mind wants to lift a cup so my arm does it through neural impulse, but the body-brain-mind are one. We think in terms of locality (Nirguna is here, ,Saguna is there) but that is a space-time illusion.) Becase Nirguna is limitless formlessness does not mean it is inert or passive. Kabir put it like this "When He Himself reveals Himself, Brahma brings into manifestation That which can never be seen. As the seed is in the plant, as the shade is in the tree, as the void is in the sky, as infinite forms are in the void-- So from beyond the Infinite, the Infinite comes; and from the Infinite the finite extends. The creature is in Brahma, and Brahma is in the creature: they are ever distinct, yet ever united. He Himself is the tree, the seed, and the germ. He Himself is the flower, the fruit, and the shade. He Himself is the sun, the light, and the lighted. He Himself is Brahma, creature, and Maya. He Himself is the manifold form, the infinite space; He is the breath, the word, and the meaning. He Himself is the limit and the limitless: and beyond both the limited and the limitless is He, the Pure Being. He is the Immanent Mind in Brahma and in the creature. The Supreme Soul is seen within the soul, The Point is seen within the Supreme Soul, And within the Point, the reflection is seen again. Kabîr is blest because he has this supreme vision!"

​@@kenkaplan3654Well explained. The purpose of the analogy is limited to illustrating an aspect; it is not presented for exhaustive comparison and analysis. I also think Brahman comprises and subsumes all; unity and multiplicity Nirguna and Saguna, Nirakara and Sakara.

@@suhaska5529 the ‘unfortunate’ remark is made because of the intent of the person who asked this question. As I said, the question has been copied word-by-word from Ayon Maharaj’s book ‘Infinite paths to Infinite reality’ wherein the author not only raises this question but also elaborately answers it drawing examples of Sri Ramakrishna’s teachings. Therefore, to use that very question to another erudite monk of the same order who also happens to be Ayon Maharaj’s teacher during his training years at Belur Math shows disrespect towards both and exposes the questioners intent to pose himself as a very erudite thinker in spiritual matters. Honesty to yourself and then to others is first step in spiritual life.

There is a problem here with the dream analogy. A dream is not a random occurrence. It is a purposeful, detailed, precise communication from the unconscious that seeks to heal, reveal, and lead to wholeness. In this regard the unconscious creates the structure of the dream and purposely arranges the symbols and narrative. So from the point of view of the entire individual self, an aspect of that self creates an *appearance* of reality that has operational function, even if that appearance is ephemeral, transitory and only one aspect of the entirety of self. I don't have the answer to this but it seems to me this more expanded analogy might be apt. This Universe of form might not be "real" in that Brahman is indivisible, but it can take on appearance of divisibility through Maya. Although never truly "real", it is purposeful, just as the dream is purposeful. As above so below. Yogananda said the Universe was kind of like God's hobby, Lila, creative sport. Even if none of it is "real", it still has purpose, just as we like to see movies, which give us pleasure, even though they too are just "appearances".

Infact, this is other way around. Dream tells you that your life is like a railway platform watching trains. Yes. All these purposes you defined make you to lead a dharmic life without creating new vasanas and suffering, you justify in total the purpose of creation.

@@sundarnarayanan3511 I have been a specialist in dreams for over 25 years. Dreams are an active, purposeful interjection or expression of the unconscious into the body matrix of the individual self. It is not passive just watching. It is communication from self to self. The universe (or any other universe) can be both inherently unreal yet purposeful at the same time. The better analogy which Yogananda liked is movie, rather than dream because most people do not understand the rules and construction of dreams. He said creation was God's hobby. The Sanskrit term is Lila.

It is dream, illusion, but a very powerful illusion. Like farmers using the illusion of scarecrow to shoo away the birds. The most powerful illusion is ego. I need to be reminded again and again, to be familiar with this brahman, buddha nature, and swamiji's talk is literally helpful, thank you. 🙏

Fact check for Mayavadins lost in semantics: We are born out of this world and we merge back into this world, after death. Our concept of the world might be limited and illusory. But the world itself is real, infinite, eternal, and not illusory. Mayavadins rejecting the world as illusory, is as ridiculous as a bubble of the ocean claiming that the ocean is not real.
