Can Alperen Şengün Be The Next Jokic?

Alperen Şengün is the youngest center in the NBA to ever get a triple double, and last night versus the Lakers, became the youngest center ever to get at least 30 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists in a game. Coach Nick breaks down his incredible passing ability, which rivals the 2 time MVP Nikola Jokic, and explains why there are some intangibles that could ultimately make this 20 year old Turkish center into a more impactful player than Jokic himself.

    This comparison is awful. Jokic is 45lbs heavier and can back down the strongest centers in the league. Jokic himself said he likes to be heavier so he can back down centers. Your videos has sengun running down much faster for dunks 😂 something jokic hardly does. And running in circles in the paint since he cant post and relies on floaters and hook shots or spins. Sengun “must” rely on passes and play outside 😂 That in itself creates so much options and dynamic for jokic. Hence completely different players. Smh

    he's definitely shorter than jokic, who is 6'11. 6'9 sounds about right. Also he's already a better passer and overall playmaker than sabonis. He's approaching the realm of jokic-tier passing. But I think what will hold him back from scoring like jokic (at the same volume and efficiency) is that he is a little undersized. He could potentially make up for that with his better athleticism (going for more dunks than layups) but it'll be interesting to see.

Not to mention that he'll grow taller in years to come and get some valuable experience. He doesn't have to become big and strong because he's already inteligent and skilled enough to score on big guys, and will be able to guard the rim by using footwork and strenght he already has. As an OKC fan we literally had this guy. He could have been ours 😭 and when you look at what we’re building, we have a lot of players with size who know how to pass the ball, it’s kind of baffling how we let this guy go. Especially since we’ve invested a lot in foreign players so we clearly don’t subscribe to that notion that oversees players won’t be good in the NBA. At the very least the value in the guy at the 16th pick should have been enough even if you don’t see him in your teams future. Like he’s a year and a half in and would probably go for a decent haul if they wanted to trade him today.

Especially because when I look at our team as a whole and what we’re trying to build, the one thing that’s missing is we need a big who can dominate in the post. Chet and Poku are finesse bigs. I can’t see them ever being a physical presence in the paint. And this guy legit looks like he’s going to be one of the best post up players of his generation. And he has great court IQ and can pass so he’s what we need and also will just fit right in with that we’re doing 🙃

  • @USabah309

    @USabah309

    We got what we needed with Chet - a defensive minded big who can space the floor and produce his own offense. Sengun requires the ball in his hands for his skills to be maximized, but I'd rather Shai and Giddey produce the offense. Coach Nick didn't mention anything about Sengun's defense either. He's 6'9 and slow moving laterally, so he has a lot of trouble guarding faster players as he can't oversize them with length or outrun them with speed. This will be something to keep an eye on, since once the rockets start winning games, teams will gameplan and target Sengun, as he already has issues with fouling out. I'm not trying to take anything away from him, his offensive skillset is elite, but there was a lot of logic behind the trade, especially since we got Ousmane Dieng out of it, (an elite defensive wing with a promising offensive skillset).

  • @SonnyK248

    @SonnyK248

    @@USabah309 I don’t think we would have missed out on Dieng regardless. We have enough picks to trade up. Also this guy doesn’t have to be a starter. At the 16th pick a solid role-bench guy is valuable enough. Like Tre Mann and Poku will probably never become starters long term but they had enough value in the picks they were taken at. Also in my opinion for the faults you listed his presence in the paint will make him an asset. Give him the ball in the paint and he has the post moves to get to the rim or he can find a teammate with his vision and passing. I don’t see that skill set in any of the guys we have right now. We don’t have to run the offence through him just use him against teams who protect the rim well. Basically I can see this guy as an all star one day and then we’ll really look dumb. Because fit or not he’s a quality player. Also the team we’re building is being compared to the 86 Celtics for its size, length and passing ability. This guy is basically McHale 2.0 in the paint 😂

    Rockets young talent is awesome. I have all of their games recorded on my DVR and i've seen a lot of their home games in person. I don't even care about our losing record because if you notice the first 20 games of this season to now, you will notice a difference in Sengun's confidence and game. If we can hang onto some of these young talents we can make it far in a couple years. I hope we can develops these guys nicely. HTINE HOLEEE IT DINEEE 🤘🚀

    @@runbho710 honestly he would be a very nice 6th man in a Crawford/Lou Williams type player who just scores off the bench like Eric Gordon during his 6th man award winning season. He doesn’t belong at PG he’s a good pure scorer though just the way we use him makes him not efficient

    this guy takes any opportunity to slight jokic. could be a better passer than one of the best passers of all time regardless of position? his passing is almost as good as jokic now??? jokic is also a great scorer and just decision maker in general, his vision is all time great, jokic has made history in so many ways already, he's spectacular in the clutch, what he brings to the game cant be explained in a few sentences, sengun will be a good player, maybe hell even become a great one. but its like saying jordan poole could be better than steph, stop it. this channel was much better before you started putting crazy things in the thumbnail to get views. just because a player is more athletic doesnt make them a likely better player, who won that game between the rockets and nuggets?

    Has the potential. The question is whether Rockets would develop him properly. Take a look at Wiggins. Imagine if he didn't spend all those years in Minnesota and was in a good franchise that develops players well. Imagine if he was with GSW from the start. Being in the wrong franchise in certain points in their career can stymie development and stop players from reaching full potential.

    Thank you Coach Nick for the great analysis! As a Rockets fan, when Alperen was halfway through his rookie season, everyone understood that the offense should run through him (like Jokic and Edwards said earlier in this season). Unfortunately, the head coach, Silas, had to spend a season and a half with Sengun to only realize this. I don't know if he can surpass Jokic but he will definitely one day carry his team forward with statistics close to Jokic. (By the way, he definitely looks taller than 6'9". NBA's official page says Alpy is 6'11")

    He absolutely proved me wrong, and I'm so glad he did. Before the draft I thought he was comparable to Okafor which failed even though he's the third pick, because of the lack of shooting and defense. Sengun lacks that (better than Okafor but still below average) as well but he shows that with good basketball IQ, you can do anything
