Can a “Tramp Bike” really teach you MTB tricks?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

When I was 15, I modified an old BMX bike for use on a trampoline. We called these trampoline bikes, or “tramp bikes".
Today, we'll build a tramp bike of our own, and attempt to bust some tricks on it.

It's amazing how Seth continues to be so creative and consistent. I can't think of anyone else in the MTB genre with more original content, and it's very beginner/intermediate friendly unlike most other channels. And most of them just do POV which Seth has never relied on. Such a terrific storyteller!

I want to add some tips of mine: The biggest two factors are from my experience: The weight of the bike and the quality of the trampoline(how good it sends you in the air, and a big saftey thing is having a net. I crashed in the net many times). I would pick up a used BMX for cheap, but pay attention, that its not as heavy as a semi truck... Also if you want to have the feeling of pedals, you can take the pegs of a BMX, put a threaded bar through them and put that through your bottom bracket and put some nuts on the threaded bar with some washers and now you can stand on it. But also wrap the pegs in something soft, so you can a) better stand on it and b) to protect the trampoline. Its complicated to describe and if you dont put enough thinking into it, it might break some stuff, but for me it worked.

Best dip for those wanting to do this at home is go to a swimming pool shop and use a pool cover over the frame, its basically a super heavy-duty, thick and hard-wearing bubble wrap. the frame won't pierce through it and it won't hurt if it wacks into you

When I made my trampoline bike I cut tennis balls in half and duct taped them over the ends of the fork and the rear dropouts. It’s able to take a lot more abuse than just pool noodles. It was cool to see you make one of these! 🤟

Learnt a lot of trick on a tramp bike. The took them to flyout, then box jump then to dirt, no foam pits around when I rode BMX! Even when I got back into BMX and MTB, still made a teamp bike (I was over 30 by this stage) and still kept the same progression, except threw in a foam pit before fly outs. Now in my 40s, I need my grandson to grow up a bit so Pop can "buy him a trampoline" just like Seth did for his daughter haha

Tramp bikes help with aerial awareness on flips. Doing a flip on a tramp without one is easy enough, but once you’ve put a tramp bike between your legs you’ve gotta use the correct form to get it around. A great learning tool. Awesome video Seth!

Small note on the technicality of switch being harder, at least in the professional skiing world, it’s not usually that judges remember which way is everyone’s natural direction of spin, (although they will have that in their notes usually) it’s that you get points for doing tricks in both directions. On skis that might be if you spin clockwise off the first jump, they want to see you spin counter clockwise off the second.

Dude same here in a bounce house. I can barely jump on a trampoline anymore either. Luckily riding a bike feels pretty good.

Foam?! What a game changer, we just used t-shirts and duct tape back in the day. Might build another one for the summer, it was so much fun

Funny stuff. Wish I had thought of that when I was younger. How many of those tricks do you still take to dirt?

Really contemplating Seth's comment about Growing up with a trampoline in the 90s... It was wild in hindsight 🤣. I don't know how we made it out alive. Boomer parents drinking cheap beer watching us try to catapult each other into the stratosphere with no net or spring cover. Kids getting hurt and parents laughing calling us a wussy or worse words I can't say here 🤣.

We had a trampoline that we used to bounce kids off of a cliffside and into a lake. I wish I were joking. We also had a rope swing run where you would swing off the rope, hit the trampoline at just the right angle and then fly into the lake. That one being more hazardous to your health, we only tested it when the parents weren't watching or when there was a know it all new kid that no one liked. (Not proud of it but that also happened.) On the plus side if they weren't a crybaby about it (whether they made the jump or ended up sliding down the cliff and getting a wicked case of road rash.) they earned respect from all the other kids. I know the smart thing would have been to play nice or tell the kid off for being a smart aleck and leaving it at that but this is hindsight talking.

We used to drag ours to the neighbors and put it by the pool and drag Thiers to the other side of the pool and try to jump over the pool or launch kids into it 🤣. Unlawful times indeed.

Honestly. This would help me with the overall fear of not sticking a landing a little more than just going for the full run. I'm all for doing dangerous things safely. lol

I like leaving the cranks and pedals on, but taking the chainring and pedal pins off. Makes it a little more realistic.
