Can A Lightweight eMTB Keep Up With A Full Power eBike?
Спорт
Steve Jones and Anna compare the 'shorter range' Whyte E-Lyte with a lighter rider and the Full Fat e-160 with a heavier rider. They want to find out how rider weight impacts eBike performance in terms of range, power, and climbing ability. Anna and Steve hope to find out if you should choose power output based on your weight, similar to selecting frame size based on height when buying an eBike.

Well I started off liking the lighter weight, but by the end I was leaning towards the full power 😜
Great video! I not only enjoyed the banter, but since my husband has a Giant Stance E and I have a Trek Fuel exe, it ticked all the boxes about our cycling reality. Anna confirmed everything I have noticed - the climbs, the cadence, and feeling the weight of the full power bike was too much! However, I know I’m on the right bike for me. Thanks Anna😊
ride Orbea Rise for a year,the perfect bike for me,before had for 3years full fat,26 kg for 67kg rider weight is wrong, greetings from sunny Algarve
Great video, guys, and it was fun to watch. I'm on a full power Transition Repeater 29er. The bike Weight is around 50 pounds, and I think I weigh around 160 pounds. It's a perfect fit for me, and I love it. I have no problem throwing it around. Speaking of throwing it around, it is now fully charged, and it's now time to hit the trails🤘🏿
Fun episode guy's I may in the summer purchase a lightweight bike for the experience between the two styles of riding
I really enjoyed this. More adventures with Anna and Steve please.

Anna just needs an emtb with lower standover like a Liv Intrigue X Adavanced E+ Elite. Sweet mullet build, comes in small and XS, capable of a full 85nm and it's under 19kg.

Except that's not made by Whyte, so doesn't fit the product placement criteria 😏
Giant E trance elite is my favorite for a balance of full power and light weight. I'm not sure why the bike is still not as popular as it should be. The entry-level bike is a great deal compared to other brands in the same range.
Brilliant show Anne & Steve, more of this please, love it

Good comparison, rider weight is probably one of the key factors deciding which embt to get. 👍
I ride a Trek EXe under 20kg and has 50 NM motor. I weigh 95kg. When I ride with other riders who have full power ebike, I can't keep up with them nor my range is comparable. So riders weight is a huge factor for this test.

thank you for this, i have been looking at the fuel exe and the rails currently, and i'm over 105kgs, so the idea of the fuel intrigued me, but i think i will opt for the rail or something more full power if i can get something a little lighter as in closer to the 20kg mark.

Where are these trails? They look super fun. Great video keep them coming :)
I use a Fazua 50 sistem on a light ebike (Lapierre eZesty) and the effort is higher of course. Uphill you fell it a little bit less powerfull, on flat you dont notice and downhill its a pleasure use it. Finally that made you be fit like a normal bike

Great video. Anna is awesome. Have her back!
It's all relative to what you are riding, you featured my Nduro 8 in the bike vault last week, it is an absolute weapon for steep rooty technical descents but i'm 96kg and the bike is 27.
Noticed silver spokes on the ebikes 😮 very retro 👌
I want to see this same exact route done with a normal MTB vs E lite and a full fat. That's the "real" comparison
Im 93Kgs but would still prefer the SL. I dont mind grafting or maintaining high cadence, just looking for a bit more speed/assistance on the ups so I can loop round a few more times without being shattered dragging DH tyres about the place. I'd be fine on an XC bike, but that would be pointless for the downs.
With a simple app connection between the bikes, it could be arranged and provided/made, that they sink their power outage, in such and which way they can perform parallelly.
I love my bh rebel 2017 its old but perfectly increases my natural riding style, too heavy to jump tho. Would love to try a lighter bike for jumps.
Nice one guys. Interestingly, during my Christmas 2023 ride, I had trouble keeping up with my analogue brethren on my Cube Stereo. Over 25kph, forget it😢

Meep Meep! Wooooosh! - Annas Cadence looks like the Road Runner :)
I have noticed that people who rode downhill in the early to mid 2000s up to 2012 or so are ok with heavier e bikes! Use to throwing around the weight! Same with people that I know that ride or ridden moto the weight is not an issue
At 6’4” and 220lbs when fully kitted, I’m guessing I should just get a full power bike without even thinking about the mid assist option. I don’t want to “feel like a passenger” like she mentioned. And I love to descend fast. But I guess my weight and height will manage that?
Chrome spokes are horrific, just sayin'
@embn

But.. shiny! 👀
I think I feel a resonance with something said for my trail bike bs all ebikes I've tried.. I feel like a passenger even more so on full fat ones.
I think I’d go full fat cause it’s the technical climbing would be what I’d digg
Relatively flat, switch backing, rooty, rocky with punchy climbs and short but steep descents. Proper old school MTB. I find it interesting how these old school trails are really where an EMTB can shine the brightest. Yet some cross country MTB bike vs a full power, long travel EMTB couldn't be further apart, as well as the riders who choose one or the other to ride. 2 completely different bikes and riders, yet same trail systems to participate in 2 completely different experiences.
On all videos can we always state where you are riding it will let people know new places to try which they might not be aware of ! 👍
What happens when you run out of juice? I would rather keep pedaling the sub 20kg bike. Even better a sub 17kg bike. Never mind if you have to get off and push it uphill. Great video with lots of fun.
I can see how having to have a high cadence to make power, would be a buzz kill on technical climbs, who wants to have to be spinning that high regularly?
@embn
4 ай бұрын
We can't imagine it helps with balance! But that is only to unlock the full assist, the SX motor still puts out a decent amount of power at a lower cadence, just not quite as much as the full fat 🤘
As a life long dirtbiker, and mt biker, a 53 lb full power EMTB bike works great for me. Im 170 lbs, the weight stabilizes the bike and keeps it going straight on thru what ever, and it also turns sharp really well.
@embn
4 ай бұрын
This can be great and helpful in some scenarios! 🤘 Some people have said that this makes them feel like a passenger on a full fat which could be a reason to choose a lighter bike?
@vashon100
2 ай бұрын
Which emtb do you have?
As battery and motor tech evolves and improves, it’s only a matter of time until full fat bikes will regularly be under 20kg
I started with a full fat Levo then swapped to a mid power Orbea Rise, and now after 2 years of the Rise I find that I ride alot with the motor off, as the lowest settings in Eco many times is still too much power. I only use the power on climbs
Silver spokes and nipple are a nice change they look wicked Steve. I don't think I would ever purchase an SL. I personally just don't see the point of the SL. To me, SL category doesn't need to exist or can almost be obtained with the right part choice and outlay. I feel full powered Ebike are at a very acceptable weight now and weights are coming down. I feel, Ebikes with multiple battery capacity options and owning different battery capacity coupled with tuning apps, flip chips are the way to go. I wish more bike companies would sell Eframe only . SL ebike are a bit like light beer, same price less punch.
Once Anna gets her eye in on that bike, she'll destroy Steve on pretty much any terrain...😅
Very Kool 👌🏻⚡️
It all depends on rider weight...being 120kg, the bike i have is ideal, Whyte E180SNX which is a heavy bike but feels agile to me.
@embn
4 ай бұрын
It's like Steve and Anna said it's all relative, if you're riding a 24kg bike that would be 20% of your weight whereas it would be 35% ish for Anna! The e180 ish a great rig 👌
Deja vu where's the armour vest at this time for her lol 😂
Tuning! That's what you aren't discussing here and makes that half fat bike so competitive EVERYWHERE! Keep your Eco the same to maximise range and cardio. Trail, pump up the power and torque a little, no more blowing at higher speeds. Then boost just crank it! Fill in that torque curve and you have a bike that can climb the steepest technicals climbs whilst still being light enough to manoeuvre. You can make your half fat feel more like the full cream variant, but you can't do it other way around, no masking that weight 😊
I have the Levo Alloy Comp and find that once you have had the feeling of full power you just can't go back. Lots of traction and control. After riding motor bikes it is a natural fit and the weight is nothing. Power is power.
Nice
I’m more interested in where this was filmed. Everytime I go out at this time of year I’m up to the eyes in crap 😂
I ha e the orbea rise and being smaller only weighing 60kg myself i went lightweight just felt more natural
Interesting video. Not sure how to read the results. That’s mostly because of me as an amateur not being familiar with some terminology and how some aspects relate to each other (the professional aspects). All I can conclude is that a full power bike may provide significantly more power. As for the video, I find the comparison a little flawed, in that we’re comparing a small 60kg female on a light e-bike with a big 95kg male on a full power bike. That just does not make for an objective comparison. From the video it appears the lady had much more stamina and seems more athletic, but the make has more strength in his legs. I also noticed the battery capacity is not that much different (650 vs 750), and the main difference send the torque the motor can provide (which does affect weight of the motor). I think the conclusion is clear enough though: the full power is a better choice allround, because the lady was always going full out and optimised her stamina strength and technique continuously, whereas the guy seemed to put in much less effort.
@jmo2752
4 ай бұрын
I'm not sure that was the point of video (ie. a simple comparison) - rather it was to show what kind of bike suits different size/weight/fitness riders, and how they can still ride together pretty equally? If you simply wanted to compare bikes, you'd need to use the same rider on the same route.
@baronvonrichthofen2021
4 ай бұрын
@@jmo2752 well, it dienstdoet that either really, as the conclusion was that she was going full out all the time, and he was not. She had to constantly ride at peak performance, and he did not, and when she got on the full fat, she no longer had to go full out and climbing was a lot easier. So if the intent is what you indicated, the full fat always wins, for all cases. In fairness, that’s a valid conclusion too though. :)
@jmo2752
4 ай бұрын
@@baronvonrichthofen2021 I agree - I'm not saying it was their intent to prove it, only the basis for the 'experiment', but like you say, ultimately a full-fat bike is likely to be the better option... The only proviso being that someone the size and weight of Anna felt a bit of a passenger on a heavier bike as she explained?
So Anna would benefit from higher torque in climbs which Steve does not necessary need, they still are on the right bikes both.
You can only go so fast on a trail so my guess is same…depends on the climbing
For the purpose of this discussion a full fat bike is over 1000w and a light weight is around 250w.
Nice Video in the Forest of Dean with a track for every type of ride. How do you match an e-bike to your power, weight, cadence and riding style? Ride a decent leisure centre bike machine, shove the data into an App! It will advise a full motor, trans, gear, and suss spec for you! Nice Real world project to do when boredom sets in.
