Can A Crypto Utopia Really Exist? | Cryptoland Roundtable
Ғылым және технология
From Liberland, to Puerto Rico, to El Salvador, people around the world are turning to the blockchain to create their own visions of crypto utopias. But what happens when crypto meets the real world, and can crypto utopias really exist? Should they?
In this Cryptoland roundtable, VICE News talk to Motherboard’s Edward Ongweso Jr, and Jillian Crandall of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to talk about what happens when crypto idealists cross paths with government.

What in the hell is that constant painfull noise and who tought it was a good idea to put it over people talking?
Anyone else picking up on astroturfing in these comments? Generic names with the same typos is a little suspect.
Jillian already does a great job of pointing this out (as an oligopoly), but further to that point, with the prospect of crypto-mining moving towards proof-of-stake (whereby the amount of a currency you currently have increases your chances of mining the next coin) for many coins (particularly the Etherium-based ones), is it not true that over time these currencies become increasingly centralized? Furthermore, since the governance of many of these coins (that is, the future developement of them) are often decided based on the influence of those who hold the largest portion of them. And now, the discussion around a literal, real-world, policial-power proportional to your wealth, how is that not simply a complete consolidation of power, both in the digital and physical world?

" is it not true that over time these currencies become increasingly centralized?" The funny irony of crypto is that it was designed to be a decentralized currency that no bank could manipulate it's value, and now everybody and their uncle can manipulate the value of any crypto coin just by spreading a few rumours. Today, some 15 years since crypto started to become a thing, nobody anywhere accepts it as a currency *because* the value is so unstable. The simple truth is that nobody trusts a decentralized system, because the only reason to decentralize it is that you want to get rid of oversight and oversight is what makes a product trustworthy. Even the blockchain has proven to be unreliable *because* the servers that they are hosted on have no oversight to make sure they are not hacked.
Why no show about people losing their life savings on crypto?

This is digital colonialism, a form of digital imperialism. The crypto cowboys benefit from the geopolitical and social relations that emerged from settler colonialism. Settler colonialism was not illegal but it was wrong. Crypto-colonialism may be legal but it is wrong. These libertarian experiments in poor countries where crypto cowboys are able to get access to cheap resources (due to coloniality) and one’s level of democratic agency is tied to their crypto holdings (similar to how enslaved black people as 3/5ths a person for the purpose of increasing slave masters’ voting power). This system Is literally digital colonialism masquerading as development and that’s being done with the complicity of the government. They are literally workshopping digital oligarchic systems in the global south to boomerang it back to global north some day in the future.
Ancaps would want you to believe it’s possible. But it isn’t.

you would leave it up to the government to decide? the state? you realize political rulers are not the good guys. Normal people don't desire to rule over others. Let the people decide!

@@freyawildesciencefictionau8156 There's plenty to go around, the idea of money is now absurd, and the idea of profit only leads to misery. Money should be abolished along with other contrived constructs we conjured up to keep ourselves from reaching our true potential.

No slight to the two but I feel like I'm watching two plumbers designing a house. They have some good points but the perspective has a current lean. Crypto is still in a an early stage and easy to imagine going in multiple directions.
Decentralized
Voluntaryism is the doctrine that relations among people should be by mutual consent, or not at all. It represents a means, an end, and an insight. Voluntaryism does not argue for the specific form that voluntary arrangements will take; only that force be abandoned so that individuals in society may flourish. As it is the means which determine the end, the goal of an all voluntary society must be sought voluntarily. People cannot be coerced into freedom. Hence, the use of the free market, education, persuasion, and non-violent resistance as the primary ways to change people’s ideas about the State. The voluntaryist insight, that all tyranny and government are grounded upon popular acceptance, explains why voluntary means are sufficient to attain that end.
