Camping The Wainwrights Coast To Coast in England | Embrace The Journey

The Wainwrights Coast to Coast path begins in St Bees in Cumbria, then runs across the country through the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks, ending in the coastal village of Robin Hoods Bay in North Yorkshire. It's a journey just shy of 200 miles.
Abbie set out to walk and wild camp the trail in June, completing it in just under 11 days through a searing summer heatwave that hit the UK. It made for scenic walking through mountains and forests, across fields and dales, and along moors and coastal cliffs. Along the way they courageously shares the challenge of managing their ongoing mental ill health whilst on the trail, openly revealing the highs and lows that made the walk more than just a hike across the country - it became a journey of discovery, healing and perspective. A walk, they say, will forever hold close to their heart.

Did this walk 8 years ago and have some wonderful memories of it and watching this ( the best walking video I’ve ever seen of the C to C) I’ve decided that , nearing 70, it’s time I got my boots out again for another challenge. Your journey has been an absolute pleasure to watch and enjoy. Thank you Phil

Abbie, just watched this as I'm planning my trip in May 2020. Saw you getting upset early in the trip and it's nothing strange or unique. I do a lot of solo wildcamping and often turn in to a blubbering mess when I'm in the wild. It's a place to think, contemplate, miss people, and generally let off steam. The views often make you feel like a spec of dust on this planet as they put things into perspective. Waves of panic often come from being alone in a big often inhospitable place. Just remember it's normal, good for you and in most cases (in the UK) you're never "that" far from civilisation. Your video also shows you were emotional on day 2 and the penultimate day. Thinking about the mammoth task ahead and then the mammoth achievement you'd made? Keep it up Abbie, your awesome.

Hi Abbie, What a wonderful video of this great walk. I completed the walk back in July this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it is admirable of you to be so honest with your viewers about mental health. Many suffer in silence! I camped right at the top of lining cragg and also Angle tarn in the lake district. I also got lost at Knott but soon got back on track! Another walk which you may or may not be aware of and one that I completed recently is the d'Arcy Dalton way. It runs from South Warwickshire and ends at Waylands Smithy on the Ridgeway. Passes through outstanding countryside, Hamlets, Villages and Churches. I really enjoyed it. It was created in memory of d'Arcy Dalton who was responsible for fighting for keeping rights of way, footpaths and bridleways open for the general public to enjoy. Sandy

Coast to Coast 2008 - 15 days. Physically and mentally exhausting. I had to 'wild-camp' a few nights and I didn't really appreciate any of it until I got home vowing to never do something like it again !! After a day's rest, I was itching to be back out there again. I would love to do it again someday and really take in the beauty of my surroundings rather than seeing them as an obstacle to the end of a journey.

48:30 I know how you feel sometimes with navigating, if I have to do a lot of brainwork to figure where I am and where I have to be, I can sometimes panick and then all of a sudden it gets 100% more difficult to work out where to go. I was told once though that "All paths lead somewhere" which is to say, even if you end up going the wrong way you'll eventually figure it out and be able to correct yourself, Like how you summited the wrong mountain coming out of the Lake District, I try to see those situations as opportunities to experience something new and unique to me. Really enjoy your videos and its nice to see that unlike others, you aren't afraid to talk about the challenges and reality of managing and dealing with mental health.

I don't think there's such a thing as 'mental health'. The mind is the problem. And peace comes when the mind is quiet. What troubles us is the incessant thinking and the busy imagination. Freedom is freedom from worry and being present. There is no such thing as 'peace of mind' because the mind is by nature turbulent. You love the outdoors because it helps to free you from all that mental bondage. There are moments of pushback but they pass and you get stronger. Well done Abbie.

LOVED THIS VIDEO!! I hiked the C2C solo three years ago for my 50th birthday. Watching this brought back so many incredible memories for me. I was watching with my iPhone in my hand scrolling through my pictures that I took on the trail as they synced up with your video. Every two minutes I was pausing the video and showing my iPhone to my wife saying, ‘Look! This is a pic taken at that exact spot!’ She really enjoyed your video too as she was able to see how spectacular and how much effort is put into hiking this trail. I really have no idea how you found the energy not only to make this video but to camp too! I stayed in B&B’s every night and I was so exhausted and sore that I basically collapsed into the bed. Well done on your amazing accomplishment of not only hiking this trail but documenting it so well! Your videos are really good! It’s hard to make these trekking videos interesting and engaging but you did a superb job!! Bravo.

Thank you soooo much for this. My partner and I walked the CtC in 2007. It was our first long distance walk. Such a joy to see all those views and places again. In the following years we went on to walk the West Highlands Way and the South Downs Way. Now for the really weird thing; two of the times when your demons bubbled to the surface were along the shore of Ennerdale Water and on your second last day. That path alone Ennerdale Water I found strange, almost creepy and I don't know why. To me the gnarled trees and moss covered rocks had a sinister feel to them. I also had a strange unsettling feeling walking into Hawsker on our last day. I think this was to do with it being our last day. For the previous 15 days the journey stretched out before us but tomorrow all this would be gone. These two negative experiences are minuscule compared with the delight, at times the almost heart stopping joy, of walking day after day though such beautiful landscape. Thank you again for this and for all your walking videos.

Wonderful journey and accomplishment, well done Abbie!!! Throughly enjoyed the views, the ups and the downs. Sometimes it's the little things that can lift our spirits; the flowers, a sudden burst of birdsong, a babbling brook, I've often found forgetfulness from the weariness of the world wuth such things.🌻🌷🌲🦋

I'd say people with mental health issues tend to achieve so so much more than us mere mortals, what ever that means, simply amazing. You're an inspiration....

I walked the C2C a number of years ago. It was the most magnificent trip. I am enjoying reliving again by watching your video.

Thank you Abbie for one of the best vlogs of the C2C. Very well presented. You come across as very authentic, with an attractive nature and hats of to your honesty. I started the C2C in 2013, but stopped in Kirkeby Stephen. I felt it was an anticlimax coming from the breathtaking Lake District and on to the moors, but you vlog has inspired me to retry, COVID permitting. I live abroad and there are a few logistical barriers I will have to conquer. Take care. Steen

Thanks great video. Tough watching you so upset I don't like using the word brave, because you got to deal with it, the way thats best for you . I did 30 years London police all the stress that came with that distraught victims bad accidents dead bodies etc I would go into autopilot deal with it hiding my thoughts behind my uniform . I had some councilling after 1 traumatic incident I dealt with didnt gel with the councillor was prescribed drugs , didn't get on with that either . Walking in the countryside and fells helped me I called it my sanctuary .seeing the beauty thats out there cleansed my soul from the dark side I saw in the police. Keep on doing this fantastic work. Peace P

Abbie, congratulations on finishing your walk. That was a lovely film and a much better way to spend a couple of hours than watching some film on the TV. I feel for you with the problems that you talked about and I hope that you carry on making these films for as long as it makes you happy and not feel under pressure to create such high quality films. Did the C2C aswell in 2018 and had exact the same experience with walking along Haweswater Resevoir. The heat had gotten to me and I probably got a bit dehydrated. I had hoped that there would be plenty of shade that part of the track but there wasn't. For me it was the most challenging stretch of the whole C2C, in particular mentally. Btw: Just found your channel yesterday, while I was browsing around youtube for films to help me distract my thoughts from the gout attack I'm experiencing atm. Already watched several films about trails I have done myself. I love them, and I love how you show the amazing as well as the hard parts of walking. Thank you for it.

I did this walk a month before you did and am doing it again in May 2021, for different reasons. Any long distance walking, especially on your own, has mental as well as physical challenges. It doesn't matter whether you are male or female. You get taken by your own thoughts. Any part of you not 100% will work through to your conscious thoughts at some point. Do NOT beat yourself up. As Abbie has done, walk through them, take comfort from each day you move on. Massive respect for Abbie, and anyone who does this. Stay safe.

A superb adventure, bringing back many many memories. You are an inspiration. Wonderful film and again great camera work.
