When I look back it's the hard camps that stick out in my memories. When you struggle to set up and then are warm and dry with a full belly while it's hammering down with rain outside. Those are the good times.

Just a comment regarding oatmeal. For over 60 years of my life I had an aversion to oatmeal. Probably tasted it when I was a kid and didn't like it or maybe just the way it looked. On a fishing trip with my fishing buddy, he brought all the groceries. Usually we would have bacon and eggs in the morning. He was making coffee and I was looking in the ice chest for the eggs and bacon. Couldn't find it. Asked him and he said, oh, I brought oatmeal. Well, it was cold that morning and I had to have something to eat so I tried the oatmeal. Well, duh, it was pretty good and I have liked oatmeal since then. Great video. Tough when it rains all night but is really nice in the morning. What a good place to be.

Not the instant stuff! Get some good oats and add a little figs, dates, or raisins etc. Milk and brown sugar or maple syrup!

    P. S. Oats are the most nutritious of the grains. The cultivation of oats into europe is what made the introduction of the horse posible, which transformed all aspects or society from economy to war.

isn't it funny how when its bad weather setting up,,or even selecting a campsight is mentally taxing, but when it's done it's the most rewarding and when you eventually get settled the calming state of mind you get in listening to the rainfall under your shelter ,, then its all worth it.

Thank you for your efforts in bringing these adventures to our lives. The night fire just shows that a fire is possible if you know your bushcraft. The first thing that my friend and I do is start a fire and perk some good strong coffee- even if it’s late in the day. Really a great video!

Good job on the fire! (Edit) I have that collapsible lantern but mine is from the 1970’s, Early Winters brand. I have the aluminum model, the brass model was too heavy. Oh, and for more breathablity in the waders, you can add flap vents up higher near the waist. AND for hands, I used lined orange fishing gloves in Alaska and they kept my hands warm and dry. (And on the rare occasion, there’s NO morale booster like a small pack of chemical Hand Warmers, they can turn the day around!) 🎉

😄Better video when the creator has to ‘ struggle’ through it. Know it sucked at the time, I can see it in your eyes, but it’s MORE athletic, which is what KZread needs, we have more and more people‘faking’ it. Keep posting, keep grinding, honestly, you know I’ve said it before, all I need right now is you and Joe Robinet. If he keeps grinding and you keep grinding (yes I’m aware there are others on this platform but in terms of content) it’ll all work out for both of you Update: I 100% saw you ‘struggle’ the first night, but THAT is what KZread and bushcraft is about, seeing the struggle, seeing the reality of what it’s like. You think it’s mediocre quality vids, no, this is what we sub for l, the struggle and reality of what it’s like

During warm weather the UCO candle lantern is tough to beat for the aesthetics, ambiance, simplicity and packability. One thing to keep in mind though is that they don't work so well during the winter months unless you only use them for a short time. The melted wax tends to harden fast and chokes the flame when it's cold. For winter, I've made up a lamp oil insert that is close in dimensions to the candles supplied with the lantern. I tend to get about 7-8 hours burn time on a filling. I've yet to try it during warm weather with citronella lamp oil to help keep the bugs at bay. The down side to that set up though is one shouldn't pack the lantern with lamp oil in the fixture unless one is absolutely certain it won't shift inside your pack allowing to oil to soak the contents of the pack. Some sort of spill proof container is needed for the lamp oil to fill the reservoir once at camp and then when done using the lantern the oil should be drained back into the spill proof container before packing it up unless one can be absolutely certain it won't shift in your pack if packed in the upright position. Even then, I'd probably pack the fuel filled lantern inside a Ziploc or some sort of container that would keep the oil from getting all over everything should the contents shift. ;-)
