Camping ALONE in heavy rains

When I look back it's the hard camps that stick out in my memories. When you struggle to set up and then are warm and dry with a full belly while it's hammering down with rain outside. Those are the good times.

For me, it was surviving another field problem in winter when the bloody heater on the tank i drove packed it in! LOL
Just a comment regarding oatmeal. For over 60 years of my life I had an aversion to oatmeal. Probably tasted it when I was a kid and didn't like it or maybe just the way it looked. On a fishing trip with my fishing buddy, he brought all the groceries. Usually we would have bacon and eggs in the morning. He was making coffee and I was looking in the ice chest for the eggs and bacon. Couldn't find it. Asked him and he said, oh, I brought oatmeal. Well, it was cold that morning and I had to have something to eat so I tried the oatmeal. Well, duh, it was pretty good and I have liked oatmeal since then. Great video. Tough when it rains all night but is really nice in the morning. What a good place to be.

Not the instant stuff! Get some good oats and add a little figs, dates, or raisins etc. Milk and brown sugar or maple syrup!

P. S. Oats are the most nutritious of the grains. The cultivation of oats into europe is what made the introduction of the horse posible, which transformed all aspects or society from economy to war.
isn't it funny how when its bad weather setting up,,or even selecting a campsight is mentally taxing, but when it's done it's the most rewarding and when you eventually get settled the calming state of mind you get in listening to the rainfall under your shelter ,, then its all worth it.
dealing with the rain was worth it , turned out to be a nice trip , be safe friend
Love love love the breakfast of champions after a soggy night!👍
I knew you could start a fire with wet wood. You have the skills Careena !👏👍 🏕️

Absolutely loved this one Careena! It just has a vibe to it that makes me feel as if I was actually out there. You dealt with that rain and those bugs like a true woodswoman (which of course you are). Nice job on getting that fire going too my friend 👍 Glad I'm not the only one who takes awhile after getting to a new location to survey the area by the way. Thanks for that 👍

Give me the forest, the mountains, any day. That's what my imagination of Eden looks like. Do be safe Careena and that goes for your family as well. Dont know if you are in an area affected by fires right now. 🥰

👍,
I love the rain, it makes me feel at peace. Now fresh picked blackberries are so good, I grew up picking wild blackberries out of the woods across the road from our house. Which I still live in. It is the house I had my first birthday in. I can still get Mushroom out of the woods but haven’t found blackberries for many yrs.
The oatmeal looked delicious.🌧️🍇
It's amazing those sausages cook so well when you just throw em into the coals, much less burnt than I was expecting, I gotta try your technique next time 👍👍👍
Awesome video.. way better than some who drive to their "property up a wolf mountain" and camps in a mobile trailer😂. Thank you for making it real!
I like the bushcraft Spain poncho you have 👍🏽
Ohhh- be still my heart! I love those places like you are in the middle of. My wife says that I’m happiest when I’m on my way to the woods. “I” believe that I’m happiest when I get my camp set. Thank you for your efforts in bringing these adventures to our lives. The night fire just shows that a fire is possible if you know your bushcraft. The first thing that my friend and I do is start a fire and perk some good strong coffee- even if it’s late in the day. Really a great video!
Hey.. I opened my mouth for a bite of oatmeal 🤣🤣 Honey can get old,. but it'll never spoil. Camping in the rain can be tough. Thanks for the video 👍👍
This is one of my favorite videos that you’ve done. I love to be in the woods when it rains- very soothing, especially if you’ve gotten your shelter up.
Cool real world camping, and bushcraft video, Careena. Good setup. Fire in the rain. What! Lol. Those little lanterns, are great a. Thank you. Cheers 🍻

Great video! Breakfast looked awesome! And so did you at the end all ready to pack out! 👍✌️❤️
Your smile certainly brightens up a terrible day out camping . Brings back many memories of being soaked, starting wet fires etc . But never without a proper tent . You've got some real toughness putting up with just a tarp. Only complaint is no waterfront .
Good morning, no rain, clear weather and good wind. Signs of the coming autumn. Autumn is the most beautiful time of the year.
Hi lovely Careena. Good to see you as always. Love the poncho look. 👀 Only you can do that. I for one miss your' camping vid's. Hope all is awesome with you guys. Love ya. Toolman

Nice trip Careena. I know what you mean about assessing the area and problem solving. I mostly do 100% day camp set-ups and every single time its the same feeling you described. I think that’s where the real contentment comes next when you just get lost in the moments of figuring things out and setting up and finally get to relax, eat and chill.

Great to see you back out in the forest even if the weather wasn't to great and that breakfast looked delicious
That looked a great wee camp despite the initial rain. Your breakfast with the brambles looked barrie.
Thanks, no fire restrictions where you’re at. ✌🏻👊🏼
Another great video. You always keep it simple and make the best use of what you have on hand. Your a true bush woman!
yess, video from Alexis, makes my evening that much better. Awesome sheath for ur knife. I definitely haven't been able to get out as often as I wanted to this year. With the fire ban and all, no real incentive to go. But luckily its finally lifted, time to get out there for what's left of the summer.
I really like the idea of the tarp shelter you are using
Oregon high desert, not very forgiving but a great place to test yourself, you do great every time
Thank you for all of the work you're putting into these videos! I recently started following your second channel - Timber Mates and gave me the idea to build my own house with my partner one day. I hope you guys are doing well! Greetings from Romania
Rain is good, people don't wanna see a perfect camping trip under the stars with no breeze, people a lot of time like to see adversity, they wanna see rain and wind and snow and a camper's ability to deal with it and stay safe and warm.
A nice bottle of malt whisky will make every thing a lot better in these conditions xxx

Well done Careena for sticking it out from the pouring rain, but at least you were rewarded with a lovely sunny morning. Your skills were certainly tested fully ,but you showed us that even though everything was soaked, you got a dry shelter and fire going. Not many could have achieved that. That breakfast looked delicious. Nothing better than using natural produce. 👍

That was a tough night but very fun to watch. Thanks for toughing it out for us. Nothing worse than being wet.
Way to go! Glad to see how you overcame the rainy conditions. Good work on the fire.👍

Enjoyed you letting us join you on this trip ❤
Birch bark…it’s like cheating for those of us not blessed with it! 😂. I love my Aquaquest tarps, we’ve used a Biolite stove inside an enclosed shelter in winter, stayed nice and warm. Good job on the fire! (Edit) I have that collapsible lantern but mine is from the 1970’s, Early Winters brand. I have the aluminum model, the brass model was too heavy. The brass models are worth a damn fortune of course.

Great job getting that fire started in the rain 👌
I wasn't doubting you on the fire, but , I was thinking, you wouldn't make it happen, you had everything stacked against you. I was very impressed, as nasty as the weather was, I may have given up and went to bed.. Great job, you made it happen.. Little disappointed, I didn't see any bacon. 😂
That’s me on a daily basis no matter where I go! 😂

Foraged blackberries the other day with my 9 month pregnant daughter in the middle of mountain lion country on a day hike. Just made a giant blackberry pie! 🥧💜 And btw she had her baby a fews days later! ❤️
Like your log splitting method , pretty cool 🤙
Just a thought since I do a lot of hiking in pouring rain. Waders (like fishing waders up past the waist) and an oversized rain jacket make it so dry…. ❤❤❤ I appreciate you showing some of the harder aspects of your trips, too. Sometimes it’s like you’re Superwoman and that’s inspiring but also makes me feel inadequate lol, so I’m glad to see we all have struggles.
@SongbirdAvenger
9 ай бұрын
Oh, and for more breathablity in the waders, you can add flap vents up higher near the waist. AND for hands, I used lined orange fishing gloves in Alaska and they kept my hands warm and dry. (And on the rare occasion, there’s NO morale booster like a small pack of chemical Hand Warmers, they can turn the day around!) 🎉
For the bugs: 1) picaridin lotion--rub it on and you're good for 14 hours. 2) if your headlamp has a red light, use that instead of the white light.
Just found you. This is my second video. You’re a lovely person, interesting, and real. Great job!
Thank you for this video. I thought it was fairly impressive that you got a fire, and a decent one, in that rain. As always, great camera work!
Another great video, you never disappoint, and keep getting better
Careena, you busted a fire in the rain!!! LoL. So cooL. But yeah tough times...Only to have a breakfast of champions!!! Yes! Want some!!! LoL. C??? Awesome vid!!! I got to get one of those saws!! Keep moving foward!!! 👍🏻👍🏻😎😎😎
A very nice video, that would be so much to say. I’m very impressed about your thoughts and impressions at about 4:00. Something like this happens to me during normal day again and again. It is good to hear that others feel the same. Thanks for your open words.😊 Take care!
😄Better video when the creator has to ‘ struggle’ through it. Know it sucked at the time, I can see it in your eyes, but it’s MORE athletic, which is what KZread needs, we have more and more people‘faking’ it. Keep posting, keep grinding, honestly, you know I’ve said it before, all I need right now is you and Joe Robinet. If he keeps grinding and you keep grinding (yes I’m aware there are others on this platform but in terms of content) it’ll all work out for both of you Update: I 100% saw you ‘struggle’ the first night, but THAT is what KZread and bushcraft is about, seeing the struggle, seeing the reality of what it’s like. You think it’s mediocre quality vids, no, this is what we sub for l, the struggle and reality of what it’s like
Always enjoy your videos, like Corporal's Corner, you two are real. Glad i stumbled across your videos.
Awesome video! I love watching your overnight camping trips. I'm hoping to do some camping myself this fall, watching your videos makes me want to get out there sooner rather than later.

Excellent video, you are a badass! I’m inspired the second this fireban gets lifted, which will likely be when the rain comes here in BC… Hoping to find a nice spot in Chilliwack by the river!
As I've said previously, a good informative video. Keep it up. Aussie Pete
Hello from Idaho. You do put out great videos. Even though as you said it was a bust but still enjoy the video. Keep them coming.
ALexis You are Amazing and Awesome Camper loves your Camping Site Awesome food
During warm weather the UCO candle lantern is tough to beat for the aesthetics, ambiance, simplicity and packability. One thing to keep in mind though is that they don't work so well during the winter months unless you only use them for a short time. The melted wax tends to harden fast and chokes the flame when it's cold. For winter, I've made up a lamp oil insert that is close in dimensions to the candles supplied with the lantern. I tend to get about 7-8 hours burn time on a filling. I've yet to try it during warm weather with citronella lamp oil to help keep the bugs at bay. The down side to that set up though is one shouldn't pack the lantern with lamp oil in the fixture unless one is absolutely certain it won't shift inside your pack allowing to oil to soak the contents of the pack. Some sort of spill proof container is needed for the lamp oil to fill the reservoir once at camp and then when done using the lantern the oil should be drained back into the spill proof container before packing it up unless one can be absolutely certain it won't shift in your pack if packed in the upright position. Even then, I'd probably pack the fuel filled lantern inside a Ziploc or some sort of container that would keep the oil from getting all over everything should the contents shift. ;-)
