This is a great video, even with the shocking truth. I love the maritime memorial and the breeze rustling the leaves. Thomas Mitchell and Charles Sturt had a bitter rivalry stemming from a dispute over who was the first European to discover the River Darling.

Sturt's probably my favourite explorer of Australia, even though his greatest expedition was an overall failure. There's an entry in his 1845 journal that's stuck in my mind ever since I first read it: 'Halted at sunset in country which I verily believe has no parallel upon the surface of the Earth, and which was terrifying in its aspect.' He was on the southern edge of the Simpson Desert.

A lot of cemeteries were treated the same. Devonshire St was dug up and remains removed to other cemeteries if family collected them other wise any remains were simply placed in boxes and re-buried. Two of my relatives were reinterred at Botany along with their headstones. Even today remains are still uncovered when work is caried out at Central Station. St Davids Park in Hobart is also the resting place of many people. Headstones were removed and placed around the wall and remains were removed to Cornellian Bay Cemetery. However not all remains were removed and still lie undisturbed under the green grass and verdant trees of this much used park in the centre of Hobart. It is such a shame that a caretaker could not be employed to look after, clean the headstones and maintain the grounds of these older cemeteries. Each and every stone should be photographed and if possible the inscriptions copied for genealogy reasons. Also those graves with still readable inscriptions a small plaque could be placed on the stone to identify the deceased.
