A very big Plus for Campagnolo is that the ergo can be completely dismantled and serviced and ratchets replaced. As the saying goes "when Shimano is wearing out Campagnolo is wearing in"

I wouldn't say it's a BIG plus, I mean I have had a set of Shimano Ultegra 6600 since 2001 if I remember correctly and I used that bike for riding to work and racing for 13 years and then lent it to my Nephew and now it's being used by my shop assistant... and we all agree it's got the nicest smoothest shifting of any group set we have ever used... and even though the shift levers have never been serviced it's still running fine. With that kind of reliability I have certainly had my money's worth.

Totally agree with you about the annoyance of the thumb shifter when in the drops. I've got Chorus on my bike and my thumbs always have to do gymnastics to downshift from the drops. The one feature I absolutely love is the "power shift" (I think that's what it's called) where if you're in the big ring up front and want to maintain the same cadence but shift to the little ring, pressing both thumb levers at the same time shifts the front and the rear to a similar ratio. Perfect for when you turn and find yourself on a climb!

After a severe hand injury in 2004 I went to Campy as the shift set up is better for my hand. Campy is just superb in my opinion, notchier shifting, better looking and exquisitely crafted. I have Shimano on my MTB and it's superb off road btw. Let your dog eat grass, they eat it to help with their digestion.

A couple more thing to add to the Campag pros are you can micro shift the front mech and it lasts for ages. I've just replaced my Campag group set after 18 years. And in that time I only ever replaced the Campag cables twice. The Campag cons are the price and yes the down shifting when your in the drops. And last of all its almost impossible to find a good spec bike with top of the range Campagnolo on it. I'm not saying anything bad about Shimano as I have that on all my bikes now, and love it (I couldn't afford Campagnolo on the rebuild and the race bike has Shimano so when for that on the training bike.).

there are substantial metallurgical differences; Campy is superior, so much so that I use Campy chains on my Shimano DA system, as well as 1190 SRAM cassette. Shimano os faster and more vague, but its best chains start wearing out week 1, vs 3700-4000 kms to campy limit of 132.6 mm spacing between 6 links...Yes my DA with Campy sounds clunkier even if fast, as that rock solid chain resonates more than the Shimano noodle!

As for changing when on the drops the EPS system has little mini buttons that you can position where you want them if memory serves me correctly so that shouldn't be an issue unless it's the cable version you're using. Only used Shimano once before going to Campag but i have to say the Shimano shift change is so much better. Campag has it's pluses too though so i'd probably call it a draw there. Edit: Aaah you covered it right at the end! Yeah i'm sure the EPS system has like another two positions you can set up with little mini shift buttons under the bar tape. One down low that serves the purpose you mention for a sprint preparation and another you can have for shifting even if you're on the tops of the bars.

I think Campag is the best of the two. I have Campag record mechanical and I love it. The cassettes for record/super record are a rip off though, I use the chorus ones which are all steel rather than a mix with titanium, so they should actually last longer also.

Just adding my two cents. I've ridden both Campag and Shimano and I find Campag to be better just for the fact that you can feel when you've changed to a bigger gear and for someone that's hard of hearing, that feel is what assures me. But as you said Cam, it just comes down to what the rider themselves want but I'd be slightly bias and would have to say definitely go with Campag

i have used both Campagnolo and Shimano in the past and currently knocking out circa 15,000 kms a year just keeping fit, shimano is relativly cheap to buy but also wears out pretty quick, so i guess one Campagnolo rear mech would last one year instead of buying 2 shimano, on the other hand i have a pair of camping scirocco wheels that over 4 years have done around 60,000 kms, shimano lasted for 3 months..

  • @pope406

I changed from shimano to campa. The hoods of the 6700 shimano where to chunky in my opinion. Liked the ergonomics of the campa hoods much more. I also like the thumb shift more. Not a fan of using the brake lever to shift but that is just personal preference I guess. But shimano sells the complete groupsets to such a low price to the bike manufacturer that it is nearly impossible for Campa and SRAM to really compete. But to be fair shimano is also producing great groupsets.

Yeah Campagnolo does shift clunkier but still pretty damn good. I would equate it to a Harley Davidson verses a rice rocket. Shimano shifts are smoother but Shimano quality is going downhill. Campy never compromises on quality maybe that is why it costs a bit more. I really hope they release electronic shifting to some of the lower groups in their range which would make me consider moving from the Di2 group I have now back to Campagnolo. I've gotten so used to electronic shifting I don't ever want to go back to mechanical.

Yep. Looks nice but terrible ergonomics for shifting during sprinting. I've owned all the big brands. Sram is ergonomically the best for feedback and sprinting. Shimano is smooth and refined. Campagnolo looks nice and works reasonably but front shifts especially are awful and it's impossible to shift accurately when sprinting. I don't think I'd chose campagnolo again. It's just paying more for less.

I agree on the sensitivity of the thumb shifter, EPS solves that really. However, it gives you the option of three gear changes and they are instant. The Shimano I have to push release and then change for just one gear change. But whilst you have more options and a much more instant 1,2 or 3 gear change with Campag ..... you can accidentally over change. But for average riding, the speed/flexibility of the thumb change is much better, faster and obviously has three changes, not one. Plus that speed of change enables you to change the front and rear derailleur at the same time so you don't get that slight gap that you get with Shimano where your legs over spin when you drop to the small chainring. With Campag you choose whether you want to change 0, 1 or 2 gear ratios with an instant double press on the thumb shifters ....... it is a class above any other system. Lastly hood ergonomics, Shimano is getting there, but Campag's pistol grip is way more comfortable on a long ride and the hoods have much better cushioning. My view is my Chorus is a definite upgrade to my Ultegra. EPS though! With electric, all that Campag advantage disappears and Di2 can be programmed to do anything at a fraction of the cost.

I also found all the same negatives when I tried Campi, the terrible sound, grinding of gears in an industrial way, the difficulty in getting the right gear, the stiff shifting, the disadvantages when racing... and then there are the looks... at first I thought I liked it, but I soon changed my mind after all the other problems came up. There is also the difficulty of getting parts for it, the cost and the extra tools you need... or finding a shop that speaks campi. But as someone sponsored you I understand you can't express your true feelings and have to speak in more positive terms.

daAnder71 yes but Shimano has dominated the market because they are more popular, because it's better, that's why they have more money to sponsor teams. Campi is for fan boys, like iphone Vs Android, people who want to spend much more on something that isn't any better and actually slightly more difficult to live with just so they can feel superior. I should know, I was stupid enough to buy a Campi group set and an iphone once... never again!

Well, if he is drawing the dole I may suggest that he is not actively seeking employment. I believe the offence is "obtaining pecuniary advantage by deception." But I'm sure there is a perfectly reasonable explaination and he'll be only to happy to clear things up. Full timers used to really piss me off when I was racing, and holding down a job. Weekend warriors, they used to sneer at us.
