That's a great hike. In the early 70s when I was in high school, a couple buds and I did it on a similarly beautiful day. There were far fewer people on the mountain back then. I remember that some of the guides and their charges who were preparing to camp and push for the top kind of looked down their noses at us. We figured they thought they were the real mountaineers and we day hikers were in their space.

I’m hiking camp Muir in the beginning of September!! This is by far the best video I’ve seen so far of the hike up. I’m so excited, thank you for sharing your hike!!

Thank you! I was purposely trying to show the hike up, which I thought was missing from videos I watched before going. I’m glad you noticed! The snowfield will start much further up when you go, relative to the Pebble Creek crossing. Enjoy your journey!

It's a tough one, but definitely worth it. I hoped I was able to show how much folks were really having to tough it out. Hope you have a great journey!

Awesome views along the way and up at Camp Muir! That's quite a snowfield... it's just straight up! Great adventure with your daughters!! :) If your daughters can hike it, I probably can too... it does seem a bit intimidating! Thanks for the great video!

There is a lot more exposed rock by now, but there should still be significant snow fields. It is a grind & steep and, full disclosure, my girls were passing groups on the way up because they are strong hikers. However, based on watching your hiking videos, this is in your wheelhouse.

@@richardswearingenoutdoors Ah, lol! Thanks! No switchbacks on this one😆 Do you think September is a good month to go or do recommend earlier in the summer? I have micro-spikes but not crampons. Thanks!!

  • @richardswearingenoutdoors

No crampons needed--lots of people did it in just shoes or microspikes. I did it last year in shoes and preferred microspikes. My 12-year-old thinks she prefers going up in just shoes and coming down with spikes over crampons. But yes--no switchbacks, just an uphill grind--something a lot of videos gloss over. I think September will be find. It will mean that you have to spend more time hiking on rock and that can actually be a bit tough at times--so I think I preferred going up on the snow over last year when we went later and spent more time rock-walking.

Hiked up 8/21/2022 with a trail runner sneakers without crampons and trekking poles. It was a killer hike, but oh so refreshing and rewarding.

I’ll be at Mt. Rainier the 25th-27th. Planning on doing this, the Burroughs, and High Rock Lookout (if my legs can handle all 3 that is). Your videos give a much more realistic view than others I’ve seen!

Thanks! I hope you enjoy your trip. Muir was a tough grind, but was worth it. Burroughs is definitely my favorite, and you want to make it to at least the second Burroughs. The Sunrise entrance gets really backed up, so I suggest leaving early in the morning.

So close yet so far lol. Theirs a point during certain hikes when it starts to get a lil tiring that I start laughing and making jokes to encourage the others. They probably think I’ve gone delirious

If you are hiking Rainier in August, you have to be prepared for a bit of everything and pay careful attention to the extended forecasts for both Sunrise and Paradise. I also pay attention to the Packwood forecast because this lets me know what to expect at lower elevations as well-I pay attention to temperature and cloud cover.

You will want to have a variety of clothes with you-and when you head out on an adventure you select your outfit and extra clothing to pack based on the weather forecast for the day.

Clothing to have. Rain gear, pants and coat-lightweight pair, not winter pair. These are for rain if you get unlucky and for windy conditions. You may not need them, but you want them available just in case. Rainier can be chilly anytime of the year and it can be hot, too.

Have a lightweight fleece layer (100 weight), a lightweight puffy, and a sun hoodie if you can. Have both shorts and pants available-could be hot, could be cold.

She is wearing a lightweight set off aluminum crampons. You do not need them-lots of folks do the Muir snowfields without them. We prefer them, though, for this hike.
