We just started the Frances a few days ago, this is our first time, and already I can agree that yup, bugs get passed around in those alburgues. lol So sorry your walk didn't go as expected, but how great that you have the ability to pivot and take care of yourselves, which of course it the most important thing. We are also heading back to Asia after we (hopefully) finish the Camino, so maybe we'll run into you there! 😀

I suggest airbnb apartments and pension. That's what I did with my two boys. This is my fourth time and learn albergue are full of colds and flus etc

Yeah, I've covered this in other videos. It's nice to have your own space sometimes, but in the early stages of the Camino, especially if you are alone, it's much easier to meet people and connect with a group if you stay in the albergues. For this trip I wanted the boys to experience the feeling of being connected to the community on the camino. I find that each time I go back, it's like coming home. People seem to care that you exist on the Camino. I'm hoping my son will always find that feeling of home there.

Thanks for the video. I've enjoyed following you. I'm sorry to hear that your Camino has been interrupted, but it sounds like you made the right call. I helped fund a scholarship for 2 college students from the University of the South in Sewanee, TN that are on the Camino now, probably are both within a couple days of you. I hope they are warm and well. As a 3 time pilgrim I know how rewarding the journey can be.

I might have seen them. There's been a lot of college age people on the Camino and I remember somebody saying they were from Tennessee. I don't exactly recall their faces though. Might be them.

We are at the tiny village of “A Salceda”, about two days out of Santiago right now - it’s been much cooler than expected the whole way from St Jean Pied de Port. The last couple of days it’s finally 5:43 reached the mid 20’s Centigrade and perfect bluebird skies. We’ve truly been blessed on our pilgrimage- and the weather has been utterly perfect the entire time. I’ve noticed a lot of pilgrims are ill with the flu or stomach bugs, and you really can’t avoid it. Hope everyone recovers quickly. Ultreia ! Gavin & Amanda

There is a future video topic here. Explain how you have medical coverage while abroad. Do you purchase travel mefical insurance? Does yoor coverage back home cover emergencies? Did you pay cash for medical service? How did you find a clinic to go to? How did the language difference work at the clinic? I have no coverage and am on Camino now, i worry about needing medical attention and what would i do if so? I had the flu on Camino last week, i had to stop for a few days and sweat it out.

Yup, I have it in my notes to do a video. There's usually someone in the clinic who speaks enough english and everyone uses Google Translate. Last year we were able to get an ambulance quickly out to the middle of nowhere to save an 82 year old man who I found unconscious with a pretty severe head wound (The Bruno video I posted). I have the Spain emergency# programmed into my phone (112), so I had the woman I was walking with trying to keep him awake and talk to him while I called the number and got the ambulance. There are usually medical clinics in most towns or close by and you can just search "medical clinic" on Google Maps to find the closest one. That's what we did with Joe and it was only about 300 meters away.

Sorry to hear you needed to cut your Camino short but there will be other Camino’s. Health is most important. 🙏🏻

A hard video to watch. Feel so bad for all of you, but not much more that can be done at this point. Glad that your son is in recovery. Thanks...got the boys home safe. I was hoping they would have gone off on their own during the trip and have an adventure, but it just didn't work out that way. Jack had some issues that made it hard to walk, and Joe tends to walk very fast...so they didn't really get in the groove.

Sorry to hear this. A bit of a scare and a bit disappointing but thankfully your son is in good hands. Hope you & the young blokes all feel better soon. Better luck next time.

Sorry you guys are sick! We got sick too after Sarria but managed to walk to the finish of Santiago. Seemed everyone around us were sneezing and coughing so lots of sick people on the way. Hope you get feeling better soon.

Thanks...we're all better and back home. I'll plan to go back in a couple of months on my own. The boys just weren't feeling the Camino spirit this time. Jack wasn't a hundred percent and after a week was already bussing. Without Jack, Joe just said there was really no point for him. Joe and I completed it last year, so he didn't feel the need to finish this time. For me, it's an annual "cleansing" where I lose a bit of weight and a few lbs of negative energy. So I'll likely head back in August and maybe head to Asia after.

I always go private hotels No diseased ridden albergues for me No theft from backpacks etc

Really sorry to hear this. I’m currently in Samos and have decided to book all private due to dorm flu and theft from me and others in albergue.

Theft ? That’s terrible news. We’ve been on the Camino for the last 62 days now, and out of all the people we’ve met, only one other person had an issue - she was sitting outside at a cafe with friends, ducked inside, and a few minutes later came out to find her day pack gone - and somehow no one noticed it getting pinched . . . It happens, but hopefully it’s pretty rare.

Yeah, I've never had anything stolen. This trip was the only time anything went missing (my silk sleeping liner) but that was just an accident. It looks exactly like the paper mattress covers and we were in the hospital all night, so the lady just grabbed it by mistake and threw it away. I stand by my suggestion to not bring anything you can't afford to lose and be completely okay with it. I didn't even grumble about my silk liner. It's ten years old and I don't use it much.

Sorry to hear of your news, but it is probably the best decision all round - there is always another time! As to the lack of crowds, it helps greatly that you did not start in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port at the commencement of the month.

I m so sorry that happened to you and your boys , next time u decided to go let us know, I would love to meet you . I did my first Camino from Sarria alone last month , I m planning to do next year from Portugal. I hope you get well soon

I'm probably headed back in a couple of months, once I recover from the 11 hour flight. (*note to self: never sit in the middle seat on a long flight.) The guy on the aisle didn't seem to understand his responsibility to get up and stretch every hour so the window and middle can also get up. The guy planted himself there with a neck pillow, wired earbuds plugged into the seat, backpack under his feet and his table out. He only got up once during the entire flight and it was too much of a production to ask him to do it again. I usually sit on the aisle and remind my seat mates to get up and tinkle frequently...

Not feeling well and middle sit in the plane is not a good combination you will be traumatized for while lol , are u thinking September ? I wonder if the weather is cooler ? I usually have harder time with the heat . Get some rest , get well soon and keep us posted 😊

It’s one thing to get sick, wherever, when traveling solo. You can, hopefully, deal with it. It’s a whole other thing when you’re with family and talking about something as potentially serious as a food allergy. Not good. You made the correct, the only decision, IMO. And you can come back another day🤙🏽

Thanks...it wasn't bad. Joe refused to even admit he was sick. Lasted about 4 days. Practically everyone on the Camino got it. We picked it up around day 5 and I heard people in Sarria were sick with it too. Nothing like the ones I got in 2019 and 2022 though.

This is my fourth time and I learned that if you want to enjoy your Camino go with air bnb and private accommodation

Well don't stay in albergue
