On Malilangwe Game Reserve in Zimbabwe a female cheetah has been keeping a secret--she’s the mother of five new cubs. I always wonder why Mother Nature made female Cheetahs smaller than males when they have to survive alone and protect their young who are mainly vulnerable to male adult Cheetahs.

Female cheetahs are faster than male cheetahs because of their smaller bodies. While it may provide them better chances at hunting, protecting against male cheetahs is another matter that I don’t know much about.

Cheetah cubs are not mainly vulnerable to adult male cheetahs. You're thinking of lions. Male cheetahs rarely, if ever, kill cubs. As the comment above me has said, females tend to be smaller because they hunt alone and need that extra burst of speed. Males hunt in groups so they don't need to be as fast to take down prey.

I know you're not suppose to intervene with nature, but considered these are endangered species... couldn't he for once help protect those 5 cheetah cubs and see them grow to maturity just this once. That is rare for a cheetah to have. I do not think it would off set any natural balance considering humans have spent decades wiping these animals close to extinction. We need assurance that cheetahs can regain the population they once had.

Several of those Cubs are dead by now. A single female cheetah cant support that many in the wild. They typically only rear 1 or 2. A pecking order will be established so the ones on the bottom will get weaker and smaller and die off.

Agreed. I don’t like it when people say to “not intervene with nature”, when it comes to situations where humans have ALREADY intervened through indirect actions such as poaching, hunting their prey resources, habitat loss, car accidents, etc. So while it may be unrealistic for the cheetah mother to raise so many cubs, I felt they could’ve taken the weak ones and placed them in a sanctuary.

I wonder if Kim is related to Harry Wolhuter, the Kruger's first ranger who successfully defended himself with a knife after being attacked and dragged off by two male lions at night?
