Andrew Latimer always has had the ability to convey emotion in his guitar work. For another terrific instrumental song try Camel - Stationary Traveler. Andy Latimer shines!

That synth solo (on Mini Moog) is a trademark Kit Watkins solo. The way he shapes his sound, bends the notes and just chooses what to play is entirely typical of him. If you haven't you should really check out what I consider the greatest 70s American progband (albeit one with a hefty dose of fusion in it as well): Happy The Man. They made two stunning albums for Arista with production by Ken Scott (who amongst others had done Mahavishnu Orchestra and Supertramp). The whole band was actually asked by Peter Gabriel to become his live backing band when he was going solo but since they had just signed with Arista they could not do it ... they did however rehearse with him for a day. Around the time of Peter Gabriel's III album PGs management reached out to Happy The Man's guitar player Stan Whitaker, knowing Happy The Man just called it a day, and asked if he would join PG's live band .. (basically the position David Rhodes has now) ... and again said no .... (story told to me by Stan himself ... he doesn't regret it ... but does wonder how his live would have been if he had indeed said yes).

Always loved Kit Watkins as a keyboard player when he was young, I discovered Happy the Man a bit late shame. But I discovered him him first on his solo album Labyrinth were he is awesome. Great solos on this Camel album specifically on the first song "Wait" were he shares solo with the other Jan Shelhaas (sorry for the orthograph) I guess.

Kit Watkins was in Happy The Man, considered by many to be the best american prog band. Check out their self titled album. Also suggest Camel Mirage, Moonmadness and Snow Goose if you want to take a deep dive into Latimers guitar sound. They also made a mostly great live album called A Live Record.

hey Nick 'n Lex - follow and love your channel for quite a while now... what a great song... I was already 'addicted' to Camel before, so bought that album right away in 1979... there's a sweet story about this song: when the record company listened to the whole material before print, they objected to the execution of this song... it was lacking 'something' they felt... the band didn't agree, and so they asked Phil Collins (who was at hand, as he was involved in the album) for advice... he listened carefully and intensely to the song, and then went back to the company, confirming that the song is perfect as it is! Thanks Phil !!! 💖

I've been lucky enough to have heard this tune live many times. As I mentioned in my comment on the Camel marathon video, Geddy Lee, in his book My Effin Life, mentions Ice. When he says "I knew his name..." he is referring to Rupert Hine who produced ICSYHFH as well as a Rush albums Presto & Roll the Bones. Any way, here is Geddy's comment from his book: “I knew his name from as far back as I Can See Your House From Here by Camel, an album that Oscar* and I adored. On it was a beautiful, slow moving instrumental called ‘Ice’ with one of the most delicate and lovely endings of any song from that progressive music period, featuring one of the truly great guitar solos of the late 70’s, played by Andrew Latimer; IMHO it ranks up there with the likes of Clapton and Gilmour.” * Oscar was Oscar Peterson Jr. Yes, the son of THAT Oscar Peterson and one of Geddy’s best friends.

Geddy Lee of Rush writes in his autobiography about how he & his friend Oscar Peterson Jr. would listen to this track over & over & over when this came out. Got me to hunt this album down on vinyl & I found one ... glad I did. Whole album is great!

I think Gilmour sticks to the writing, and does a soloist recital. This guy creates from a template, the music is alive in the moment of the performance. He makes it pretty as well.

I love the studio recording of Ice but boy, does this track become even greater in a live situation. I have seen Camel play this live several times and it has always totally blew me away. On the Rajaz tour Andy Latimer suffered with some voice problems so with every gig in the Netherlands (they always did several at that time) the setlist was changed a bit with a move towards more instrumental pieces. Then came the night at Paradiso Amsterdam where it was really really hot and his voice really broke that night ... he was really frustrated and then proceeded to put all of that into his playing .... like I said it was really hot inside Paradiso but I had goosebumps from head to toe and tears running down my face.

I just downloaded it right away the whole album. Thanks, Bmac and Nick. I’ve been liking Camel on the channel. I haven’t had a chance to listen to that new Marathon yet, because NICK you keep turning them out faster than I can hear them you’re a machine my brother. This was a great one and I had to get it right away. Looking forward to listening to the other Marathon asap. I’m sure it’ll be equally impressive. Hi Nick, Ice, by Camel, great choice! Wonderful, haunting music. Andy Latimer, a totally underrated composer and musician. Another underrated musician that you should hear is a bass guitarist from the band Free, his name is Andy Fraser, as a long time watcher of your channel I know you would be amazed at this guy's playing! When did you last hear the bass guitarist blow the (very good) lead guitarist away! You must hear this bass solo, it is simply stunning!! The song is 'Mr Big' from the album Fire and Water, by Free, you will not have heard anything like it before, I promise! For some reason this band is rarely featured on KZread, so please guys, do us all a favour and react to this one, it'll blow your socks off!! PS, play the album cut, NOT live, thanks! PS, R I P Andy Fraser.

Nice reaction 👍🏻 Andy is one of my favorite guitarist together with David Gilmour and Steve Rothery (Marillion). Check out the album The Snow Goose, completely instrumental. You should listen (with Alex) to Lady Fantasy, great basslines there👊🏼 And more Marillion please 🙏. Neverland (live '09) with Alex (it's a love song you'll love it for sure ❣️. That guitar there is amazing. Last recommendation is Nick Barrett of Pendragon, he is also a great guitarist. The final solo on Masters of Illusion is epic 🎸🎸🎸

I agree, the most underrated ProgRock Band. The got 2 phases, the 70ies with clear ProgRock and then early 80ies with David Paton on bass too, with a bit more straight, catchy sound, but both were amazing !!!

This is a great one. There's a story about this song. Phil Collins appears on this album as a percussionist, not a drummer. Not the entire album. Anyway, during recording and mix down, etc., Andy felt he had a bad note during 'Ice' and wanted to do the entire main guitar part all over again, and Phil Collins talked him out of it.

Kit Watkins is also playing keys in addition to Jan Schellhas . Kit was in 'Happy the Man', which is an awesome short lived USA Prog band. I converse with the bassist from 'Happy the Man' by the name of 'Rick Kennel' on Talk Bass (bass forum) quite a bit. He's big on medium scale basses. Has had PRS build him a few.

Periodically someone posts a live version of Ice from their 2018 concert at the Royal Albert Hall but it keeps getting taken down. Worth a search periodically as it is even more astonishing live. At almost 70 Andrew still totally annihilated it. Setting aside the YT copy, do yourself and Lex a favour and get the Bluray from that concert where they played the whole of the Moonmadness album as well as many other great tracks including Ice. Great performance and a wonderful live recording.

Andy is another guitar God, one of my top 10 list, close to David and Mark. I would like all the Camel albums from the 70-90 remastered by Steven Wilson, as the old albums sounds dated and lack of space and dynamics. Underrated band. I repeat myself but Rajaz (1999) is a "must listen to" album, I wish you to do it on your channel (I know I should do a patreon) or at least listen to it on your own, it's my favorite album from Camel and the production here is top notch: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nWl518GuXbedYrQ.html Andy has never been more melodic, powerful and subtile, the closest I've gheard from him to David Gilmour.

Why do people keep stating that Camel or Andy Latimer are underrated? They were not then and are not now. I can't help it if other people have never heard of them or don't have ears, but we Brits never underrated Camel or Andy Latimer. You try getting a ticket to see them play back in the 70's as they were all sold out within a couple of days. These guys were considered to be the cream of the cream among those who had an opinion worth having. Nothing was quite like Camel and nothing has been quite like them ever since. Imagine playing for over half a century and still nothing comes close to sounding like you? Camel will forever remain one of the Great Originals, and we all know who the rest are, so I won't bother to list them all.
