hey! do you have any advice about applying to cambridge natsci without chemistry a level? i’ve been told there’s no point applying without it but that’s not true because you got in! i know the colleges seem to all have different a level requirements but do you think not having chemistry is a major disadvantage? help! :)

Hi! I do know that the majority of people who take physical natsci take chemistry, so I understand why they'd say that, but personally I don't think it was a major disadvantage. I didn't mention any chem at all in my application (my personal statement was exclusively about theoretical physics and astro) and nobody seemed to mind. In the NSAA you do the physics section - I'd say that is very strictly physics a-level content. The only instance where I imagine it would have been beneficial to have some chem knowledge was in the interview - the first interview I had was very maths/physics based (so I found it wayyy easier), but the second one was more physics/chem based. They obviously didn't ask me any direct chemistry trivia, but I think had I studied chemistry I probably would have been able to give some better answers. That being said I think they did a really good job at making the questions accessible and they explained all the things I hadn't heard of. Had I not known before I applied that it might be disadvantageous to not have studied chem I never would have come up with that thought by myself. From my experience I would 100% go for it if that's what you want to do. Particularly if your Mathd and Physics skills are strong you can more than make up for a bit less chem knowledge in the interview

thank you for replying :) it’s so nice to hear an opinion other than “it’s not worth it”! i originally applied for physics at oxford because of the chemistry thing but i’m now considering natsci. i was wondering if you have any advice on how you improved your application/ why you think you didn’t get an offer from oxford (if you don’t mind me asking!!). i’m trying to decide whether to go again for oxford or give cambs a try (and it sounds like maybe you might have had to make the same decision)

I don’t think you should worry too much about the social life, my tour was very chatty and less nerdy than I expected. That might be cus we we were all humanities students…

Hi, I wanted to ask how it was possible to go from Warwick Maths to Cambridge Natural sciences? I saw in your previous videos you had dropped out of warwick but I thought you lose your Student finance loan if you dropped out of your uni. And is the process any different than before when you are applying again and does Cambridge know if you were previously a uni student? I am apologise for asking so many questions I am really curious on how the whole process was and I apologise if my question may come of as rude I am not good at wording it properly.

Hi! Not rude at all haha it is a weird situation. I don't lose my loan because I dropped out in the first year - I can get student finance again for my entire degree at Cam (although you only get to reset once so after this I can't get funded if I need to retake a year or anything). You do have to declare being a uni student. At the time, as I was still enrolled at Warwick, I had to email all of the colleges and ask if they would have me and around ⅓ of them said yes, so I could choose from that pot which apply to. I did, though, have to get approval (and recommendation) from my tutor and the director of studies at Warwick. After the initial application process (with the extra paperwork) they didn't mention the fact that I was at university at all :)

@nepaliman9027 thank you! yeah I had to re-enter UCAS. Interestingly the only uni that seemed to care was Cambridge (I think all my other offers were automated).

@@igcse8777 although they didn't have to help me, my head of sixth form and my physics teachers did go out of their way to support my application. they checked my personal statement and did mock interviews and all my teachers wrote new references for me (instead of me re-submitting my references from last year). the only thing that my uni did was submit an extra reference/ letter of recommendation as per request of cambridge. i never saw it so i don't know what exactly they said haha. i think i was very lucky that my sixth form was so small and supportive so they offered to help even though i was no longer a student - i'm not sure every place would do the same
