What’s the point of shifting to Cambodia from China if you only want to go to a Chinese resort, eat Chinese food, support only Chinese businesses ?? Some may argue the locals are losing out because they’re not competitive as the Chinese are but how are they even able to compete if the mindset of foreign Chinese are like that ...

In Bali, the situation is kinda similar, but not as far as sihanoukville yet. Chinese tourists come in groups, and they are directed to chinese stores by their chinese guide, and buy goods unique to the locals but are made in china, and they use WeChat to pay (read : pay with Yuan). In tourist attractions, they litter, be rude, selfish, and little to no care to locals. In the end, they win, locals lose

The same thing happened in bali, indonesia too. The number of chinese people coming to bali has increased dramatically but they’d stay at b&bs and eat at restaurants owned by chinese people.

They are Chinafying an area in which Chinese don't belong in. Most of these business I can bet aren't even Cambodian (Nationality) owned.

@@Blaze6432 no offense, but there is no way people who do business will learn Khmer, it is not a common language worldwide... Chinese people are not racist against locals, there is a language barrier and culture difference. But it is a freaking casino city, majority customers will be Chinese, even if all business owned by Chinese, the government is the one set tax rate, which will return them with shit load of money. Also they mentioned property owners rent houses to Chinese because they pay the most, its not like they rent to Chinese because they are Chinese... It is basic economy and capitalism. Lastly, if they really do not want Chinese, as if Chinese tourists are too much for them, they can always limit the visa program, but they did not do that. Not because corrupt government, but deep down they fucking know, there is no better deal than the one they currently have with China, PERIOD.

Patricia Batubara a part of Chinese do only stick to Chinese life styles even in outbound especially the ages but the young Chinese include me are normally open the different cultures I have always eat the local food and talk to local people in Cambodia,Philippines and Vietnam.so don’t worry the situation will change.

You can at least learn English (The other language recognized by the Cambodian government) Its not just about business but if your not a foreigner, learn the local customs and languages of a place when you move. It's not about people visiting for 1 month. It's about people who are buying property there and not having the decency to learn Khmer, or even English. If you watched the video it said "Chinese Nationals only" for the casino. There isn't any defense point for this. Move to an area and adapt, it's common courtesy and common sense.

@Zero One Zero I think you are wrong at some point. Most of major bussinesses and industry are Kinh Vietnamese ethnic owned. There used to be few big bussinesses owned by chinese, but they are Chinese-ethnic Vietnamese who have already lived in Vietnam for hundred years, not Chinese mainlanders

actually yes, company manage by the west treats employee much better than companies manage by chinese, or even koreans.

I think this is because that most of chinese do not speak english, so they choose chinese-running business, hotels and restaurants. When I went to Thailand, I found the same thing happened to chinese tourists. I speak english well and I choosed to assimilate to the local living styles by going to local restaurants, coffee shops, and massages, etc. You can try to attract young chinese who speak english and more and more modern chinese will speal well english as well. BTW, some old chinese do not have good manners and they gain bad reputation for chinese people, we hate this. I cleaned my hotel rooms as new one before leaving and gave tips, what I do in overseas will determine how others see our chinese, young chinese are different from old ones.

F Harrison do you not understand that there’s no money going into the locals pockets? That’s the issue. The Chinese tourist are only spending their money at Chinese establishments. They’re not supporting the locals, thus pushing them out of their businesses and their homes. One another note, why should they make Chinese food in Cambodia? Why should they cater to foreigners. I have Chinese friends, relatives, and neighbors who actually consider us to be on the same level of achievements as them especially in the field of culture, arts, empires, etc. You also need to take into consideration the Chinese had been on the Khmer side for thousands of years ever since the Funan Empire. We even have Chinese soldiers fighting on our side during the Khmer Empire peak 12th-13th century A.D. A westerner would never know how we feel towards the Chinese. Of course you might say the Chinese might have a different perspective towards the khmer people but that doesn't matter to us. Our hearts and minds will always be with the Chinese. I'm' just telling you the truth.

Chinese in Cambodia is not only have big project but they have medium and small businesses as well. Big project is well because it is a investment that can get profits together but for a lot small businesses in tour place it is competition with Cambodia people so small Cambodia business or sellers street food will get less profit so they unhappy. in Thailand their police don't let foreigners sell street food or small businesses.

They go back home after the visa expires. Migrant workers are there because your gov't approved them. In Malaysia, my country, we have this too from Bangladesh, Indonesia and etc. Our gov't loves Muslims and their votes. They get to vote after getting citizenship. For them Malaysia is like 100 times better than their shitholes. P.S. Thailand had plenty of FDI from various countries, fyi.

The Chinese government has been in a good relationship with the country for so long that they allowed it as long as the cash flows in. I hate that fact, because it means that my country is going to a path of corruption similar to Hawaii. I can just see them forcing locals out for the big tourist attraction. My parents said that I'm too young to understand but I still want to help bring my country back to its former glory

China has always wanted to take over Thailand as a strategic site in Southeast Asia. However, Thai people are smart enough and they barelt borrow Chinese money. Thailand doesnt oew China any money right now. There are just some Chinese owned places in Thailand but it is still manageable. Since China cant take Thailand, the best places are Laos ans Cambodia. China intends to use Cambodia as a Thailand substitute. Its easy to take over Cambodia and use Thai cultures to promote the country. So Chinese tourists can go to Cambodia and support Chinese business instead. Since many Cambodians also love to claim Thai cultures as theirs because everyone around the world loves Thai cultures, this is so easy for China to manipulate Cambodians indirectly. This is why you see so many Cambodia claiming Thai cultures aggressively recently. Cambodian government will get so many benefits, Cambodian people on the other hand will suffer Khmer rogue 2.0 soon. This time, many Thai people will feel reluctant to help Cambodian refugees.

I don't understand why tourism and investment are bad for Cambodia or any country for that matter. Country the world over are chasing for tourist money and fdi so why Cambodia is different.

China is a huge country with lots of attractions and rich culture..... It would be hard to compete for tourists, and the local Govt can only try something proven (such as casino, Chinese restaurant).... For the locals as stake holder, it should be discussed with the local Govt and the tourist board as such!

I think it's a one-sided story. Sure, there would be a lot people like the person in this video, but more are people get tremendous profit from the Chinese tourists. Let's say before Chinese pour in, they sell 100 meals per day; when Chinese in, even not all Chinese eat the local food, but let's say 1/3 of Chinese eat local food, that means a lot more meals than 100 per day. Whatever the Chinese spend on Cambodian local owners are the net worth for this country including food, transport, hotel, gift, and clothes. Even the Chinese business has to pay a lot of tax to Cambodia which if the Chinese didn't pour in, none of this would happen.

Chinese tourists and corporation coming into the country is a great FDI, it creates job opportunities as well. the land owners and government are getting a huge amount of compensation from this. This video is inciting racial hatred and in most civilised countries would not be allowed. Chinese suffer living in Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and many other countries and it is wrong to incite hatred against the Chinese in Cambodia. Very bad! Ok this video may incite hatred but only to the chinese tourists and businessmen in cambodia. Do you read about cambodians making qualms about chinese in china? Also can you elaborate the suffering of CHINESE TOURISTS and CHINESE BUSINESSMEN in Cambodia. Ive never seen a tourists wanting to suffier abroad instead to rest and unwind. Ive never seen a business go to a new place just to make themselves poorer.

Of course Cambodian restaurants can’t compete with Chinese restaurants because eating raw fermented beetles, spiders, frogs, cockroaches isn’t exactly popular to the Chinese or anyone else. Of course the poor stay poor because they complain just like here, instead of competing. It’s their government’s problem, not Chinese people who are spending money in Cambodia. When Chinese spend less people complain they’re cheap, when spend top money people complain they’re ruining it for everyone else. What I know is no matter what one does, someone will complain.

The problem is that the Chinese tourism business operates in closed circuit, between Chinese, and does not sufficiently benefit the locals, not only in Cambodia. The Chinese are good businessmen, what they do is smart if you only take into account their point of view, from the point of view of the poor country, it looks more like economic colonization. Tourism is one of the sectors that even allows poor countries to bring in foreign currency, when in the end, they are not the beneficiaries ... yes they are the losers. This is what people are complaining about. In addition, the culinary specialties of a country are part of the trip, these arrangements deprive tourists of this discovery, all because the tour operator and the restaurant owners have a common business. Then, the remark on the dishes of Cambodia is unfair, there are many other dishes than what you quote ... But, I understood, it is just to be mean.
