The True Cost Of Turning Lakes Into Land In Cambodia | True Cost | Insider Business
Sand is the most exploited natural resource on earth, after water. In Cambodia, the government is using sand to fill in lakes around its capital, Phnom Penh, to create prime real estate for villas and shopping malls. Now, one community is fighting to save their homes on the city's largest natural lake.

Ashamed that we, Cambodians can't make a change and I'm glad that Insider is making a video about this because speaking out against what's happening is dangerous here.

I had no idea that people couldn't even own land until 2001!! I'm only 3min into the video and very glad I clicked on it, it's been on my recommended list for 3 weeks and I kept scrolling past it as I've never travelled further east than Montenegro. What happened in this country that went from living in a tradition way to destroying lakes locals rely on so much, to build luxury property? Who's buying the property, locals or immigrants from the west? Is the tourism growing this much?
@RikHendriksDutchCo

@@anabellepreis1920 that's hard to tell who's buying it. Foreigners can only buy property first floor and up. Or you need a company with a Khmer national and cannot own more than 49%. If I look at sihanoukville once a small seaside town, I can't believe my eyes. Same thing happened there. Now countless skeletons of unfinished large buildings are just standing there. The investors fled. In Phnom Penh a lot of condos are sitting empty. I can't wrap my head around it😕

Thank Insider for this documentary. As a Cambodian citizen, we can see clearly about what's happening. But the problem is, the freedom of expression in Cambodia has limited. Speaking out about the truth is a risk thing to do against the government. I hope to see more videos of The True Cost about Cambodia to be known more.

How many ashamed and apologetic governments have you witnessed?? They should be ashamed but never have and never will, so what's next? Holing someone will knock on your door and solve your problems or come up with a plan? The nature of people is such that no changes will be made unless their current situation is unbearable, and even then some are too lazy, have too many excuses, and end up accepting lower standards of already bad situation. That's why shwab said you will own nothing and be happy, he is counting on the majority to gradually accept living worse and worse.

Even here in the Netherlands (which should be developed by 'their' terms) we as a people are driven out of our lands and homes because of businesses plans, not to mention our farmers. Even though we are a different kind of people, we are the same, we need to fight our governments or we will face the same fate We will own nothing and 'be happy', but we won't be happy, we need to fight for our right.

That's because people kept allowing government interfere in every aspect of society! The speech has been altered to appease certain groups, even a definition of a woman has been changed officially vocabularies! Some pawn in a form of an awkward child pressed on feelings and people then convinced their governments to tax them into poverty to stop the sun from being hot! The ones that keep pushing the boundaries will keep doing so, unless a small percentage of people that see through all the lies do something. The most awful thing is, the majority of sheep that either see how messed up this is and do nothing because they're too lazy, too dependent on the system, or don't understand anything and believe the lies to the point where they start abusing anyone that doesn't agree with the narrative they're used to. Finally, I think it's time for each person to accept a simple fact - everything that's good and bad that happened is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY and only you can make it worse or better. Stop relying others, especially government that never has or will care about you, and start surrounding yourself with people with same values and goals, form a community and grow. I don't see any other way.

So glad to see Bong Rotha face again. He used to come to my coffee everyday before he got arrested. Love ur work.
Super cool!
No matter where it is, land grabbing from people is never just.
You should come to siem reap and cover the land disputes around Angkor wat at apsara…. Thousands have to leave soon for only $300 and a plot of land 40 mins away with no water and electricity
Eu acompanho sites de tratores e caminhoes que fazem esses aterramentos. Cambodja Construction e outros canais mostram todo dia esse trabalho. Sempre me perguntei por que eles fazem isso.
The elites in Cambodia holds many powers over the people. They can make things the way they want, and I can assume that the land that was mapped on the map that goes to the elites are just part of the city’s development. It’s a threat to the environment, but there’s nothing we can do. As a Cambodian who lives in Phnom Penh my self, seeing this is just horrific to watch. I always go to that lake, everytime I go there the land just keeps increasing in size. Government seizing property from people’s are just sad to watch. It’s a growing issue in Cambodia. We don’t have the rights to speak out, because if we do we’d me imprisoned. You need to hide the truth to survive out here…

Wherever encroachment happens, the nature will find its way course. There are many precedences in the past. The encroachers may be happy for the brief success, but at the time of monsoons they are going to suffer at the crazy level. 👍🏻 Don't worry, even fellow humans betray us but nature won't 👍🏻

Hello insider Business, thank you for the video. This is tragedies story. It just reminds me again of forcing Cambodians to relocate to somewhere in 1983. I thought they have a better life. People must have basic physiological essentials for survival such as place, basic medicine, food, water, oxygen, and nerve impulse. This is such a different world. I have seen the News, mostly all business and developer is a part of the 14K Triad, one of the largest Chinese organized crime in the world. US sanctions on transnational underworld activities to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. He runs highly profitable business empire across Hong Kong, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar etc.
If they wanted to protect their identity, why didn’t they blur the license plates? 5:41
The way these people live is part of the appeal of coming to this country. I wonder if they would do better to move to Louisiana? It sucks that developers are pushing people out of their native lands, and it sucks worse when they’re also takes their livelihood. Infinite, eminent domain.greedy bastards

Come to Lagos Nigeria and see that what's happening in Cambodia in the issues of sand mining along water ways is at low scale, real estate developers backed by the state has destroyed huge ecological life, forced relocation of indigenous people in that area and eventually destroyed the natural habitat of the water system.
There should definitely be economic development in the developing world - but there should also be protective measures in place to protect the environment and its inhabitants. This clash is a major problem in developing countries.
Thank you 🙏

Here is the problem of incompetent officials, instead of shifting the problems of settlers to business, officials have pinned these problems on the state. Do you want land? No problem - here is a list of people, they need a new place of residence, build them a house in a new place or give them a good plot. It is necessary to negotiate with these people independently. As soon as we make sure that you have solved the problems with the settlers, the lands are yours.

Phnom Penh needs to focus on the crime rate first if it wants to join the elite cities in south east Asia and Asia.
Feel terrible that people are marginalized this way. I’m happy videos like this are created. Just hope the right people get the message.

The leaks that government turning into land was a toxic black sewage waste water. Some leak are natureal but peoples there doesn't know how to protect the nature, They release dirty water, poops into the leaks. This is not a natural water that peoples can uses or make any farm on it. The leakes also created bad environment, bad smell and damage health of the peoples living around too. So the government have to do their job to make the development. I understand what "Insider Business" worring but They're make up story and pretending love the nature by mix fake story with true story. That's not a good way and i hated to see they're trying to spread fake news to the world.
When will the world rise up against the corporations?

Who needs water and the life it it brings when you can make more money?
I've been aware of the "sand timer" problem for a few years now, but I've never witnessed in such unleashed exploitative and vicious vision of capitalism. I try my best to believe that humanity is not strictly bound to good or evil, but when I when I see such unbridled robbery of the very sand and water which people have built their lives on for hundreds of years it really makes me scratch my head at the deeply problematic and saddening potentials of the greed of humanity. Can we please just start mining asteroids, watching this happen everywhere is too much for my tiny little mind to cope with or comprehend.
I'll activate my bankai to help
This is a road to the Future Sink Holes Crises...wait to see.
Mother nature will teach them that water has to go somewhere all this land will be flooded soon enough.

To build houses you need sand. Where will you get it from? Show me a place where sand mining does not have any consequences.
Mostly transport to Singapore.
Poor lady is just trying to provide shelter for her children but they just kick her out of her house
All those corrupted high ranking peoples are making their peoples suffering for their greed.
Sad situations, Soon there will be no more lakes.
I notice suffering for this country and people, is not over yet! After the bloody rule of the Khmers rouges, here people are again with threats to be evacuated from their land......as previously in the seventeenths! Nothing has changed! Poor people!

You should add rouges, after Khmers, though. That's just the name of the people, if you don't.
