Cam Swap | 650HP SR20VE Engine Conversion | SR86 EP 10 [

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

With the Kelford 184ST cams making more peak power than we ever expected, why would we swap them?
In this [BUILD] update Andre runs thought the reason why Nissan P12 Primera cams are being fitted to the SR20 along with how he expects this to see the VVL switch point drop from 6,750rpm to as low as 4,500-5,000rpm.
The new TiAL exhaust housing has now been fitted since we had it anyway, and some clearance and serviceability modifications were carried out now that we have the time in order to catch up on all the skipped little things that took a backseat during our push to get this all up and running to start with.
Disappointingly our head has come back once again with the same issue, but on the upside, this gives Andre the chance to explain why this is an issue at all and how it is something you need to consider whenever you reseat your valves in an engine running tight clearances. It's also great to be able to take a moment to check for these issues before hitting the track due to the more relaxed timeframe.
In other news the RaceCraft car is back up and running ready for the local Highlands Sprint Series at Highlands Motorsport Park, but after getting the front end sorted check out what happened to the rear end during a small racing incident in the next update on the RC86.

We should get Andre to have a wee chat about this one day as I had an interesting conversation about this with him in regards to his DOCILE drag car and the things he learnt from that for the latter DS9 build when it came to servicing - Taz.

    It'll be good to see a comparison of the torque curve with each set of cams, even though we know what to expect it's always interesting to see the actual results, especially how the peak power vs powerband tradeoff goes. Also interested to see the actual difference in turbo spool - though I guess that might also be affected by the change in turbine housing, even if the advertised A/R is the same

    And another cool, informative video - with all you chaps are doing, you're actually making great progress! Some of the 'little' jobs can end up taking massive amounts of time, like the plumbing changes that would need frequent checking for clearances, alignments, etc. When you were discussing the shim and cap heights still being a problem, you segwayed into it getting new camshafts. Did you consider getting them ground with a slightly smaller base circle? While it's not generally a good idea, especially with poorly done 'reground' products out there and the problem with hydraulic lifters running out of 'take up', it should have been fine with your mild camshafts and it would restore the clearance you needed for the shims and caps? Normally, the base circle is the 'fixed' part and all the adjustment, valve length, retainer heights, valve seat to retainer groove, etc, are all dependent on that?

    Yes, there may have been an improvement by advancing the cams. From my own experience as well as others who have played with the cam timing on the 184-ST t's unlikely we'd have been able to move the power band down by 1000+ rpm which is what we are targeting with just the cam timing. The P12 cam on the other hand has a few runs on the board showing it should do what we want. No disrespect to Kelford on this one, their cams are maybe just a bit too good! - Andre

    Why don't you grind the back end of the valve to reduce the installed height and run a larger shim?

  • @hpa101

    @hpa101

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, the valves can be 'tipped' but there's a limit to what can be removed before you go through the surface hardening. While tipping the valve would allow a thicker shim for the same lash clearance which could potentially engage deeper into the retainer, the relationship between the lip of the retainer and the top of the shim doesn't change for a given valve installed height and lash clearance. Basically any time the valve seats are cut this moves the valve deeper into the head (even if it's only a few thou) which means the retainer lip also moves higher relative to the cam base circle - Andre
