While growing up, Calvin's imagination always kept him sane. He didn't have many friends, so he created one. As he got older, he tried to leave childish things behind. But his imagination had a different plan.
This is a fan-made trailer devoted to our favorite comic strip. We are deliberately not monetizing the video in honor of Bill Watterson.

    I actually love the little nods to the original comic, like Calvin having to put on a tie and imagining himself being hanged, the dinosaur chasing him, the really gross-looking dinner coming alive and fighting him. While I wouldn't necessarily want this to be a real movie, I think the trailer is neat. Once it doesn't go anywhere further than just a trailer, I'm pretty much behind this.

    I thought this was going to be some sad story about adult Calvin struggling to let go of the past or something stupid like that, but this is actually a pretty interesting concept. His own imagination warping reality would be a neat idea for a movie. And I absolutely love the references to the comics. The plane and the train flying at Calvin, holy cow

    *I know this is a joke, but I could see a more serious take on Calvin and Hobbes actually working. Something like how Where the Wild Things Are was handled: a story about a boy coping with his real life problems by escaping into his imagination.*

    Agreed, but I'd add that it should follow the trailer's storyline. Make the fantasies of Calvin's head manifest in the real world, have Hobbes be kidnapped by Calvin's unconscious and then Calvin has to go a metaphysical journey inside his own head to save him, have Suzy in tow for the adventure as well as developing some post-strip characterization for her and Calvin, the Transmogrifier should be the device that's causing all this to happen.

    I didn't like the Where the Wild Things Are movie. In the book he escapes being punished to an island of his making. it resides within him and houses his ego. therefore all the wild things that howl with him there should be male as they are all him in essence. so in the movie some of the Wild Things are female and the Things have fights like they are a married couple, that is exactly what the Things don't do in the book, they cheer and howl and have a good time on their island away from the things of man. so I like the book but not the movie

    @@srv3355 You can't "ruin" something by doing an alternate take on it. The comic doesn't magically disappear. If that were true, then, I'm sorry to tell you, but, Calvin and Hobbes has already been "ruined". By Robot Chicken... And yes, despite your shitty, sarcastic attitude, a great live-action series of Calvin and Hobbes that balances Calvin's real life with his imaginary one, could be a very engaging story for young and old viewers. Depends on how it's done, of course.

    The lack of merchandising for Calvin & Hobbes is what helps keep the magic alive for the comic strip. At the end of the day it is Bill Watterson's creation, and he decides what does or doesn't happen with it. this is such a rarity in our capitalistic society and I respect him for holding his ground. Alternate mediums are just a interpretation of the comic's art and storytelling and good never truly hold a candle to the original concept. I am glad that the original art, story, idea is being preserved.

    It's a common misconception that Hobbes is a figment of Calvin's imagination. He's not. In one of the Calvin and Hobbes treasuries (I forgot which) Bill Waterson even says that Hobbes is not imaginary, and also saying that Hobbes doesn't just turn into a toy when someone other than Calvin is around. Waterson said that some people see the world one way and some people see it another. In this case, people see Hobbes one way and Calvin sees him another. Not only that, but in some stories Hobbes does things that Calvin was unable to do. When Calvin wanted to imitate Houdini, Hobbes contributed by tying Calvin up. In another story, Calvin and Hobbes secede from Calvin's household and eventually make their way into the woods. They get into an argument about who should be the leader and Hobbes storms off into a part of the woods that Calvin is unfamiliar with. Calvin goes home and a few hours later, tries to find Hobbes with great difficulty. A recurring gag in the strip is that Hobbes sleep walks and occasionally Calvin follows. If that's not enough for you, in the first ever Calvin and Hobbes strip, it's shown that Calvin did not invent Hobbes, but capture him and the next strip shows Calvin having Hobbes eat tremendous amounts of food, misunderstanding his dad's joke to "stuff" any tiger he finds.

    I don't want a Calvin and Hobbes movie or cartoon for one simple reason: Bill Watterson explicitly said he doesn't want it to become one. It's just fine in comic book form, so please leave it that way. This was a nice tribute, and I'm just saying this in response to everyone who thinks this would actually be a good movie to come out. If you really love his work, you should respect his wishes.

    As i have watched the documentary Dear Mr. Watterson i know there will never be a C&H movie or any licensed merchandise. saddening though it may be...C&H has stood the test of time with only a comic book strip to really remember it by...genius really...he denied the people of what they wanted so to keep pure his work of being watered down and sullied...bold move yet the man himself has become as his works...a memory...long since out of the spotlight...one day...all that will remain is who he was...what he did...and tale of a boy and his friend.

    yea any sort of film/adaptation with today's money focused film industry would kill Wattersons view on the beautiful mind of a 6 year old. though my one guilty desire is for the Hobbes and Bacon (Calvins daughter) strip to become an actual licensed cartoon strip- its kinda sweet and the illustrations, writing, and spirit are almost spot on to the original.

  • @libraryham
    @libraryham7 жыл бұрын

    If Waterson were to give his approval, this should totally be made into a movie. I really like the idea, Calvin growing up, yet his imagination still runs wild, and even threatens to ruin him and take away his best friend Hobbes. This would make a great movie, I'd pay to see it. I have doubts Waterson would approve though. Im just not sure he would be interested or comfortable seeing his work used in such a way. I like the comic, but many times, I thought Calvin was too adult. It was nicer to see his more childlike aspects. That's what the comic to me was. It's about a boy with a wild and creative imagination, with an imaginary tiger friend. Seeing his imagination run wild was better than anything more deliberately philosophically related, which the average 6 year old likely wouldn't understand. Subtle use of philosophy is ok though. This is only my opinion. If you disagree with me, that's ok, I'm glad you can see something from a different perspective. It makes the world interesting. Still, awesome video. Here's hoping for a real video with this plot.

    Wow, this is pretty awesome. Of course it wouldn't really be fit to make this a real movie... but this, as an imaginary trailer, is great, and perfectly in-universe.

    Agreed. A Calvin movie can't answer any questions for certain, or it violates the spirit of the strip.

    Calvin & Hobbes were such a big part of my childhood. They expanded my vocabulary, my concepts of philosophy, and my repertoire of jokes. They were very, very dear to me. Thus, I was very skeptical of a gritty reboot, but this video won me over. I love the idea! I know not all C&H fans will like it, but I can definitely see the same ideas of philosophy and imagination carrying over into a new, more mature, emotional mindscape like this, aging along with the people who fell in love with the comics as children. Thank you!
