Callen Schaub Abstract Painter Interview

Produced and directed by Roadtrip Media @roadtripmedia
Callen Schaub is an abstract artist most recognized
for his unconventional techniques, live performances,
and frank openness about his process and life as an
artist. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Schaub
has been performing live trapeze, spin and pendulum
paintings for nearly a decade.
In his early childhood, Schaub was diagnosed with
dyslexia, a learning difficulty that affects the skills
involved in reading and spelling. Challenged by this
communications barrier, Schaub began painting and
drawing as a medium for self-expression, exploring
art as a more universal method of communication.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Drawing
& Painting from OCAD University in 2012, Schaub
co-founded Project Gallery, a gallery and studio
space that hosts live performances and exhibitions
for emerging contemporary artists. Project Gallery
was voted “Best Independant Gallery in Toronto”
in 2015 by NOW Magazine in their annual Reader’s
Choice awards.
In 2016, Schaub relinquished his managerial role
at Project Gallery in order to launch his full-time
art studio, where he began to debut larger-scale
production and video integration, and expand the
performative aspects of his art. By focusing on the
raw emotion and visceral nature of his medium,
Schaub challenges traditional art-to-canvas painting
and seeks to redefine how people appreciate and
interpret ‘art’.
Schaub has performed more than 120 live shows
across Canada and over 10 solo exhibitions, charming
audiences across North America with ‘The Arena’
- his portable studio comprised of self-made spin
machines, pendulums and trapezes. Schaub’s
unconventionally open approach to art-making
echoes his belief that “artwork is a process, not a
secret” and encourages spectators to participate
in the experience of motion, colour, energy, and
anticipation.
In recent years, Schaub has developed a substantial
social media presence, with millions of views, shares
and comments, as well as hundreds of high-profile
commissions from all over the world. He has gained
considerable national and international recognition
working with a number of prominent brands and
events, including Bombay Sapphire, Callaway Golf,
Grolsch, TIFF, YSL, PanAm Games, and many others.
His first U.S. solo exhibition, Unfazed, was hosted by
Joseph Gross Gallery of Los Angeles in August 2018,
and he plans to continue growing his international
influence by kicking-off a global tour in 2020 with
live performances across the United States.

I hate people who disqualify abstract art with absolutely no art knowledge or schooling or experience. As someone who's training as a traditional artist, I have such respect for abstract artists. There are so many other things that go into creating a piece than just spinning a canvas or slathering paint on some linen. There's composition, color theory, and intent just as there is in realism, impressionism, or surrealism.

Love your art! Some people just don’t understand that abstract art is not as easy as we make it look . They have no idea of how many fails you have. It may look like you’re just throwing paint on a canvas but there is a lot more to it. You have to have an eye for balance and color. So hey you’re having fun and making money. I’m glad you don’t let the haters stop you.

Callen, that piece of insight was so well said! As a fellow abstract artist with my own random cannibalized machines as well as my own river of paint I can say with certainty that it's not that easy. At least you're brave enough to put yourself out there. You don't allow the haters to squash your artistic breath! I use the word "breath" to make the point that creating an abstract piece of art is truly a life engaging experience! Keep spinning!! Leaf~

Well said, color is cleansing to the soul, much like music, singing and dancing. There are a lot of us paint pouring people out here without the wonderful tools you have created but who love how the paint plays and reacts. Thanks for the encouragement. PS/ I am 69 and have done traditional drawing, so can reproduce what is seen visually.

I respect you a lot and admire you as an artist. Creative, smart ans always exploring. May I ask you; how do you mix your acrylic paints? do you have some sort of a "recipe" for such a mix? Other artists use poring mediums, Floetrol, even Elmer's Glue as well as water. Do you do so?
