We are super thrilled to introduce you to our next ArtResin Featured Artist ... Callen Schaub!
Callen Schaub is a contemporary abstract artist with an unconventional twist on spin art. His technique involves paint, natural forces and mechanical devices he made himself: a canvas spinner made from bicycle parts, swinging paint troughs and paintcan pendulums.
When art and science collide, the results are nothing short of fantastic - vibrant, explosive canvases that literally capture motion and energy.
Callen's colourful work explores the relationship between stillness and movement, between chaos and control, art and physics, artist and nature. As the artist, he may set the creative process in motion but, in fact, the forces of nature are what truly dictate the end result.
ArtResin's Rebecca, Patty, Jeff and Pat were so lucky to have spent some time with Callen at his Toronto studio to watch him in action ( his techniques themselves being performance art ) and to chat with him about creating his work, listening to it and, ultimately, letting it go.
Enjoy
:)

How beautifully expressive and inspirational you are. To know how to create AND advance an elevated creative dialogue out into the path of those who can be affected and moved by it is truly the most precious of artistic gifts. Thank you.

Wow! So cool Callen! I was just think about how would you expand your process next? Maybe you could make like trebuchet like machine, that you could load up the paint, and throw it at the canvas. Except the the trebuchet could be made out of bicycle parts, that would some how make enough tension . I'm seeing a gaint wooden cog and a crank shaft, that would be wound up like a coil of a spring, for the tention. That's where the bicycle part comes in. Maybe the wheel could also work as the cog. But you could use the higher gear to wind the coil up, instead of need 4 really big dudes. Of course if would have to be small enough that it wouldn't hit the ceiling, in your studio. But theirs some food for thought. Also what type of paint do you use? I love how it flows and the vibrancy of it all! Your such an inspiration! Thank you Callen for your giant leap of faith! Jesus Loves you so much! Amen!

I know my question doesn’t pertain to this video in particular but I was curious about how to resin movie tickets? I’m worried if I just glue them down and pour resin that the ink might fade- is there a certain varnish that could work before applying resin? Thanks in advance

Hi there - if the tickets are printed on thermal paper ( like some store receipts are ) you might have a problem on 2 counts: the images fades like crazy on thermal paper ( like looking at an old receipt and you can't see the numbers anymore ) Additionally, the resin warms up when it's mixed, so the heat from the resin will cause the thermal paper to go black. If the movie tickets are not thermal, then absolutely, you can mount them onto a solid backing ( canvas board, wood panel etc ) and seal them first ( a spray sealant or a brush on sealant ... something that dries clear and won't yellow ) and then resin them!!

Building on what artResin said, I would take a picture of the movie tickets, print, and resin that. I know it's not the same, but at least you know it would last.

Hi, you can use some water to dilute your acrylic paint. Add a little at a time until you reach your desired consistency :) If you're looking for specific ratios, we recommend asking your local art store or the manufacturer of your favourite acrylic paint.
