Call Between Alexey Navalny and FSB Officer Konstantin Kudryavtsev [English Subtitles]

Full call between Navalny and one of the FSB officers in the team to trail and eventually poison him, Konstantin Kudryavtsev.
Before the publication of our recent joint investigation into the FSB officers involved in the operation to poison him in Tomsk, Navalny decided to call two members of the poison squad, Mikhail Shvets and Konstantin Kudryavtsev, by impersonating a senior security official. To both of these officers, Navalny introduced himself as a fictional character: Maxim Ustinov, an “aide to [Chairman of Russia’s Security Council] Nikolai Patrushev”. The premise of the call was that Navalny - playing the role of “Maxim Ustinov”, would ask the officers for an oral report on the reasons for the failure of the Navalny poisoning operation.
Over forty minutes, Kudryavtsev answered questions from Navalny -- whose voice he didn't recognize -- regarding the failed operation.

If you paid attention to the content you would have picked up that this guy didn’t try to kill anyone. He was poisoned in Tomsk and he landed sick in Omsk. When that happened and he was rushed to the hospital, this gentleman and a small team went to the hospital, was delivered Navalny’s clothes, Konstantine and the team took the clothes and cleaned them so there would be no trace of poison. They performed this task twice. He was not in on the poisoning aspect and that’s why he could not speak to those aspects. I wish Putin would hire me to be a spy in Russia. I’d be so much better than this. I couldn’t spy against America but other countries, let’s go.

Hi, Ben, thank you for the kind words about the translation overall. I was wondering about “запасом” myself, but I assume he means that they were provided with a certain quantity from the Chemical Weapon Institutes, and he was trying to shift the blame on them. You may be right, however, if an opportunity arrises for a new rendition I will think about it more thoroughly. Thank you again, Yordan :)

This is brilliant, and I'm laughing all the way through it, but, on a more serious note, what I'm seeing is that the beaurocracy is the one thing to survive the Soviet Union. You get someone from "the bureau" or "the party council" on the phone and it doesn't take much beyond a few thinly veiled polite threats to intimidate someone into spilling the tea. And Navalny used that against him in his efforts to bring all of it down. This guy is crafty as hell and was born with a bit of the spirit of Coyote in him.

You can never exclude a false flag op, but this sounds pretty genuine to me. Agents are trained not to leak to the outside world. Once you can convince someone you're with or above them, the story gets way different. This is simply an example of brilliant social engineering. Note that the caller rarely puts credentials forward directly. He just talks by continuously enumerating familiar names and details, while the other party increasingly assumes he cannot but be aware of all the facts and be way above his head, and is therefore willing to omit some basic protocol steps. This case of what could happen is going to end up in intelligence services schoolbooks.

Much more dangerous now : An oligarch and henchmen's been in charge for a long time, addicted to power and money...with a limitless global reach and NO second thoughts about destroying their own countrymen /women and the globe in order to keep it. Russia has been a gas station with nuclear weapons for a while now. What the F... do they actually create anymore? People are starving there. Brilliant, brave people. Putin & co does nothin but hacking, espionage, disinformation and stealing. ...And trump ( + his goons) are wannabe Putins.

Even in the height of the cold war, both US and Soviet operatives did hilariously stupid mistakes, though perhaps not as often as the FSB.
