Pelé began playing for Santos at age 15 and the Brazil national team at 16. During his international career, he won three FIFA World Cups: 1958, 1962 and 1970, the only player to do so. On 29 June 1958, Pelé became the youngest player to play in a World Cup final match at 17 years and 249 days. He scored two goals in that final as Brazil beat Sweden 5-2 in Stockholm, the capital.

The problem with assessing Pele's greatness is the small amount and poor quality film available. I'm old enough to have seen him play several times, and he was truly impressive. Most contemporary players (ie the last 30 or so years) have one or two specialist skills or personal techniques that made them stand out from all the rest - but Pele had them all. There is a video on YT that I came across recently that showed all the greats special skills: Zidane had this, Cruyff had that, Maradona had the other and so on , a dozen or so of the all time greats. Then this vid shows Pele (albeit in very old and grainy black and white fil) doing ALL these fantastic moves 50 to 60 years ago. Messi is the only one who comes close. Modern technology makes apreciation and admiration of star players so much easier these days - but Pele was the real GOAT.

Football was different in Pele's and Maradona time and lot of clips of both are available. Pele was great in his time,, but football was better in Maradona time. If u watch individual highlights of both ,,Pele is nothing close to Diego in World Cups. The videos of all WC are clear and available and we can see Pele was one of best,Diego was clearly best. In 62 he didn't even play, with 70 arguably greatest team ever and 58 too with a great team

In world football players mostly mastered one position and maybe 2 at most. Some players do change position and show some success for it and some don't cause you usually develop this trait and awareness in your early years on a specific position. Rooney was a striker during his younger years and switched to a midfielder later on cause it requires less running and he showed some success doing it despite the two position completely needs different sets of skills. Joelinton of Newcastle United did the same recently and he's actually a better midfielder than he is a striker. So what Alfredo di Stefano did was absolute bonkers, not only he played all position but he was actually GOOD in all position.

People tend to keep one position, and if they do change - it tends to be in their early career. Because positions are getting more and more specialised. Where as before there was just "midfielder", now there are defensive midfielder, 10s, wingers, box-to-box midfielders, and many more with their own job to do. Back in the 50s (not to dismiss the players from that era), before the offside rule was implemented and before substitutes were allowed, then players had to be able to fill more roles.

Maradona’s ‘hand of god’ was against England, we still hate him 36 years later.

There are a lot of players whom switched positions in their career(or can play in several positions if it's recquired) in football.(Lizarazu famous full back whom was in attack, Henry played full back in Milano, etc...)

This is a very debatable top 10 list. Though it’s not too bad. The best top 100 list is done by the HTTC Sevens channel. I’d have liked to see Romario, Michael Laudrup, and Zico here. Nice to have di Stefano there. I defiantly don’t have zidane in my top 10 though. That HTTC channel had him mid twenties. And then made an entire dedicated video defending that choice. Romario and Zico rank higher for sure.

When it comes to positions I think it's important to understand the difference between position and role. People might change position on occasion but their role in the team would still be nearly the same. Their "stats" don't necessarily change a lot, it's just that say, having good vision and passing can be done from more than one position. The guy playing center in one team and on the right in another might basically have the same toolkit of skills. Liverpools right back(defender), Alexander Arnold, is more of a playmaker that goes for a lot of assists. The team is obviously made to make this possible with a central midfielder covering for him as he runs down the flanks. And sometimes that person is found more centrally. Kevin De Bruyne is an attacking midfielder, sometimes plays as a deep attacker. But he's still a playmaker. His job being the provide assists. Changing roles is of course a lot harder. If you were the bulldog getting the ball of opponents in midfield that does not mean you're a person with vision or good passing necessarily. Yet another team might have a playmaker playing in that position instead of a good defender(role, not position) But this would mean that the defending has to come from somewhere else. In football manager you occasionally get a player and you check his stats. This person might be familiar with 2 positions. But you notice that his stats are amazing for another position, and so you train him until he's good in that position. But even in this game, similar to real life, you can not just train a person until he's good in a certain role. You can steer it. But not change direction completely.(basically you can add 3-5 at most to a certain stat so that 15 year old with 7 passing is never going to have 16 passing) That ballwinning midfielder with 10/20 passing and 11/20 vision is never going to be a good playmaker in the highest leagues.

If you go by World Cups, many would be better than Maradona. I go by the ability of the player. Pele is a bit overrated and lives mostly off his legend. Maradona was the better player overall. There's a reason Maradona was chosen over Pele as player of the century by FIFA.

Pele isn't the GOAT. His whole reputation goes down to winning the Worldcup three times but no player can win a tournament on his own. Brazil won the Worldcup even without him when he was injured after the first groupstage game. They simply had an superior squad back then. He also never played in Europe and scored all his goals in the brazilian and American lige and both aren't comparable to european competiton. Messi is number one for the simple fact that he's the only playmaker who competes with the topscorers of the sport at the same time. He's unique and the most complete attacking player we ever saw.

Brazil with all local players won 3 World cups against european teams, players from Europe like Altafini and Amarildo, Jair da Costa were all bench warmers but starts in Europe and Italy. South American sides in the 60s won 6 Intercontinental cups compared to Europe’s 3 or 4. Europe only started to get superior to South American football after the Bosman rule which started in the mid 90s.

Messi is not a playmaker, he’s a creator a forward who only distributes the final ball. A playmaker is someone like Maradona, Cruyff, Di Stefano. Messi is not the most complete attacker ever, could he head? shoot with both feet? lacks the improvisation in his strongest skillset. Pelé is the most complete offensive player in history.

I said most complete attacking player, not most complete goalscorer. He only has his left foot and still scores more than all these so called "complete" goalscorer. Pele played against butchers without any tactical knowledge. Todays defenders are stronger, faster and have a much better tactical understanding.

Don’t listen to this video, trust me. Messi is the clear number 1, Ronaldo is the very very clear number 2. After that people can argue about Pele, Maradona, Zidane, the other Ronaldo and Cruyff for 3rd and so on. Messi has the greatest goalscoring in history paired with the greatest Assisting in history. He dominates basically every important statistic and can back it up with his accolades. Most Ballon dors (like the Oscar for the best player that year), most golden boots (most goals that year), most playmaker awards (best passing and stuff), most Man of the Match awards, and after this season he’s probably gonna be tied for the most trophies won by any player with 43! You gotta check out Videos like "the Messi era", "Footballs greatest genius", or "The Goat". I find your reactions to be very genuine and you actually seem interested in this sport, so it would interest me to see how you’re gonna react to some of Messi’s indescribable performances :)

I feel that you’re now severely underrating him. He was the first international superstar of football and revolutionised the attacking style of feint dribbling. Also, those who watched him play and watch Ronaldo and Messi say that he was a perfect mix of both. The athleticism and determination of Ronaldo with the dribbling and swiftness of Messi. Just because he’s not your GOAT doesn’t mean he isn’t a GOAT so don’t disrespect a legend.

Also, Messi and Ronaldo have also been surrounded by great players too, so that argument against Pelé is invalid. In fact, Messi was part of the greatest football team ever assembled!
