The song makes me cry. Few years down the road, I am revisiting this song "California" over a rainy day in Ottawa. I remember when I heard it the first time; I felt like Lana was my best friend comforting me. The song feels like a big warm hug to those suffering from depression in relationships. As a matter of fact, I was so inspired by it that I wrote and created a short film called "Tears of Oizys" that talks EXACTLY about what Lana is singing about in her song California. "i shouldn've done it but i read it in a letter.." - they say that lana didn't break up with barrie in a best way (i think he found out that lana ended it over interview) "if you can go back to california just hit me up" - barrie is scotish, so he's not american... "your favorite liquor on a top shelf" - barrie had depression in a times when he was dating lana and he was drinking a lots in that time also black beauty, is this happiness and maybe even more songs are about lana's ex barrie. california is beautful, sad song. and the behind story behind california - it makes it even sadder.

The part, "Santa Ana moves you" is a small neighborhood in California. Her lover wasn't American, he was an immigrant and guess what? Santa Ana is mostly populated by immigrants. From the lover who saw their struggle in a foreign country and to her, who paid attention to all his feelings. If this is not empathy full of love I don't know what is.
