California college students experiencing homelessness speak out

College can be stressful with studying and meeting deadlines, but some students are struggling with a different issue: housing. Federal data shows more than 1.5 million U.S. college students are homeless. CBS News producer Sarah Svoboda shows how some California State University students are dealing with it.

@@Blue_Star_flyer Good for you... Not everyone is cutout for the medical field. Also I come from a really broken family full of poverty and problems. My single mother lost our home right as I was graduating high school, then my first two jobs went bankrupt while still owing me unpaid wages, then my mother died of cancer, and I had to go back to live in my long lost transgendered father's kitchen, without any personal space or privacy... Hardly conclusive since there are few developers lining up to build working class homes in college towns. Where’s the incentive when they make more money building McMansions? Also, I don’t know what you mean by working class homes anyway. In my college town, 3br 2ba homes are sold for 1.2 million. And you’re right. California has a problem with homes, homeowners, and home availability. Homeowners think that if they spend 1.2 million dollars on their house, they have a right to quash development projects that threaten the neighborhood “quaintness” and of course, if there are more properties, then their home values won’t appreciate as much. They call themselves liberal environmentalists but they aren’t. They are just typical boomers sponging off of Prop 13.

15 years ago, I was a homeless student at UC San Diego. I paid $250 monthly to sleep in a walk-in closet and didn't even have a key to the apartment. This is not homelessness. It seems the issue is more about where these students can park and for how long. These students live in RV's, and there is nothing wrong with that. This lifestyle is a choice. I personally choose to live this way to be liberated from the stress of paying rent or a mortgage, along with increasingly high bills. It's a simpler lifestyle, but it is not for everyone. I am a minimalistic person who prioritizes my happiness. I've lived in all kinds of properties during my lifetime, even luxury properties, and I found myself so unhappy because it made me feel stuck or trapped. I enjoy feeling free from that and the toxic environment it can be to live in a typical neighborhood.

If you have a choice to go for the RV lifestyle, I'm all for it. Yes, you lived in an RV, but if your RV broke down or the parking situation in your area was untenable for your situation, you had an alternative to go to. But these students don't have that choice and that means they're constantly under the sword of Damocles of parking tickets, accidentally parking in a high-crime part of town, your RV breaking down, and having nowhere to go.

I just finished my degree at a Cal-State. Worked my way through school as to not seek handouts from the school or from others. It’s possible, if you’re willing to put in the work. Did this all without the help of Fafsa or financial aid. Even managed to play sports on my days off. Students at California State colleges don’t have it easy, but it’s not impossible. Now that I’m graduated, I’m not staring at loads of student loan debt BECAUSE I was able to work and pay it off while attending school. School isn’t a right but a privilege. A privilege granted to those who are willing to sacrifice and manage their time, money, and energy toward a degree that nowadays, holds less weight than it used to in the job market. If I had a to run it back, I wouldn’t have spent all that money and time and instead invested in trade school that’s cheaper and provides access to more jobs after graduation.

It's messed up that the college is willing to accept the students'payment for tuition, but not allow them to park on campus. Every student is required to have their vehicle registered with the college in order to receive a parking permit; therefore, the college would be able to easily identify if a camper/van/bus parked on campus belonged to a student or just some other random homeless person, if they really felt the need to police the situation; they could easily shoo off those who weren't actually attending classes at that college, or any other college for that matter, in order to keep the overnight parking to a minimum. It seems to me that the real issue for the college (s), is that, aside from being a "business" like any other, whose sole purpose is to make money, not necessarily educate, is that they don't want to endure a bad reputation for being an institution that charges exorbitant costs so that students cannot afford to go to school and keep a standard living situation at the same time. They care more about what this says about them as an institution rather than the well-being of the students. And/or, they would rather the students pay even more money on "student housing", than have the students living in their vehicles. In fairness to the institution however, as a former college student and college employee, I can see where the college might be concerned about liability issues if they do not have overnight security patrolling the campus. I do know however what it's like to have become homeless while attending college and having to finish out a semester while living in my car, motels, and eventually the shelter-it's difficult. I can only say that the major issue we face as a culture as it relates to this topic, aside from the high cost of education, is the outrageous cost of living as it pertains to affordable housing for all.

Just like colleges have dorms, why can't colleges provide a parking spot that's well lit with a bathroom building with showers included for the students. These students pay expensive tuition to attend the college so why can't this be done. Times are changing, students can't afford expensive form fees or expensive student apartments. Why can't colleges go with the changes and help these students who are living in there cars?

yeah i don't see why they don't let that. They could keep only college students that have this situation regulated by making it mandatory for minimum units. This is the same way FASFA awards students how much is based on if they're part time or full time, thus the rule isn't used inappropriately. I would recommend only csu or uc's as community college would be harder to do.

The root cause of these homelessness issue is very simple. Not enough housing. Why do we not have enough? Because people make it difficult to build. They will protest, delay, pass all kinds of laws to prevent new housing development. There is plenty of storage facilities, those have no issue getting built, but if you want to build an apartment complex of the same size in the same area, the neighbors will do everything to block it. We have plenty of vacant commercial space, lots of big box stores and malls shutdown, plenty of parking lots and parking structures mostly empty for years and years. Why can't we build there. Because of zoning laws and minimum parking requirements.

Its painful to hear and read tge pain in the comments. Not sure how to say this, as it may sound judgemental, but taking the chance as i feel it can help Very recently came across a channel 'satya speaks' in that he talks about how we ( our mind, may be due to circumstances, childhood, or various reasons) holds some beliefs and then we project it to the screen of life. And we try to change the image on the screen, not realizing that as long as what we are projecting doesn't change the image cannot change. Say the belief we hold maybe i am not lucky, or not worthy, or life is hopeless etc. the tough part is mostly we will have valid reasons that explains our beliefs, but try replacing it with the opposite positive thought . Depending on ones inclination one can pick a positive activity say prayers, reading, writing, listening, chanting etc, especially some chant, prayer, or positive thought can be repeated for sometime siting quietly , so that when negative thoughts or situations happen thise words can be repeated in the mind , use it for diverting focus towards positivity . Also do whatever is in your power to better things, even if you cant see the map forward try doing the one next step. Feel and hold the belief you have help and you deserve goodness, no matter if you have done things or have upbringing that makes your mind believe otherwise, replace the projection in your mind to positive beliefs, keep at it so that minds focus is always diverted to the positive. Whether prayer or chant etc need to be with full focus not doing manually with mind floating into other thoughts, worries etc. soon you will detect and replace negative thoughts with these positive thoughts and/ or actions and there is no ground for negative things to grow inside you, even when life or people throws it at you. This is not said to say your thoughts brought you the negativities in your life, rather may be the medicine for the challenge can be this. Similar to how one takes a medicine to come out of a disease, even though not taking the medicine was not the reason why one got the disease.
