@@Lonesomedrifter54 -- So interesting!
This film was most likely taken before the March 12, 1928 collapse of the St. Francis Dam northwest of the city, which sent a wave of water that devastated much of the town.

There are any number of 1928/9 Model A Fords in the film. Look closely.... So it was after that. 3:05 theres a model A Sedan Delivery..... says a lot trying to date this.... look again at 0:27 a Model A cabriolet there parked on the right..... Lots of clues here.... This part of town shows no flood damage.......

Good call! From Wikipedia: "The town was first hit by the waters at approximately 3:00 a.m. Though hundreds of homes and structures were destroyed, the loss of life would have been greater if it were not for two motorcycle police officers that noisily warned as many people as possible. A sculpture called "The Watchers" in downtown Santa Paula depicts this act of heroism."

@@caroltenge5147 My hunch is that it was taken before. I have seen film in the aftermath of the flood, and even in areas of the city that were relatively undamaged there were refugee centers, Red Cross centers, and makeshift soup kitchens for the dispossessed. Life in this film seems too orderly and normal to be after a major disaster that killed hundreds of residents.
Thankyou Nass for putting together these blasts from the past. My dad if he were alive, would have loved to have seen these. He was born in the 20s. Thanks again and greetings from australia🇦🇺

Hi! Thx!!
I drive through Santa Paula occasionally, which made this all the more delightful. Loved seeing regular folk on errands, and the high school students at the end.
It never fails to amaze me how well dressed everyone in these old videos are.

My grandparents and other relatives came to Santa Paula in the early 20's. It was and still is a beautiful city.
Notice the full-service station gravity flow gas "pumps" at 5:17. They functioned where the attendant pumped by hand the gasoline into the visible, round, glass tank (above the pump handle) to the requested gallons listed inside the tank and then he let it flow by gravity into the customer's car.

That's an interesting system that I didn't understand before. My Dad told me he tried making a fish tank out of an old glass fuel pump when he was a kid and that even though he washed it out very well the fish quickly died.
Many of the buildings are still there, I recognized almost all of them. Isbell school looked better with brick than now painted white with stucco. Cool to see the town 100 years ago.
Thank you for making these video's.

Just my observation starting from at around 7:00 People move slow. They take their sweet time doing stuff, not in a hurry not “on a mission”, just chill. Just take a look at how they walk and interact w/ each other. Very calm, almost hazed? They stand close to each other “invading personal space”… lots of touching, taping on shoulders etc. thanks for sharing!
All of this people are died... strange feelings! But it`s really wonderful look to the past..
Great video!
Nass, Another fabulous video. Picture is so clear also! Some shots at 3:25 and others show regular people around town, seems like people we would know. Like it wasn't 100 years ago. Thanks for the upload.

This one was very fascinating and a bit creepy to watch. From people's faces morphing, to kids that seem like they are gliding on air when they walk. With how old this film was, you had to work with what you got and to make it at 60fps and remastering it no less... you did the best you could do. Simply amazing. Keep them coming Nass. Awesome work!

I'll look for
Look at their footsteps as they walk. Strange movements. Looks as though they’re gliding over the ground. 😳
They don't look like people from another time, nor from another space. They look like another species....
A wonderful glimpse at everyday life in small town Southern California. It’s hard to reconcile that all those happy and carefree kids have likely passed on by now. Any who are still with us are in their 100s
A lot of the shots are clearly planned and choreographed, and seem to focus on clothing, including work uniforms, of people coming out of shops, schools, workplaces. I'm puzzled as to the original purpose of these clips---someone just filming for documentary purposes or maybe a Chamber of Commerce-type promotional for the town? Given the almost unnaturally pristine look of much of the clothing, you'd almost think it was promo for a clothing store, laundry, or dry-cleaning business!

People at that time dressed up even for what we would think of as casual activities. What you see would have been the norm for people going around town and at school at that time. Dressing casual as we do today didn’t begin till around the 60s-70s.
What were the streets made of. Perfectly flat and black.

I think they are advertising scenes from the 1920s because the scenes were combined and rehearsed in front of stores and schools.

Not a pothole in sight. This is the last time California had smooth roads.
The mailbox is the wrong color. Blue boxes started appearing after the post office became the USPS in 1971. It should be deep olive green of the USPO department.

The idea that only modern Americans get fat is false. In general I think people were pretty slim but you will find overweight people in all eras.
@megansfo
Ай бұрын
The dresses of that period were loose and sacklike, and in light colore would make even normal sized women look larger than they were. And the camera adds weight. There have always been overweight people, just not as many as today.
@TopHotDog

@@tobystamps2920if you consider "chunky" people to be overweight, you are wrong. Such people have a sturdier frame and are NOT overnight.
The AI video is a warped mess. I’d much rather see the original in black and white at the very most stabilized. This is borderline unwatchable, but maybe because I’m a 66 year old curmudgeon who’s been doing photography and videography for 40+ years.

The colorization sucks as usual...if period footage was filmed in black and white keep it black and white...what's the point in changing it...artificial color adds absolutely nothing to this footage; in fact, the only thing it does is destroy the resolution.
