  • @asuka7309

    @asuka7309

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Stephen braden Tortuga is a tiny island off the coast of Hispaniola that was so insignificant that the Spanish never bothered to seriously settle it or even have a permanent military presence there. Pirates build the entire island up from the ground and it was the centre of piracy for over 4 decades. It's the founding place of the Brethren of the Coast and saw the cooperation between English, French, Dutch, German, and African pirates. Nassau was already settled for over a half a century and pirates just moved in after the French and Spanish destroyed the local fort, making it defenceless. And after only a decade they were pushed out again. Literally every romanticised thing about pirates you know comes from Tortuga, the only major thing Nassau gave us was the pirate republic of Nassau itself.

    Tortuga's name comes from the Spanish word for turtle. Turtles were invaluable as food for shipwrecked sailors, privateers and pirates. There are two islands bearing this name. The one that is famous is Tortuga, just above Haïti's Port-de-Paix (Port of peace). Then there's the Isla de la Tortuga just above Venezuela and some islands dubbed 'dry tortugas' because they had turtles but no fresh water.

    You need to understand that when Rackham was caught, piracy had radically been downsized. He had taken the mass pardon in 1718 and tried to retire, and thus the larger crew had disbanded. When he returned to piracy in 1720 his crew measured just 14 people. The crew was simply too small to take on rich ships, and when Rackham was caught, the pirate hunters had two ships and 40 people between them.

    To be fair, they made some drastic changes to his character from his real-life counterpart. Black sails Rackham is more of a "cowardly lion" type of character whose original role was to balance out Charles Vane's short sightedness and brutal temper, before becoming his own man. That being said, he does have same affinity of fine clothes as his real life version.

    Honestly his life sounds pretty fun and interesting.... Imagine being alive at that time and sailing ships like that all over the place and attacking and plundering other ships and even stealing their ships if they were of quality. Sailing to some stunning tropical island after a good plunder and partying it up on the tropical paradise with all the alcohol you could want and then going out and doing it all over again. Just imagine living out on those tropical waters though that just sounds so nice even if they were lacking modern accommodations. He lived a more adventurous life than most will live that's for sure not to mention he went down in history just doing his thang lol. It is also amazing that he apparently came up with the iconic flag that we associate with pirates.
