Doing a cake with a toy on top instead of an elaborately shaped and decorated cake is almost universally a better idea. It's a colossal waste of time making a bog standard yellow or chocolate cake and spending two hours doing a bunch of buttercream decorations. 1. Unless you're really good at it, it never looks good. 2. What is the point of pouring three hours into a cake that tastes more or less like a box mix? Spend your time on a nice filling, a better frosting than sugar and butter, a more interesting sponge, etc. I think it's hilarious when people spend six hours making an elaborate fondant decorated yellow cake with vanilla frosting. You know what I can make in six hours? Opera cake. Something elegant that tastes like it took six hours.

Thats also how cakes should be. Make a simple and tasty base, and then just put the toy on top! Don't serve the kids some artwork made of sugar and dry cake... If your kid likes trucks spend that money on a nice toy truck, Ffs!

3:40 when she’s reassuring the creator of the failed Pepa Pig cake . As a perfectionist who isn’t a real baker, it can be super frustrating when I fail at things like this. I bet the creators of all of these failed cakes felt incredibly discouraged, but Anne is here to remind us that it’s ok if we’re not the most amazing bakers because we have other strengths.

I love this series because it gives people a chance to have a good looking cake for their children's birthday party. But i also love the imperfect look of most of these "cake fails" because it just has a home made look to them, which reminds me of my childhood and my birthday cakes when i was younger. At the end of the day it's all about the love, care and effort that was put into it 🧡

Remember people, your child is happy to use their imagination and will absolutely NOT see the imperfections. Your not making the cake to impress your friends your doing it to make your child smile. If he/she smiles you've done good. If your friends snigger - be grateful -- as they won't ask you to make theirs. I'm excellent at grass and lakes but it's amazing what a miniature toy and some lollies (sweets/candies) will do 💜

I love the Cake Rescue series! You're music selection for the recreation of the glaze sadness was delightful! One of my favorite cakes I ever made was a mix of the Thomas fail and the successful dump truck. My buttercream application was rough, but I made the windows out of white chocolate and filled the back with Swiss rolls. My coworker LOVED it. I was so happy that something that didn't look professional or even objectively that great could put childlike glee in his eyes. I learned to try and do my best and that even when my best isn't 'good enough' it can still be beautiful. Thank you for the reminder, Ann.

One person wanted me to make a chocolate chip cookie cake topped with chocolate chip cookies... topped with chocolate chip cookies. But also at the same time not make it one noted or like it was TOO much cookie. So i came up with a base of a chocolate chip cookie cake, topped with a frosting made with (edible) cookie dough+heavy whipping cream, and then crumbled crunchy chocolate chip cookies on top. It was alot of fun coming up with all the components and now its a favorite at the lab 🎉

I really loved the Thomas cake rescue. It's so realistic and practical. Let's be honest with us, it's nice to for us and the child to have a cute cake, but guys, all the stress! And the 2 yo will still love the cake even if it doesn't look like a Michelangelo piece of art and it's so mich nicer for us to enjoy the time at the party then still being stressed out because of all the unrealistic expectations we put in just a cake. Imperfection is the key especially when baking is just a side hustle from being a parent, partner, employee, family member etc.

Growing up, my mom made most of my & sibling's birthday cakes. I made most of my children's cakes. Neither of us was good at decor and they honestly looked silly. AND the kids loved them! They were always happy to eat the cake. Never did I hear a complaint when I put a piece of cake in front of a child. Ann & her rescues are amazing! BUT if you are not artistic, feel free to bake anyway and serve the results. Everyone will enjoy them!

Irish 80s baby here. My mother had that kids bday party cookbook. For our 7th bday each child (and our first cousins-that’s 9 in total) had their pick. My poor mother made 9 cakes from that and similar 80s/90s cookbooks!

I love experts who can remember a time when they didn't know all they do now. Sadly there are some people who haven't learned how to be kind to their former selves so they can't share that grace with others in their former position. Ann is a great role model in how to share expertise while being kind to those who don't share it. I love these cake rescues they have simple techniques that inspire me when I make my own cakes. I'm not invested enough to work with fondant etc. but I do love decorating with lollies etc. My most successful to date is an empty tomb cake for Easter that honestly couldn't be simpler to make and used things like the green coconut grass (like this video) but everyone ate it happily and I could share the decorating process with my kids (something that would conflict with the goals of fondant perfection).

At 3:45 when you say “but if that’s not you, that’s ok, you have other skills and other things that you are great at” the words might seem trite or trivial, but you say it with such warmth and compassion I truly feel better about myself, despite the sadness that accompanies watching your masterful skills knowing that I could never come close to matching your artistic genius. I’m serious, your words transform what could be an arrogant “aren’t I amazing, you all suck” video anywhere else on KZread, and make it into a positive and inspiring piece even for those who have no hope of matching your artistry.

Oh man, what a flash back! I'm a 90's kid so I wasn't around when that book was new but I'm pretty sure my Mum held onto one anyway and I distinctly remember getting the Figure 8 cake for one of my birthdays (though fairly sure it was before I was 8). Not much of a cook or baker myself but your videos are always enjoyable and educational whenever they pop up on my feed.

lol. Solid lateral thinking on the Thomas cake, Anne! My own solution to that problem was to have the kids make the cake as an activity, so they were super happy that they made some thing they could eat. :)
