I had a person call me and needed a cake in 4 days for 45 people. I knew it was a bad idea but it was for a friend of a friend so I told her I would do it but nothing too elaborate as there wasn't time. I explained to her my cakes were more expensive than grocery store cakes and usually start around $100.. She said that was fine. Well I told her she better come by that evening as time was already so short. It was 730pm. She shows up with two children which I wasn't expecting but I pulled out some coloring books and set them up at the table with us. She was very sweet but omg her kids were horrible. The youngest was all over the room knocking things over and screaming and even hit me in the leg really hard under the table! The older child was very rude and ungrateful as the cake was for him. I got a text from the friend saying I want to surprise her by paying for half the cake!! I told her guess what your friend is paying for half the cake! She was really happy about that. So we took almost an hour and a half looking at pics and discussing designs etc. Finally sketched out a beautiful two tier cake and she signed the paperwork. The cake came to $225 and she was to pay the other half that was $112.50 to lock in the order. She then says to me, "Ok I have to go home and ask my husband if this is okay?" Inside I am absolutely furious! It is 9:30 pm and all my me time is gone. She then leaves and as I am cleaning up the mess her kids made in my house, I get a text saying, "So sorry we cant do the cake we just cant afford it right now. OMG.. I was so upset lol.. no good deed ever goes unpunished! I did change my policy though.. no more kids at consultations! :)

LOL you crack me up! The only cake fail story I have is where the customer wanted a 4 tier super hero themed cake, with all the bells and whistles. No problem right? BUT she only wanted it to serve 12 guests and her budget was $50. HA!!!

These type of people want all of this for under $40 bucks

Aaa! He didn't want the infrastructure??? My least favorite cake orders are the ones where the customer has no idea what they want. It's really hard to customize a cake with no client input!

I had one last year. I had a customer wanting a 3-D Butterfly cake for 75 people for a baby shower. She only wanted to pay $40. I told her no because the cost to me is more than that. She said I can get it from walmart. I said good luck.

after watching your video and reading all the comments below, it seems that we all have that type of customer. I had a customer a few years back that wanted a bridal shower cake for 125 people and a wedding cake for their wedding 250 people. After weeks of back and forth of what she wanted for both cakes, and cost for every time she change her mind, she finally ask me to give her a buy one get one free or buy one get one half off!! I wish her luck and said good-bye.

Loved this vid...made me laugh. I love it when people ask for a detailed cake, usually a special theme, in 2 days. Haha...good luck.

Cake fails are an everyday affair! I once had a client that wanted a cake for 30 people and wanted me to cover the entire cake only using 250grs of sugarpaste because she wanted it to be cheap!

This video made laugh....very funny! I had some once ask me to bake them a slice of cake. I thought I misunderstood and asked if they wanted a 6 inch, because that's pretty small. Nope, they wanted a slice to share with their family of four because they did not want to pay full price for a cake. That was weird.

Did you make it with half an egg?

I have just started with sugar flowers. I would love to have those veiners! I brought sample brownies at work and four people ordered and two made advance payment. Coming home I found I don't have the block chocolate I always use as my partner already used up the last two to bake for the family. Went to the store that solely sell the chocolate and they too were out of stock! I can't find any replacement that won't alter the taste. With a heavy heart I called my colleagues who made the orders to tell them I won't be able to deliver. It's been two weeks now and chocolate is still out of stock. I guess now I have to make sure that my ingredients are not exclusive to one store. :-(

Hello, I've enjoyed your videos and am going to buy your modeling chocolate book when I'm done with this comment. I first found your site when I desperately looked for information on fixing modeling chocolate. I was able to salvage my chocolate and have many times tweaked chocolate that was too hard or too soft. It is astonishing how many people who are considered knowledgeable about modeling chocolate will state emphatically that this or that situation cannot be fixed. Thanks for putting this info online.

This is a Perfect example of what small custom bakers deal with on a daily basis. I have been in this business for over 10 years and it never stops. The accent on the caller could be more Indian. That might offend some. Here is another one- Customer calls or emails a request for a 'SIMPLE cake' then sends a picture of the queens castle. They then say 'oh it does NOT have to be that big'. Like that should cut the price 90%. It is very frustrating dealing with these types of customers who have absolutely no clue. The disconnect of what something custom actually costs and what they THINK it costs is unlike any other business. Perhaps because they see cakes at Safeway for $10. I have learned to try to educate them, but usually it is a complete waste of my time with all the back and forth. At some point I simply say I am booked, but Safeway can make what they want so give them a call!

A lady asked me for a 2 tier paw patrol cake. Sent me a picture of the one she wanted. Had huge amount of detail with a Skye topper. She wanted the whole lot for 30 euro, Told her she might be more suited to one of the chain supermarkets. She whined "It's only cake". I told her to p~ss off in a polite way of course. The air was blue around me with the language I was using in my head though!

I will love to win this. I love caking! And Just started my cake business from home. Cake fail story; a client wanted a cake to feed minimum of 90 people and also have sculpted art on the cake like a cap, a walking stick, a chest with clothes and jewelry all made from cake and when i quoted the price they said their budget was 100. In my mind I was like wow. They however decided to look for someone who will make a cheaper cake for them, all I said was I understand your tight budget and good luck getting a less expensive cake.

I havnt had any order fails but I always love getting a call or message with an order and they have no idea what they want....at all and it ends up being a just make me something good. Any particular Flavour? No just something good. Filling? Nope Ok....is this for any particular event? Oh its a baby shower/barmitzva/sweet 16 LOL
