This might just be the largest car we’ve EVER reviewed… Introducing the Cadillac Escalade!
This humungous all-American import measures in at almost 6 metres long, and Mat’s about to take it through a full in-depth review to see if you should consider importing one! (At least, if you live out of the US, that is).
So what do you need to know? Well for starters, there are two engines to choose from, but there’s only one you need to really consider - the huge 6.2-litre V8! It’s a huge engine to fit a huge car, but sadly, the power output seemingly doesn't match up to the size... It only puts out 420hp & 623Nm!
But of course, if you’re considering a car this large, you’re probably more interested in the quality of the interior. And trust us, the Escalade doesn’t disappoint! Not only is it super roomy, but the dash and infotainment system all run pretty well and are dominated by huge screens.
In terms of price, for those of you in the US it’ll set you back from at least $70,000… But is it worth it? Stick with Mat for his latest in-depth review to find out!

I have a CAI intake and Magnaflow cat back exhaust with a resonator. It has a deep and bassy rumble when you step on the gas and a nice growl from the intake, but zero drone on the highway. Throttle response is much better and a little more hp too. I highly recommend Magnaflow for the 6.2L, 376ci V8.

I love it.. It would be an awesome car to own here in Europe where you're surrounded with X5, X7, GLS, Q8, etc... Awesome piece of Americana... Obviously I haven't sit in one but I think Matt is being unfair here.. I've watched few of the reviews of the new Escalade and they all said that the quality of interior is on par with anything from BMW, Merc or Audi... I guess all habits and beliefs die hard. Also Matt, my man, you've been to America 50 times more than I have and you don't know that there are alpine roads in a whole country? Ever heard of the states like Colorado, Nevada, Montana or Washington? There are plenty of incredible twisty alpine roads there that are comparable to the ones in Switzerland or Austria.. Oh yes, there is one place where there's no alpine roads and it's called the freaking Great Britain....

Most car reviewers never fail to laugh at the low specific output of GM's larger V8s, but they always fail to realize that torque is the focus. The 623Nm that the Escalade makes is available from way down low, and that's what you need to haul 2.7 tons of Cadillac. The little A45S has a 2-liter with 30psi being force-fed into it, whereas the GM 6.2 is understressed in comparison. It takes a minute for the A45S to build boost. Moreover, if the naturally aspirated Cadillac did make a significantly higher horsepower figure, it'd be much harder for it to pass emissions tests. Peak numbers don't tell the whole story. That aside, I thoroughly enjoy Mat's reviews and this one is no different. He gave the Caddy a fair shot, which is more than can be said for most American car cynics/critics. Keep 'em coming. 👍

  • @cmtlr

A fair point when you're comparing a hatchback to an SUV. But the N63 4.4l V8 in the current X7 M50i does 523hp and 750nm of torque in an engine two thirds the size and the torque is available lower down in the rev range. So yea, GM V8s can't do power OR torque well. And before you claim NA vs. Turbo, the Mercedes M159 6.2l V8 can do 622bhp and 635nm in NA form. So even with the same displacement and similar Torque the Germans manage to get another 200hp out the engine.

@@cmtlr As much as I love BMW SUVs, I can say with almost absolute certainty that the GM V8 will outlast the N63 as a result of being understressed and mechanically simpler. While I respect BMW's engineering, I'd hate to be the guy footing the bill when the N63 gets recalled once again for oil burning issues and the like. Fantastic engine on paper, but its track record is less than ideal. As for the M159, maybe it's best that we don't bring high-compression, high performance dry sump V8s (where shooting for peak numbers is the aim) into this. It's also worth noting that the reason the M159 is long gone is because it wouldn't be able to cope with today's emissions standards, which is something GM's 6.2 does (if only barely).

  • @cmtlr

    @cmtlr

@@alvie4148 I was just using like-for-like comparisons for ease. In the rest of the world we use 4 or 6 cylinder diesels when we need torque and before you say it's boring, Alpina might have a thing to say. As for reliability, I can't comment as I haven't owned any of the engines we are talking about. I would theorise that if big, American V8s were a byword for reliability then they would be powering vehicles around the world. Instead they struggle to sell outside of NAFTA.

Pushrods don’t typically make a lot of hp/L. GM put a hot V in the CT6 and we have many higher tech engines but there’s a reason the small block Chevy is still around 70 years later. The LT6 engine is out now, what do you think of it? Also You have to build for the culture and market. North America wants big trucks, SUVs and sports cars with cheap interiors but Europe and Asia doesn’t(🇯🇵Gets away with cheap interiors tho). If you did there would be a lot of these engines around. Companies like Ultima and Ginetta us Chevy V8s because they see the benefits.

My neighbour recently got one and because we share a drive way and there is no wall separating the two drives his Cadillac makes my land cruiser look like a mini

People talk about the size Cadillac Escalade (and it's sister cars the GMC Yukon & Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban). The reason it's that's size is so that it can fit 7-8 large adults...and their luggage too in the ESV/XL version.

This with the 3.0 Aluminum turbo diesel is absolutely amazing. I am waiting for that motor to come back on the option sheet then I grab this and it equals my sedan in MPG.

The augmented HUD takes me back to barrelling down the street in an Escalade in Need For Speed Underground 2. That alone sells the whole car to me.

A 420 HP 6.2L engine is gonna last longer than a 421 hp 4 cylinder. Also it make more torque and therefore would likely better gas mileage carrying that much weigh

Cant you just have a switch that gives different power options? 420hp does seem like a small amount for such a massive engine
