    We used to own a 1985 Cadillac Sedan Deville back around 1995. My family drove it to San Antonio, TX to Zacatecas, Mexico until my mother sold it for a 1995 Mercury Cougar in 2000. We now have a 2019 Chrysler 300 after we sold off the 2015 Dodge Journey. *sigh* I miss that 1985 Cadillac as it brought back fond memories of my dad.

    You gotta seek out another deville and ditch those things you've got now. You'll be so glad the amount of space you'll have to drive in as opposed to that sardine can 300, and better bang for your buck in every capacity than that half-step above a caliber Dodge. If you NEED a truck the earlier Escalades were as much a truck as any real GMC, or if you wanna keep in the Dodge family then the 80s Ramcharger is a helluva truck

    I love my '92 DeVille, maroon with tan interior, though the angular bodies and quad sealed-beam headlights of the 1985-89 DeVilles have always been appealing to me. I found a black '88 recently with an optional carriage top and red velour interior recently on a cruise. It was a bit overpriced for the year and milage but in very, very nice cosmetic condition. I daily drive her year round and keep up on the maintenance and upkeep. She helps me keep my period-chauffeur custom '69 Fleetwood Brougham and Superfly '77 Sedan DeVille in minty-driver condition while still riding in Cadillac Style along with her triple blue '87 Brougham sister.

    It was a product of it's time that sold quite well. Same basic design up through 1993 model year. I didn't care for the dashboard layout, the wide turning radius, or the slow power windows but they were great driving cars. The build quality wasn't great but not terrible either.

    I beg to differ. I remember being fascinated by all that technology and a V-8 packed into a smaller, FWD platform. By around 1987, the deVille had a superbly soft ride. Can't say much for the HT-4100, but then it was the 1980's.

    Not sure about these cars, but Cadillac took a bath on the downsized Eldorado in 86, had to scurry and make some changes to make it different from the Riv and Toronado

    The downsized Devilles and Fleetwoods sold extremely well when they were first introduced in 1985 as you see here. Sadly the only problem these cars had was the very weak 4.1 V8. It was known for blowing head gaskets. Problem was finally solved with the introduction of the 4.5 V8 in 1988. If you love this body style, try to buy a 1988 with the better motor.

    @@klwthe3rd pre-1987 DeVilles can be retrofitted with the 4.9 if you're hellbent on that motor, but actually the reason they failed is because most people were still used to the less technological american V8s of the previous decades. Someone used to 90s and such cars will have more good fortune with the 4.1 and 4.5 and its upkeep.

  • @WSNO

    Its all a matter of preference. I love my 60s & 70s Cadillacs, but my daily is a '92 DeVille, same as these just with the corners rounded out. Its great for mingling in modern traffic on its level, and parking is easier than a big land yacht. That's what these cars excell at while retaining the comfort and aesthetic prestige of earlier Cadillacs. Anyone who wanted a big Caddy in the 80s would be buying a Brougham; still Front-engine-rear-wheel-drive body-on-frame into the 90s. I've also got one of those in the driveway year-round, triple blue. 😉

  • @klwthe3rd

    @@WSNO I would think the retrofit would be a great idea honestly. The 4.5 and 4.9 motors were much much better in regards to durability and NOT that much more complex compared to the 4.1.

    You're wrong. People didn't want huge old luxury cars anymore. That's a myth created by today's crowd. If people wanted that back then, they could have still bought the full-sized Fleetwood that was still in production, but this new Sedan deVille outsold it in the thousands. Lincoln couldn't compete because they didn't have the dollars to revamp their whole lineup so they tried to push the Town Car as a real luxury car. It didn't work, Caddy still outsold Lincoln year after year.

    I think the American gas guzzler cars of the late 70's and early 80's some of the worst performers ever produced. Remember the clear coat coming off the the paint job, and the interior headliner falling on top or your head. Cadillac was no exception.

  • @TVHouseHistorian

    @TVHouseHistorian

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes. Not to mention the numerous electrical issues that plagued GM vehicles of that era. All gadgets and switches would malfunction early in the life of the car. Most of the issues were with the luxury models. In some cases, the cars would literally self-destruct by catching fire. The Chevy Suburban was known to be a time bomb, lasting maybe 5 years before having every issue you mentioned, plus a whole lot more. Cadillac was no exception. Growing up, our neighbors down the road had a brand new Cadillac that gave them headaches from the first week of ownership. The late 1970s and throughout the entire decade of the 80s was a time when GM did not stand for quality.
