    I love the old cabover Pete's.... very well built trucks. The old Detroit makes it that much sweeter! Have to say, the best part of this truck is the outside door handles. Love it! Keep it alive man. Sweet old ride for sure.... I'll have one some day.

    I am 13 as well and I would love one! I read a magazine called ATHS Antique Truck Historical Society and they always have good articles about trucks! I am tellin you kid we are growing up in the wrong generation, I would have loved to grow up back in the golden days of trucking and drag racing and when there were hardly no emissions bull shit so you got all the power out of the truck when you got it without having to mod it up much at all!

    Yep found that out the first time I drove it loaded, which was the first time I had ever driven a truck loaded haha. I had 41 cows on that pot. There is a 7% grade about 1/2 mile long with turns at the top and bottom, sheer drop offs on both sides. It is a 13 spd and by the top I was in 5th gear and at about 1200 rpms white knuckled and puckered. It was the most scared I have ever been in my life, lol.

    Love that rolling idle!!!this is what my uncles Detroit sounded like exactly with the long rolling idle where it sounds like it s going to starve out. Oh the memories! here in south western Ontario Canada in the bitter cold at 3 am when we used to get it ready to head out for the day. I would love to hear it from start to finish when it warms up and levels out.

    That sound brings back memories back in 1989 I drove a 78 White Road Boss with a 318 Detroit for a while and a straight pipe. Low man on the totem pole at that time so I got the oldest truck. Other drivers hated that truck especially when I would pull in the yard, rest stop, or truck stop in the wee hours of the morning. It was a garuntee that they'd be woke up while in their sleeper! Hahaha I had no sleeper just a steering wheel to lay my head on and catch a nap.

    Great rig nothing fancy on it. No aero scoops no wings just plain jane factory stock. Back when you can destinguish one make from the other all rigs look alike these days & no noise with all these emissions & sound depression. The glory days are gone back in the day we took the noise of a detroit for granted, now we nostalgia for it. Nothing like a screaming jimmy on hands and knees or a V8 Mack or V8 Cat even a 3406B at 4 & a quarter with straight pipes. Lets not forget VT 350 Cummins music to all us old timers at least we were there & can remerneice those days. Let the music play

    @@1965Gindy In Europe this junks can go with 40 ton of GWR (88500 lb) with fuel consumtion under 30 l /100 km. Thats about 8 miles per galon. Detroit diesel never does less than 40 l/100km. When your truck can save 10 l of fuel doing 20 000 km per month (EU averange) that means in 4 years you will save around 95 000 - 120 000 $. For this money you can buy your self a brand new truck that smell good and have almost twice the power at 1400-1500 rpm, not 2100 like this. So if you have a 500-600 horsepower, you really have it. Not for around one second before shift, like in DD (2100 rpm @ Pmax). And all that FOR FREE! Just thanks to fuel savings. (y) Keep that in mind

    @@V8Lenny Exactly, most diesels really dont like the long idle times as they glaze the cylinder walls (from a large diesel engineer). It's the other way around from what the other guy is saying. Modern diesels cope with it better. It's city driving, stop-start all the time that kills the modern diesels with all the filters and computers. Take it for a burn on the highway and it's fine. Change the injectors, clean/change the air filters like on any vehicle. I think with the cars people expect the modern tech to be fool-proof and almost maintenance free, and complain when it doesn't last as long "as old diesels did". Not sayibg this is necessarily the case with truckers though. Also I'm not a mechanic but have spent time around cars and knowledgeable people.

I just bought a 2005 Ford excursion with a 6.0 powerstroke to add to the fleet along with a 2007 New Holland TS125A 6.7 Cummins, 2002 7.3 powerstroke, 2000 7.3 powerstroke, 1986 6.9 IDI, 1973 2 stroke Detroit, 2015 Polaris RZR, 2007 Polaris Sportsman 800, Honda CRF 110, 2 Honda CRF 50's, full custom built tube chassis rock crawler, and a Husqvarna Lawn mover. None of these pieces of equipment have ever been in a shop other than mine, I do all the maintence and repairs on them. I could have a full time channel just working on stuff.

    Dumb question I guess but why do Diesel engines surge or cycle up and down in rpms when idling?

  • @dansam645

    @dansam645

    5 жыл бұрын

    Jleed989 a Because they have so much iron to heat to run properly, the diesel fuel can't burn evenly for every power stroke so it sort of lopes if you will. Also they don't have glow plugs the heat the said massive amount of iron, so the heat is caused by violently compressing the air. If the head/block is to cold it won't run properly. Hope this clears it up for you

    Liking the truck, but surely the livestock trailer should be hauled by a Jimmy and the Pete should have a reefer on (Sorry, bad CW McCall reference there). Love the sound of old diesel engines specially when they're cold & doing that lope, I guess the governor can't react fast enough at idle speed until the fuel warms a little and thins out. (This is based on my experience running stuff on rapeseed oil, they get a cold lope at warmer ambient and takes a bit longer to smooth out.)

    Henrik, Check out this video it explains it. An no there is no mixing of oil. It was known as The Green Leaker. The engine was painted green an it leaked oil where ever you parked it. • @iBackshift
    @iBackshift5 жыл бұрын

    The buffer screw needs to be turned in a little bit. With the engine running at idle, loosen the locknut, screw the buffer in until the idle raises a bit. Dont adjust it unless you have someone ready at the emergency shut off to close the flap or have something to block the intake off. It will take a few 1/16ths of a turn but the hunting will stop. A cold start at that outside temperature should not have a hunting idle.
