Time flies by Shawn as it do for us all especially with the hard work and dedication that you’ve put in on this major cabin build. This is indeed a full blown house with all the amenities. And way bigger than your first home you’ve built. I wouldn’t blame you at all to incorporate power tools into this project to make it faster and easier. Your craftsmanship is impeccable.

You have done incredible incredible, incredible work. It's not the work that's turning you Gray, it's the planning of the next day. Everything you've done is impressive, now it's time to bring your family in, take a couple of weeks off. Hire five or six workers to grind down and sand your walls and floors, use multiple work vacuums to clear up sawdust. Then put on a beautiful blonde Stain, the kind that almost looks like paint clear coat everything, turn the interior design over to your wife, and please keep the I'm deerskin curtains they'd look better with hoops, create your own outdoor kitchen, continue developing a garden till it looks like your daughters that you did so much hard work on. Build your restroom edition, build a water Tower and install a fire sprinkler system. The a five or six foot fence around all your future pasture areas. At the bottom of the fence, place for foot by 50 ft long 1 inch steel square mesh along the bottom of your fencing. That's 1 ft up attached to the Post and wired in to classic four-by-four inch squares a wire mesh fencing. Secure 1 ft of the 4in square wire mesh to post and wiring and 4 ft of the wiring to lay flat on the ground and let the grass grow through it secured with large three or four inches staples. Discourages wolves skunks all critters etc from digging. The same for your chicken coops. And you're right you look old and rustic, we all know you are a beast, the outside and the inside of your magnificent. Let some knuckleheads brighten it up for, and we like to see pretty James this spring and summer thank you!

Yeah, I worked with my hands all my life, was a sheet metal mechanic, then pipeliner and at age 55 I started breaking. I'm amazed at the work you have done especially with your age involved. I had the best, most advanced tools available and by 57 I was done. My body just couldn't take anymore. Now for the last 3 years I've been in and out of doctors just trying to get where I can go fishing and play with my pup Sasha. She has really been the one that has kept me going. I thank God for her every day. What you are doing is amazing and I can't help but be a little envious. Be good to yourself and take it easy, at least at times. Enjoy the fruits of your labor. It will all be done in time.

I joke with folks, tell them that from the neck up I'm only 30, from the neck down, I'm 100. (I'm 76) and, there's more than a little truth to it. When I started building homes in the late 70's we built similar to this, hand saws for most cuts, sidewinder circular saws would be on the job but not handy to use and the selection of blades wasn't great so they got hot after a few cuts and wouldn't always cut straight. it was more common to have your hand saws sharp and a good axe for framing or we'd use a rigging axe for framing. Now my crews have compressors, nail guns, worm drive Skil saws, jig saws, power planers, belt sanders and everything also in battery operated. We build a lot faster now and the level of craftsmanship has stayed the same or even slightly improved, though I think that is mostly due to better materials being available. When building things so fast you don't have the connection to the project I've noticed, there is a lot less enjoyment/pride and a lot more drive to race to get it done and start the next project. In the early 90's I used to contract for a lot of tract homes in northern California and it was only about speed and little about building a quality home that will be enjoyed for years. Now I build large custom spec homes and it is a lot better, with less turnover of employees and more interesting work. I have often dreamed about going in the woods and doing it all myself, fish in the mornings and evenings and work during the day. Hunt deer and elk in the fall and ducks in the winter time. I see time slipping away, I fear it won't happen...and there's no way the wife is giving up Starbucks and her Land Rover for a snowmobile and a cup of Yuban. Maybe if I get a piece of land in Idaho or Wyoming that is drivable to the Starbucks and accessible by vehicle...but then there are neighbors.

Shawn, you haven't ages a bit since you started Cabin Life. If anything you look better than ever. Cali is thriving, I love that dog 🐕 I'm creative and I love any type of arts and crafts. There's nothing more satisfying than immersing yourself in your art. I wish I had more time. But you're doing that every day in your cabin. Every piece of that cabin was lovingly taken from it's natural surroundings and transformed into a true work of art by your gifted hands. That can only keep you young. I'll keep young by just watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your cabin life, I love it.

Great job! A lot of things are hand made and it adds to their value, but few hand made items are also cut without Miter Saws, table saws, routers etc. Your hand made cabin is like a work of art, we get to watch come together. Yes it is hard work and getting older doesn't help, but this cabin will be there for your grandchildren's children. 👍

Nice to see Cali in the chair beside you 😄 There is a time for everything in our limited lives on this earth. You put your body through a lot with this enormous build for one man alone in the wilderness. Hopefully, future builds and projects can be less labor intensive, giving more time for your many other skills and interests, so that you preserve your body and mind for many blessed future days to come. Your work in the garden, hunting, fishing, procuring enough fire wood would alone keep most people busy enough. And soon it will be time to start tapping your yearly maple syrup trees. My 65 year old self came back to add a bit of my own life's experience: Living and working alone for extended periods can be draining on a person's soul. Take more time just for the people in your life-family and friends.

We all get older, Shawn. Hard work doesn't make it better. I have worked all my life and it has taken its toll. We bought a rural property 3 years ago and built a cabin, but not one like yours. My husband is younger and works 5 and sometimes 6 days a week, so we built it in his spare time with power tools. I am trying to make the stone and clay garden fertile. It's not easy, but I love it and it will help save money because inflation is getting crazy. You've built an incredible work of art and it took a lot of energy! You should take time to relax. Regeneration is necessary in the long run. Work will never be really easy if you want to live self-sufficiently.
