This was one of the first things I did to my 02 I bought last year. The old fixtures were actually melted right above the DRLs. The stock incandescents were too hot and too close to the plastic. I went with a $50 set of fixtures and switchback LEDs and am very happy with the results.

Yeah, a very good idea.

I just ordered a set. Will have them installed when I have the bumper repainted from a little incident with an industrial extension cord on the highway.

I changed mine out when I first bought my Vette. Halo tail lights on the rear really modernized the look to me. Only thing I think needs a better upgrade is the back up light lenses. I smoked mine because they always looked faded to me.

Finally put mine on today. Honestly wasn't as bad as I expected. Crazy how bad the old ones were! Thank you for this video!

Great video! I sure wish they had chrome. I guess the black will look better than the milky DRL's I have now.🤮

thumbs up. Ill think about it. Previous owner has 1 LED in mine---and LED headlights---with some booogey wooooogey blackbox thing....aint no brighter and its funky at night with turn signals acting funny. STOCK IS BEST. summer project.

My friend. The perfect show for you to come to Hawaii is the day I get everything needed to install the Super Charger on my Corvette. That will be awesome. In fact I will have you stay at my home in Makakilo so you don't have to worry about hotel or rental car. All you need is your ticket and spending money for your gifts to take home. @@Toys4Life the original housing. the bore where the light bulb turns and clips into is completely melted. since i dont have a lift i had to remove the headlights up top and destroy my hand. I took an LED and Gorilla taped it. It's been holding since but i definitely want your housing. makes the car look more modern too.

I bought these same turn signal housings last year cause the previous own of mine installed clear turn signal housings which I hated

Just changed mine out today. I installed new bulbs, same as the factory ones. But the new enclosures are awesome. I did not need to go to LED because I wanted to keep it on the least expensive side for now. Everyone complains about the bulbs, burning the housing, but remember these cars are 20+ years old. 🤔

to each their own. As long as the OEM lights work I am fine with not introducing another potential failure point into my old car. I suppose that my sockets are not melted is because a dry climate has less chance for water to drip straight down into the light fixture and cause a short.

It's not from a short, it's just from the heat of the bulb over time. I suspect the ones in the Southwest get super 🔥

My car being white, I still like the originals. I am replacing the passenger side fixture as I write this wit OEG. I understand if your car has a dark color converting. It is the bulbs that causes the problem. So, I will be going with the LED switchback DRL.

Makes the car look new. I used LEDs.

I love the c5, many don't like the pop up headlights but I love them. The Corvette was the last production car to feature pop ups and it will remain that way thanks to European laws.

After watching this video a few times, like 4-5 times, it was cool enough weather wise (west coast heat wave) to install the Amerilite Turn Signal Housings last night after work. I started about 5pm and by 6:30 I was finally able to get to the old housing. To get to the screws on the housing was getting to be a real pain. Especially the 10mm in front. Losing time due to my schedule I just said screw this and put it back together until early Saturday morning and I have all day to mess with this swap. I have Rhino Ramps that I bought at AutoZone, which barely gave me enough clearance and was a bear to drive onto as the front spoiler I installed under the bumper kept sliding the ramps as I drove up the ramps. I bought new turn signal bulbs but the AutoZone was out of stock on the side marker lights and I want to put all new bulbs in. Fortunate that I didn't finish the job last night as this morning I found the side marker bulb on the driver's side was out and needs replacing. I didn't want to have to do this job twice due to a burned out bulb. Yes, I have the appropriate tools and was wishing I had either an electric or air gun to make life easier vs. just a ratchet and sockets. Your video is wonderful, as all of your videos are but this was just too much with out the proper time to do the job. But, I agree with you that these new Amerilite housings look fantastic and just as your old housings mine need replacing as well. I'm not giving up.

@@Toys4Life I already have the white LED bulbs on the car now and yellow on the smaller market light. It's pretty bright. Yes I know ...the hyper flash but I actually like the hyper flash. I have red LED tail lights also. It's bright and makes a difference in the daytime traffic.

Very cool! I have to ask about the melting that occurs with the stock bulbs. My passenger side one I can see the burned and melted plastic above the stock bulb. So are LED light replacements really a big deal. Are there no LED lights that are plug and play?

My only concern is when they fail (and Even LEDs fail) you cant easily fix them on a Saturday morning by going to AutoZone. Instead you have to try to figure out if the manufacturer you bought from is even still around, so that it will be plug and play with what you have. I'll stick with the regular bulbs for turn signals.

Ordered a set also thanks to your video!! Was wondering how yours were holding up? I replaced my lights with LED’s and it’s cooking the plastic above the light just like my old housing melted and cracked above the lightbulb. Any ideas?

Mine have held up find. Regular bulbs do get hot for sure, LEDs do as well if the resistor is built into the LED. My LED tail lights in the C6 have the resistor in a safe place to avoid any issues - check it out. kzread.info/dash/bejne/q6x5zLqsdJu2j5M.html

I found the 8mm screw to be a real PITA.

I am surprised you did not go with LED illumination? BTW, you posts are always informative!

I am not really a fan of the LED offerings. The looks, added complexity, harder to find parts when something burns out and the cost. That having been said, if I did much night driving - I would pop for a major headlight upgrade - the stock headlights are marginal at best and that is a safety concern IMO!

I replaced mine w/oem also. That lasted 2 months then installed led switchbacks, KnightDrive circular leds, rear VetteLights gen 2 halos with laser side markers. SO GLAD I DID! You'll be able to see the road at night and car looks even cooler!! Do it. Don't hesitate. You'll be happy you did.

I installed the Sharp Light Innovations headlights on my C5 as I did not think that the OEM headlights were adequate. Since the DRLs were easy to get to with the headlights removed I installed the LEDs. The OEM bulbs get really hot and crack the plastic housing allowing water to get in.

I've heard good things about the sharp light headlights, maybe their next on the list? I know the stock bulbs crack the factory turn signal housings, I'm going to take one of these out next winter and see what it looks like. If it looks like it's starting to melt maybe I'll switch to LEDs but I'd rather stay incandescent for the convenience on the turn signals anyway.

@@Toys4Life you can go with real LED manufacturer like Sylvania/Osram or Philips, they have 4157 amber in their assortment. This is my next move. I am not sure I will yet replace the housing. I have 2 on my shelf, and I need to make room inside for a custom parking light….which I use as white DRL.

Interesting how things degrade unnoticed before our eyes, until one day… 😮

Indeed!

When I replaced mine I left the holder in place and just removed the lens. I had to do it twice because the DRL bulbs managed to melt the housings on the first set.

It is a pretty short list - look for a mod video this winter perhaps! About 13psi of boost.

I ran those for 2 years now and they're faded... I now run those fancy led turn signals now

That' odd. Most C5's don't sit outside much - yet alone the short period of time in the early AM or evening where the turn signals even see direct sun. Were yours Amerilite? For $55 bucks I will test these and if they fade on me I WILL report back!!!

@Toys4Life C5 same brand. They were a lil cheaper of a price 2yrs ago lol but my c5z sits outside for 12hrs when I'm at work. I treat it like a regular car and the bulbs did melt the inside plastic too.

That probably would look nicer however the legal side of my brain says forget it, if I'm ever involved in an accident I don't want to give the attorney for the other side any ammo when negotiating a settlement- hopefully a settlement where they're paying me for their client causing accident. You give them an inch and they'll take 3 in. Smoked tail lights can be horrible if You happen to be rear-ended by somebody which is one of the most common accidents. It will likely receive less compensation if they have any sort of evidence that you were not as visible as you should have been.

Ever considered getting new wheels for the c5 to spice up the look. Probably making the car look newer.

I have always been a 5 spoke chrome/polished alum guy as I like the way they look and I also remind myself every time I wash the C5 how the 5 spoke wheel is the easiest wheel to clean - compared to a complex design with all sorts of nooks and crannies. But mainly, I love the stock ones. If I had the cheap wagon wheels, they would be gone within a week of ownership! What's your wheel preference?

Just remove the headlight bucket assembly instead and you can do it all from the top

I should have tried that method on one side and then gave an opinion on which way is quicker, easier and problem free.

My old ones were actually melted. Turned off the drl's when I bought it. Led everywhere now.

If it fails - I will report back. That having been said, if they fail in 5 years - I would replace with the same for $55 bucks. They look very nice IMO.

@@Toys4Life What I would do if I were in your shoes, add a security film over it for extra protection in case rocks hit it which is very common if you drive on a gravel road.
