C5 Corvette Brake Bleeding (Change your NASTY 20 year old Fluid!)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Your C5 Corvette Brake Fluid is neglected. Chances are it has never been changed and it is now quite black and contains too much moisture. Follow Along as we bleed your C5 Brakes the RIGHT WAY!
Bleed Sequence CORRECTION 1997-2000: Passenger Rear, Driver Rear, Passenger Front, Driver Front. 2001-2004: Passenger Rear, Driver Front, Driver Rear, Passenger Front. L = DRIVER Side and R = PASSENGER side: Since we doing this to flush fluid and not bleed out AIR, the order is not a big deal - but we should do this in the correct order anyways!

    @@milojanis4901 A goof - yes. A big goof- consider this. Since there is no air in the system - we are simply flushing out old fluid and pushing new fluid through - the order does not matter. If you have air in your system from a caliper replacement - it shouldn't matter either - unless you let all the fluid run out (always plug when changing a caliper). The only way the order matters is if you have air in the system from running the master cylinder dry or having to replace the master cylinder or ABS system. In that case, the order is more important and a Tech 2 or high end scan tool that will give directions as you go needs to be used to bleed air out of the ABS system.

    @Toys4Life C5 I am now totally confused! I enjoy your videos very much, so I'm not trolling. But now you are saying the order of bleeding makes no difference? If that is true, why list it at all, and why correct what you said originally? I really need my fluid bled. Like you, it is black, and 23 years old. So what do I do here? Have the captions been corrected? Or do I substitute L for R and vice versa? Or does it really matter? Or?? Please help me out here. Thanks TFL4

    Castrol SRF, clutch and brakes 100% One of the longest lasting racing brake fluids. I do mine every year, and diff, trans, power steering, coolant, all of them!! If your brake fluid looks clean after 1 year, you can at least do one corner to keep , not only the water out, but the particles aren't always dark in color and eats away at your seals. Fluids is absolutely the key 🔑 to keeping any car healthy for a long time ⌛️ 🤝

    I have done this a couple times on my 03. Another thing to be careful is when topping off reservoir, pour slow, because air bubbles like to attatch themselves to the level sensor. Then when you are all done, and start car, you get an error message saying low brake fluid. Then you need to spend a lot of time tapping and stirring brake fluid to get those tiny bubbles off and away from sensor. Great tip on the tool used for removing need to pump brake pedal. I think I will get one of those.

    I did this last winter on my '04 Z. It was at 60k miles and time for a change as it hadn't been done before. 18 year old fluid looks rough! I have a one-person bleeder system too, and those definitely help the DIYer. Last I could find was a change interval at 30,000 miles or 5 years (due to moisture absorption as you mentioned). Good video. It should help those that want to do their own in the future.

    If you have a Tech2 or a nice scanner, you should be doing an abs flush. Otherwise you are leaving dirty and wet (water) fluid in your abs that will be mixed with your fresh fluid whenever activated.

    Of course a Tech 2 / high end scanner bleed would be best.. Be that as it may, I believe it's still highly beneficial to change out 98% of the fluid. How how much of the fluid within the ABS system itself do you suppose is mixed with the rest of the fluid when it activates?

    Thanks again for the good info. Didnt know about pumping the brakes on an older car. Also wonder if you ever use the Mighty Vac for bleeding the brakes? I have one but not sure how well it works for that. I came across an old post if yours on the forums last night, It was about the Vararam, does it need a tune after, etc....I have a new one sitting for a few years now and dont want to tune for just that, but seeing your signature responding to posts helps greatly because I know the info is legitimate. Often the technical info is crucial in decision making. I appreciate your contribution. Thank you for the help you provide. A video about the current status on tuning these C5's, mail order, versus dyno, versus handheld, etc. It seems hard to get anything definitive on that, and thats the part im most nervous about because the car runs great now. I dont want dyno tune short of a cam, which im in no hurry, If the bala cer needs changed, a cam goes in with it. Im that guy who wants Vararam, headers now, but not a dyno tune until cam. It seems I have to do it, and see how it runs. If so, is there an inexpensive way to monitor my air fuel ratio. I dont want to be lean, but no codes to tell me situation. The car is a 2004, stock to my knowledge, 155K. ,daily driver. No worries if youre to busy to answer this, you are still a guru in my opinion. Ive learned alot from you, especially on Corvette Forum.

  • @Toys4Life

    @Toys4Life

    Жыл бұрын

    I think you could do a veraram without a tune if it's the only mod and you're tune is still stock. From the factory they're pretty rich and the odds of going to lean would be minimal. I probably wouldn't do headers and the Vera ram without at least monitoring your air fuel ratio with a wideband at the higher RPMs. Good luck to you and thanks for the kind words!

    Most brake fluid manufacturers recommend 3 years on a new car and 2 years every time thereafter. If it's a weekend garage queen 5 years is fine. But as easy as the process is, more often is better for one of the most important safety systems of the car. I use ATE TYP 200 DOT 4. Great video as always!

    You can use DOT 5.1 in your C5 but *not* DOT 5 as it isn't compatible with ABS. DOT 5.1 is also compatible with DOT 4 and 3. DOT 5 is good for cars without ABS that sit for long periods of time as the fluid is not hygroscopic like the DOT 3, 4, and 5.1 is. If you have done an ABS delete on your C5 "because race car" or it was easier than trying to fix your busted EBCM then by all means flush the system and use DOT 5.

    Hey Ken, another great video. I wish you had one on installing the remote clutch bleeder you have 😉. Anyhow, I was researching the pressure bleeder you used and I have a question. • @Toys4Life

    @Toys4Life

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you. What you are describing is in fact the way the instructions read and a perfectly acceptable way of doing it. I don't like to do it that way because you have to pour a bunch of brake fluid in the jug and any left over in the jug has to be thrown out - plus it's a mess. I much prefer to just keep an eye on the reservoir (as I highlighted) and make sure the reservoir never comes close to running dry. I did all four of my brakes and I only refilled it two times with a large margin of safety. Hope this helps!

I'll keep using that three I think and my master cylinder because I don't have any heat issues and I'll be changing it every couple years from now on. I believe that for absorbs moisture at a faster rate than DOT3, about 90% sure that's true.

If there is any fluid left over when all the wheels are done I dispose it ( brake fluid does not store well)and throughly clean the power bleeder with warm water and let air dry.

  • @Toys4Life

    It compressed the air in the tank (impossible to compress a liquid) and the air forces the air into the master cylinder reservoir which pushes fluid through the system. Keep it topped off by refilling after bleeding 2 brakes (my preferred way) and you don't need to waste extra fluid that you pour into the tank & it is less messy. If you don't want to keep an eye on the fluid in the M.C. reservoir, then you can fill the tank.

    Replacing the master cylinder is kind of a pain and will likely introduce air into the system requiring and automated bleed of the ABS system with a Tech 2 scan tool or equivalent. Replacing the reservoir when done properly introduces no air. Yes, there is a bleed order and it's in the description and in the video.

    I did a correction in the description. Although if we are just flushing fluid (no air from say - a caliper swap out) the sequence does not matter. *Bleed Sequence CORRECTION* 1997-2000: Passenger Rear, Driver Rear, Passenger Front, Driver Front. 2001-2004: Passenger Rear, Driver Front, Driver Rear, Passenger Front. L = DRIVER Side and R = PASSENGER side: Since we doing this to flush fluid and not bleed out AIR, the order is not a big deal - but we should do this in the correct order anyways!

    I flushed out my 22 year old brake fluid and all was going fine until I got to the driver side rear. I was getting more air than fluid. The reservoir never got close to empty. I finally shut the bleeder screw and was still getting a little air and fluid while I had a vacuum on it. Is it possibly a bad bleeder screw?

    Vacuum on a bleeder screw can suck air between the bleeder valve and its threads and the threads of the caliper.

    Not good. So the fronts are locked up in the backs don't get any fluid. I imagine you've got some ABS codes for sure.

    A little bit might remain. Hopefully any contaminants will slowly be diluted into the 95% of the fluid that you just replaced. You could go to a dealership and have them use a Tech 2 to bleed it for another couple hundred bucks. At least this way you're getting all of the fluid changed in the master cylinder and all of the brake calipers.

    I am installing Blackout kit on all the lights, spoilers in the front and one on the rear..I was hoping you can tell me what kind of light bulbs I can replace the bulbs for the headlights to make them brighter please. I am going to install a Super Charger in my 2006 300c Heritage Edition I see how it feels. If I like it I will install one on the Corvette. Let me know about the bulbs please. Thanks Joe

    Sounds like a fun project! Be careful about blacking out your rear tail lights at all, if someone rearends you and it's a serious incident, their attorney will likely try to get the lights as partial blame for you being rear-ended. As for headlights I've used the silver Stars and they're a little bit brighter, but I don't really do a ton of night driving so I haven't focused on it too much. My biggest reluctance for the aftermarket ones is that The better on long enough to know that when they go bad in 5 years trying to find replacement parts from some of these manufacturers can be difficult. So I have yet to find the holy grail for headlights yet. I'm looking now, it's on my list too, good luck with your project!!

    @@Toys4Life thanks for getting back to me. No I don't drive a lot at night so I am ok for that part. Yes please get back to me about the headlight bulbs upgrade that you recommend when you find one you trust. I trust your judgment. Maybe do a show about it. That will be awesome. Thank you again your programs are awesome. The Best

    Why don't you fill your Motive Bleeder and keep the fluid flowing? That is the point of the Motive Bleeder.

    IMO -Too much of a mess, I just had to fill the red up twice. Then You would have to toss all the brake fluid in the motive tank cuz it absorbs moisture like a spong.

    That's actually a really good point. If you filled with fluid, you'd save time on brake bleed, but then that time would be used to empty old brake fluid, clean Motive container, etc. I was reading that the brake fluid couldn't be stored in the Motive container anyway, and would have to be cleaned out with denatured alcohol, probably because the plastic in the jug would get broken down. I like your method better. @@Toys4Life
