I’m watching as many IFR vids as I can get my hands on before I start my training, and this video was light Christmas for light bulbs going on!! So many little things that I was only partly getting, just clicked. I love the way you articulate things so clearly! Keep up the amazing videos!

I have 1000's of hours and you seem to be doing good. Your friend is a great instructor, so follow his lead and you will be golden. IMC will get easier as you gain experience and easier yet when you fly bigger planes. I dont even know you but I am proud of you.

Just watched this video all the way through. And want to say, you both did an excellent job! Brandan was superb .. there were a few comments about Brandan being "edgy." Well, let's see ... Old Style, Circa 70,s/80,s C172, No Auto-Pilot, No Back-Up AI, Carburetor Heat (Lord freakin help me), Fogged Up Instrument Panel, Night IMC with 800' Ceiling, Moderate RA .. and one very new to instrument flying pilot in the left seat. Ahhh ... yeah ... I'd be a little edgy too. I used to CFII and flew in these conditions with students many times. . also flew cargo at night for Ameriflight (yes, it was a while back .. about 2004.) But even then, when I flew real IMC the planes at least had a basic Auto-Pilot/Wing-Leveler. The aircraft Brandan and Josh are flying is as "basic" as it gets. Brandan was absolutely on top of the game . . and so was Josh. One other thing, I think sometimes in this era of GA Flight, with the pervasiveness of full glass panels and 2-axis auto pilots, etc. .. it is easy to forget the very high level of risk one encounters in true night IMC, . . . and the very high level of skill and talent needed to safely fly this particular type of aircraft these guys are flying in this video, in these conditions. Excellent video, and two, strong, young pilots who worked very well together as a team.

I'm a student virtual pilot simming with the Cessna 172 Skyhawk. Do you think its good practice to start with a basic aircraft with steam gauges as shown in this video, rather than go for a one with a G1000?

Outstanding Video. I have about 300 hrs and want to start my Instrument but I got to tell you my heart was pounding just watching you. Your instructor is really good. You read all the stories about disorientation but you proved that in this video that even a really good VFR pilot that knows his plane and his abilities can easily get into trouble very quickly. Nervous to start my training but know it will make me safer in the air. Take care. Looking forward to more of you IFR training.

This is very familiar territory. I spent a lot of time in C-172s, although my instrument training was in a Piper Arrow. I love that the pilot used the checklist and followed procedure in activating his IFR plan. I also love that the CFII reminded him to ignore what his body told him! I once flew in heavy fog and my internal gyros told me I was leaning left --- but my airplane said I was straight and level . Imagine which one one I believed.

One of your most interesting vids! I was fascinated by your comments about how your body was telling you one thing but the instruments were telling you something else....If you watch any of those air disaster TV shows, that problem has been the cause of a number of accidents with commercial planes---despite all the instruments and pilot training. It must be seriously weird when you just KNOW something but the instruments KNOW something else---and you have to ignore your basic instincts. Looking forward to the next installments, Josh!

Flying in actual imc like this is so much different than doing 'hood' training with a view-limiting device. When flying on hood you'll always have slivers of your peripheral vision that can see out the window, and your body will automatically orient itself to know which way is up. I did my first bit of real imc in the past few months and I didn't expect to get disoriented but I did. It's a crazy feeling to see the instruments all looking great but feel like the airplane is slipping one way or another.

I've been carefully considering how to make IFR (training) videos... Curious to see how the comment thread plays out for this one. It is so tough to address the context thoroughly enough; You have to be very careful that you don't edit something out that inadvertently leaves your instructor vulnerable ... Good first attempt though. And is that your first Voice Over in a video Josh? I haven't noticed you do that before.

Yeah man, I know what you mean! Just like any other type of flying, the critics will never be satisfied. Although this video seemed to work out well, everyone is enjoying it. If you need some help with cutting together IFR videos, let me know! Voice-overs have been a common thing for me with other film projects other than KZread, but for IFR flight, voice-overs are almost NEEDED to accompany the complicated flight and procedures. Helps walk the viewer through what is happening, plus cover contextual gaps like you mentioned.

Nice job Josh, I think you're really going to enjoy IFR flying. I much prefer flying IFR on cross country flights over VFR (notice I didnt say IMC vs VMC) IFR is like automatic flight following and its so easy to go in and out of complicated airspace (I live in the Baltimore Washington Metro area and its just easier IFR) I love the structure of it although as a CFI (only one I) I pretty much fly around with student pilots so I need to purposefully go out and keep my IFR skills sharp. My biggest piece of advice is to make sure you dont let your instrument skills lapse after you get your rating. You'd be surprised how easy it is to go your 6months and not log 6 approaches, holding, and tracking. Often times you will find yourself in IMC, cleared for the approach, and on the descent down to initial approach altitude, you break out of the clouds. Have fun, be safe!

Just curious, why was the carb heat on during taxi? You'll likely risk FOD when operating with that on the ground. The heated air entering the carburetor is unfiltered which may damage the engine.

  • @Aviation101

We pulled carb heat when we entered IMC. Visible moisture+current outside temp would have yielded dangerous carburetor ice. Much safer to pull the carburetor heat to prevent ice than to let it build up causing us to lose RPM on the climb-out in IMC AT night. Thanks for the concern though!

Right on. Makes sense to kill two birds with one stone. Nice that he was able to help you out.

I'm not a pilot... but what would be a brief explanation of engine out procedure during an IFR flight such as this. My twisted gut tells me options would be very limited. Thanks.

Some people in the comment section need to relax. You don't want a coach that lets you make mistakes or a commanding officer that pats you on the back when you assemble your gun incorrectly. Being on edge at all times is not a bad thing, especially when you are training a new student who is in control of a one ton airborne projectile that can go 180mph...

Way to go josh going for the big jump to IFR its funny some people think glass is required for IFR do you have any upgrades in mind for 991 in the future also a annual stripdown video would be intresting if your A&P will let you do one as he inspects it

IMC means Instrument Meteorological Conditions: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instrument_meteorological_conditions VOR is a navigation system for aircrafts that enables them to know their position using short VHF radio signals. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VHF_omnidirectional_range Sorry for my english =/

As Joao said, IMC stands for Instrument Meteorological Conditions. VOR stands for VHF Omnidirectional Range, and is currently the standard IFR navigational system. VOR stations frequently operate in conjunction with DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) transceivers and TACAN (TACtical Air Navigation) stations.
