Standard Instrument Departures (SID) Obstacle Departure Procedure (ODP) Explained | IFR Departures
A departure procedure is like a preplanned playbook of how to get from takeoff and initial climb, to the enroute portion of an IFR flight. We'll look at Standard Departure Procedures (SIDs) of which there are 3 kinds (Radar, RNAV, and Hybrid), Obstacle Departure Procedures (ODPs), and some other instrument departures.

Your content is immeasurable. I'm forwarding it to every student, VFR or IFR. Simply fantastic. Thank you for your efforts.
This guy is such a g. Got me a 93 on my par and is definitely the best KZread channel for explaining everything clearly
Best KZread channel for aviation students!
I believe you are saving lives here for those willing to watch and learn. Great content. Amazing animated graphics on the government charts.
These are probably the best aviation tutorial videos on KZread. Extremely clear and helpful and very impressive!
another excellent video. thanks so much for not taking an hour to go over the info.
Yes!! I was looking forward to an instructional video on SID’s, thank you so much FlightInsight, please keep’em coming, simply because you’re the greatest instructor ever! I love you so much! Keep up the great work! Stay safe my friend!

So glad it's what you were looking for. Love to you too!
Outstanding description of SIDs. Very easy to understand. Thank you for keeping us safe!!
Your voice is calm enough to be able to list to these videos even when my wife is near.
I just discovered your terrific videos. I'm an instrument rated private pilot but I haven't flown in years due to a medical condition. I still find these videos very interesting. They are very well produced and a fantastic resource for flight training. I really got a kick out of the TRUKN TWO departure procedure for SFO, with it's TRUKN, TYDYE, GRTFL, DEDHD, HYPEE and COSMC intersections. Must be some Deadheads in the FAA charting office with a sense of humor. Very appropriate for San Francisco!😊 Keep up the good work!
This is the best instructor video on KZread. All pilot students around the world need to subscribe watch and attend your courses as well. Greetings from a current pilot student and future bush pilot in Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬🤝.
This is by far the best birthday present. I couldn't possibly thank you guys enough for this outstanding tutorial.
Nice to see a more advanced SID clip presented very well. If I may: at 6:44 you intended to view 01L, but showed 28LR and at 13:45 you ment to say 250 Ft/Nm, but said 200. Thanks for all your time and effort in this.

@@flightinsight9111 The catches are just there to give you a helpful notification for possible viewers confusion. There is a short formula to convert Ground Speed Climb Gradient to Rate of Climb: RC = GS /60 x CG (E.g: 120 / 60 x 250 = 500 '/min).

Your teaching method is amazing. Wish I was taught all of this during my instrument rating. Now 10 years later and getting back into flying and your content is wonderful. Thank you.
This video was terrific and I learned more about SIDs in it than I have through my whole instrument training!
This video was incredibly well done. Extremely thorough. So glad I found your channel! Thank you!
Your videos are above and beyond anything else I've seen on youtube and elsewhere on the web. It is clear as day the amount of effort and preparation you put into these videos. Subscribed!
The best IFR vid's I have ever seen. Thanks a lot!!!
I love this video I've never seen anything like this on KZread this thorough I learned a lot thank you. Now this makes me want to go fly departures on MSFS
Your videos are fantastic. I bought the IFR videos when I was doing my instrument training. You have a gift for teaching!
Wonderful channel with the best videos I’ve seen on these topics! And I’ve been flying for years. Thx and keep up the good work!

High praise from a long time pilot. Thank you!
Im currently studying for my IR written, this material Is literally gold dust, thank you so much!!
Amazing. I don't know how better could be explained. There's no way. Grate job. I'm sharing this with students. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
That TRUKN2 departure: DEDHD? GRTFL? Classic!
Best explanation ever, simple and easily understandable. Thank you very much.
Oh my God! Your training content and style is sooo far ahead of everything else out there it is - in a way - sad. There is just no comparison. Every time I watch a video I learn so much that I thought I already knew. The are just two things I don't like about it: 1) I want more, I am getting addicted... you just have to have more videos about everything IFR. 2) I just want to give you more money. How do I make sure I keep you going and happy? This is the measure of success folks! When you cause people to just want to give their money away to you... So good. And... so bad: I just signed up for your IFR online ground course - I am about to take my checkride in a few weeks, I want to ace it and, like I said, I just want to give you money! ;o)
Seriously....your instruction is the best out there!! Thank you!!!
Wow! I just discovered this channel. Needless to say, I subscribed right away! This training is gold! Thank you for the superb videos!
You took what I thought as incredibly difficult to understand and broke it down soo simply and magnificently. Cant wait to try to implement it in the stimulator
I just found your Channel and I could cry of happiness! Now, I will munch through your videos and I will be VATSIM-ready in no time. And I set high standards for myself. Everything I have seen yet has been excellently explained! Thanks!
AMAZING! Im so thankful I clicked this video. This helped me understand how to read fir plates so much. Thank you!
This is SUPER helpful. I'm learning SIDs for VATSIM, and while I've found some good information, this is the first time I've seen anyone explain HOW to fly these charts. So thank you. Things are making a lot more sense right now. Also, I LOVE seeing all the Grateful Dead references outside of KSFO. 😎
I passed my IFR check ride today thanks in part to you. Definitely going to check if your ground school has a commercial section!

Love the channel ❤️
I fly out of a Delta that has named VFR departure procedures you have to follow, I feel extra ready going into instrument now 😅
another great video. many thanks.
Great video
Thanks for your upload!
Wow.great video
Enjoying the videos while I work towards my instrument rating! I was thinking about a series of videos that really helped me for my PPL from another channel called The ACS Library who runs through the ACS on things that comes up during the oral and checkride. It’d be really cool if you had a series like that for Instrument that covers the ACS procedure testing. Just a suggestion. Keep up the awesome videos!

great video , I really like the method you are using just one suggestion if you could make a 30 sec recap or a summary for the lesson you have in the video the information will be retained for longer, I really apricate what you do so keep it up
Nice videos, I like your cadence.

I wish you can make another tutorial video about weather charts for IFR and VFR , kind of general video includes all weather charts how and when to use them , there is no content on KZread like this , please consider that .
I love your videos! I am so confused with instrument and the videos have really helped clear up some of the confusion. I am wondering - I am trying to find a Faa resource discussing the types of SIDS talked about and am having a hard time… are these three types derived from plates or is there something I am missing?
nice
The new San Francisco area waypoints will be Tennt, Drugg, Puup, and Syrng

I actually only ever flew out of HPN a couple times. Too big and busy for a country pilot but it's a great way to see NYC.
Gosh, I just found this channel, it’s fantastic. I have the sportys IFR course and I like your videos much better. It’s easier to stay focused maybe because of your phrasing and pauses. Sportys talks really fast and it’s easy to fall asleep… not yours!
Interesting to see how different FAA rules compared to EASA. I am 5 hours from my IR rating and haven't heard 80% of this :D We only have SIDs and STARs. :D
@lonelysail906
Жыл бұрын
60% of EASA IR course is just water(unnesserey information) which pilots will never use in the future, especially ATP course.
Hello, if you have the Garmin set up are pilots still using a full Foreflight subscription? Is it really worth it since it seems like the Garmin does it all as well.
Here’s my question about SIDs, so these need to be pulled for the database as a full procedure or can we build them from individual waypoints on the database?
Can you do this same video but using Fresno Yosemite Airport (KFAT) I would really appreciate it.
i hate to ask but i've always been confused by whether or not i need to delete the destination airport after i've entered the departure or approach. i feel like i was taught to do this at some point, so the airplane knows that it doesn't go to the destination airport first, but maybe the procedure is to just activate the departure in the run-up? would be grateful for clarification.
❤❤❤
Nice video's, and in the Clearance instructions it says you are cleared to "KASE", but you only write ASE. Is there some kind of unwritten rule that you only put down the last 3 since you know where you are going, or was that a mistake?
@scottwilson8105
2 жыл бұрын
Most airports on the mainland USA starts with a K. Controllers often speak very fast when reading out your clearance so you'll probably not be able to write everything and keep up. Dropping the "K" saves the time of writing it. I live in Hawaii so all airports start with a P, not K, and I never write the P down either, for what that's worth. When I'm about to copy a clearance I'll write down everything I already know in advance. If ATC gives me something I don't expect, I'll line through what I previously wrote and copy down what they say, but if I'm given what I expected, I just saved a bit of time by having it already written. If it's a route you're familiar with, you can really shorten it up. For example, I live on the Big Island, Hawaii and I frequently fly from Hilo (PHTO) to Honolulu (PHNL) and back. My clearance from Hilo to Honolulu will usually be "Cleared to the Honolulu Airport via Victor twenty-two, OKALA, Victor sixteen, UPOLU, Victor twenty-three, Victor seven, Lanai, Julle Five arrival, climb and maintain one zero thousand, expect one-four thousand in ten minutes, departure frequency one-one-nine-point-seven, squawk two-two-three-six." I can't write as fast as some people and I know this route well so my notes I scribble down will look like this: C HNL R V22 O 16 U 23 7 L J5 A 10 ^ 14 / 10 F 19.7 T 2236 I'll read back, "Cleared Honolulu, Victor 22, Okala, Victor 16 Upolu, Victor 23, Victor 7, Lanai, Julle 5, 1-0 thousand, 1-4 in 10, 19.7, 2236 on the squawk." As long as you can figure out your own shorthand, it doesn't matter how you write it.
Did no one notice when on the RNAV SID (6:40) said "let's do the 1R Departure with SYRAH transition" but the airplane flew the 28L/R departure?
I have a question, what if my airport has no SID? What's the procedure to take off then?
how do you know your ground speed on climb out
