Just bought a 1940’s era set of York weights and a 6 foot bar, I love lifting it, so much more dense than Olympic style weights.

It’s amazing what a difference the shorter bars make!

Great story, I've been looking for a 6 ft York power bar. So far, I've found a 5 ft York Aristocrat bar and a 6 ft York Aristocrat bar. The 6 foot bar has a sleeve like the 5 ft bar, but the sleeve is knurled and a larger diameter then the 5 ft bar. Guy I bought the 6 ft bar from said he bought in the early 90s while in highschool.

Well, I'm jealous of your York 100lb standard plates. I do have 2 x 100 that I bought from Iron Man mag back in the 70s. They are pancake type with 100 stamped on them. When I bought those plates I also bought a 7' and a 6' standard bar. I've always used the 7' for deadlifts. Never used an Oly bar for DLs. I'm not going to dig out my old Iron Man mags right now but, as I recall, they're heat treated not cold rolled and rated at 115k psi. Any idea what the York bar is rated at? I do have a couple York 75s and a couple generic ones that are flat with no markings. I wouldn't call them pancake because the edges are flat (like Oly plates) not rounded. I also have 4x40s like that. No idea who made these things. Thanks for the vid. Glad to see others love the old iron as much as I do.

I have the same York 50s and 25s- got them to use when gyms were closed during the lockdown. I didn’t have as much luck finding a quality standard barbell though. But I guess I now have some weightlifting history. Any idea how old those plates are?

The standards with the narrow lettering are newer than the wide lettering. 1970s and up.

What is the name of those four collars and do they sell them individually I need some for my barbell

The collars are usually called "heavy duty" collars in York catalogues and advertisements. I don't bekieve York sells them anymore. I'd suggest looking on your local used market.

What do you think the bars tensile strength is rated at remember an old article in MD magazine about Dave Shaw a training partner of AAU Mr America Dave Johns who was a champion powerlifter stating he like to use standard weights in training saying the bar did not flex and spring like Olympic weight sets he felt they helped develop more raw power and when using an Olympic style bar the weights seemed lighter in contests , maybe they used a bar such as this .

That's very interesting! I've used a 7' standard bar, and at least the one I used had very little whip when deadlifting. When I've used a shorter standard bar, things get really tough! As for tensile strength, I don't know. York advertised it as being rated up to 600 pounds, but I've had many reputable people state that the steel bar could take more.

@@vintageweightspgh I have an old Weider bar that seems to be able to take a large amount of weight. It's only 5 ft though. It's such a shame, that most standard bars only hold 2-250lbs these days

Just came across one of these and hit it with Rustoleum, the rust fell right off. Is there a reason you DON’T do that?

And with this bar, CT said he wanted an “old school” look so I didn’t want to clean it up too much.
