C. S. Lewis and Scientism with Dr. John West

Ойын-сауық

Beloved for the Chronicles of Narnia and his books of Christian apologetics, C.S. Lewis was also was a prophetic critic of the growing power of scientism in modern society, the misguided effort to apply science to areas outside its proper bounds. In this wide-ranging interview, Eric Metaxas speaks with John West about his book "The Magicians Twin: C.S. Lewis on Science, Scientism, and Society." They discuss Lewis' warnings about the dehumanizing impact of scientism on ethics, politics, faith, reason, and science itself. Issues explored include Lewis’s views on bioethics, eugenics, evolution, intelligent design, and what he called “scientocracy.”

Great interview and timely. I had the privilege of sitting in a couple of Dr. Behe’s lectures at my university in PA and another in NJ. He had a huge impact on my scientifically minded husband who profusely took notes. He realized that he didn’t have to separate his intellect from his faith. This was 18yrs ago! 😊

It’s a blessing that Dr. John endured the abuse at the hands of bullies as a young man to become a person who loves so many people by blessing them with his intellect.

very nice to hear that the man, on top of an interesting talk, also saw through COVID lies. we can't be reminded enough of that fiasco.

48:58 The point is missed that ‘facts and logic’ are accessible to both scientists and CS Lewis. What is not accessible to scientists but enabled Lewis to ‘predict’ (or rather to prophecy) our sad modern conditions is the Holy Spirit, who teach all truths, and not mere inferences from observed facts : ”When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.“ John‬ ‭16‬:‭13‬ . A Christian walks by trust in God.

That quote about science for power reminds me of a quote from famous programmer George Hotz. He created an AI driving company, got sued by Sony for jailbreaking the PS3, and a bunch of other things. He was in an interview I was watching randomly and he said, paraphrasing, that he doesn't care about any of the metaphysical or philosophical reasons for doing science. He does this so that he can gain power over nature. The guy kind of makes me nervous because you can see that he doesn't know he's a sinner so he says a lot of super villain things because he just doesn't see his own fallenness. It was a very telling interview. At bottom, the naturalist's main drive is to gain total power over nature. They want to be God.

Do you want Christians united to overthrow tyranny in America or alienate half the Christian audience based on foreign policy? I don't think it's best to openly criticize Tucker ( and half of the US Christian population) if they don't agree with what is ultimately a stance on war with Russia. You should accept that its rational for some Christians to support peace at a time when we feel our efforts must be used at home to defeat evil and ..and for various other reasons feel America is not prepared to fight, or morally compromised in the dispute. We shouldn't easily lose the irony that Russia officially supports Christianity as a state. What are the values the West supports right now? We are currently a union of atheist nations dedicated to post human ideology. I am a Christian who can support your message to the Church and also agree with another foreign policy.

Yes, balancing competing goods and even looking at the opposite; balancing the least damaging negatives is a very important aspect of making decisions. This is only achievable to those that have theory, practice and knowhow. If you draw a Venn diagram with three circles overlapping these aspect, you get a small area between the three, which I like to call wisdom. Academics have little or no practical experience. In fact they spend their entire lives trying to gain only a small amount of practical experience. (This is why communism fails in practice, where it is a very compelling theory). Whereas those that have practical experience and no theory have blinkers upon their view of vision. Of course you do not have the ability to have knowhow; (that is the ability to mend new ideas and practices) unless you have both theory and practical knowledge. This is why wisdom is so rare...sometimes only one in a million or even less. This is also an explanation why even scientists do not have wisdom. Add to this, the art of making decisions is a practiced one; those that repeatedly make accurate decisions, are more likely to be accurate, so those that have been making accurate predictions most of their lives are those to keep your eyes upon. This is also the argument to have leaders that have a proven track record and enter politics from other parts of society with the intention to contribute and not to have career politicians that can contribute almost nothing.

The decline of lobotomies is directly proportional to the rise of the mental health crisis in the United States, bring them back.

The rise of the mental health crisis has nothing to do with the decline of lobotomies, a butchering of the brain. The mental health crisis today has to do with the removal of meaning rooted in God and people are lost within a world ruled by gross materialism.

Um, that's ridiculous. Pharmaceutical "solutions" are the new lobotomy and are in full swing. Break up the family by unmarried motherhood, divorce, fatherlessness, and then reducing humanity to an "evolved" animal without divine origins and morality, forgiveness and salvation, and you have the demise of all health, mental included.

Lewis was a profound thinker and far ahead of his time. Never doubt that writers, through literature, wrestle with the most important questions facing man. Ever today, we address the issues like "pre-crime" through offerings like en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minority_Report_(film)
